Has anyone reached the $4.00 mark in gas prices yet? In Pittsburgh we're kind of lucky in that the highest I've seen here is $3.85 a gallon. At the station I usually go to it was low at $3.75. (low?) What's the price in your area?

Freedom

I paid $3.77 per gal two days ago. I get the lowest grade; 87 octane.

The highest grade (premium or whatever they call it) have been over $4 for 2 weeks already.

Highest so far for regular was $3.68, though I guarantee it'll be over $4/gallon by this weekend... It's leveled out to about $3.64 here though, hasn't been below $3.64 in almost a week and a half now. Man I won't complain about $2/gallon prices anymore...

FUNNY how gas prices always seem to skyrocket a week or two before a major traveling holiday, though they "claim" it's coincidence...

Diesel, though, is nearly $4.50 a gallon here!!

$3.75 (and up) for "regular". I think it is disgusting.

This morning I paid about $3.98 (or around there) for regular. And premium was well over $4. It's been this way for months now. :(
This is why I need a job closer to home. *sigh*

About $3.75-3.85 in most places. I can drive across town and pay $3.72 but then I've wasted two gallons of gas:eek:

I also think this is disgusting. How can some people afford to get to work every day? It's a sad situation in this country.:(

I've seen it as high as $3.95 here, but I think we are back down to $3.85. We use our Kroger card and get $.20 off a gallon, so the highest I have paid so far is about $3.75, but still too much!!

I often wonder that myself... I have a 60 mile round-trip to and from school every day, I use 1/4 tank of gas every day... have to fill up every ~4 days and it cost me anywhere from $45 - $50 to fill up completely... that's around $100 - $110 in gas a WEEK... just for school, not even taking into account needing to run to walmart, or take the dogs to the park or visiting my parents... it's really hard :(

We reached the 4 dollar mark a long time ago. Right now, gas is 1.40 a litre for regular which works out to 5.60 a gallon. No need to convert since the US and Canadian dollar are essentially at par. It's 130 bucks to fill my truck, 80 for the van.

One station was $3.99 Friday evening with the rest of them hovering right at $3.88

a co-worker has a friend who her -her husband and her son all work about 25 min (25 miles) one way and none of them can ride together - they are spending $1000 a month in gas.
I heard Saturday it will be b/n $5-$7 by Labor Day!

It's been $4 and over for the medium and premium grades for quite a while now. I only buy the regular and the cheapest that I've seen is now $3.91. I'm sure it'll go up before Memorial Day. I fill up when I'm down to half of a tank so it won't cost me as much to fill up. I'm lucky that I don't live too far away from work and that I only need to fill up about every 2 weeks or so. I've heard that it won't be too long before gas is $8 a gallon.

We hit $4 a gallon a couple of months ago but it came down quickly. Now it's around $3.79 a gallon. I use my Giant Eagle card and, by the time I'm ready to fill up, I usually get $.80 or more off a gallon because of the $.20 per gallon discount. Sometimes I fill up nearly for free. I don't eat out often and I entertain a lot so I cook a lot and that gets me more gas perks.

What I don't understand is...Gas is gas, plain and simple. So why does it cost higher in some places and lower in others?? I know there are taxes, and CT is THE highest taxed state in the union. In my opinion, gas should cost the same no matter WHERE you get it.

I also think the Governor of CT should cut the residents here some slack on the CT gas tax as it IS high, at least for the summer so people can go out and enjoy the weather. I don't see that happening anytime soon.

*sigh*:(

Gas ISN'T gas (Thank you EPA for not coming up with a formulation that works adequately everywhere).

There are many different blends required by area. The gas you buy in LA isn't the same as the gas you buy in CT. Different additives are required, along with different oxygenation compounds, etc., depending on which EPA area you are in. Last time I looked (it's been a while, haven't really looked into it since the last gas price spike) there were 50 or so different formulations required.

A gas tax holiday sounds nice, but it's political feel good BS. The money (much like the "economic stimulus" money) is going to have to come from somewhere else to pay for the "holiday". Being that the government produces nothing, they have nothing to pass the costs on through, so BINGO.....we wind up paying higher taxes elsewhere to cover the gap left by the "holiday".

Please correct me if I'm wrong but don't also overseas they pay certain taxes with their gas, like I know in MO you get lower gas prices since we have to pay to license and title our vehicles when we buy them, but my understanding is that in other countries you don't have to pay to license and/or title your car but pay for it through gas instead?

If that isn't the case then I have no idea where I got that then lol

Oooh, or in some places they don't have to pay personal property tax but instead pay higher gas taxes to make up for it? Maybe thats what I'm thinking of. I believe that is in the US though, some states you don't have to pay personal property but pay higher gas prices.

Lady's Human
05-20-2008, 11:32 PM
The taxes on gas have nothing to do with other fees in the state. High service/high tax states have high taxes.

Im MA, for instance, you pay sales tax on the vehicle on purchase, annual excise tax to the town on the value of the vehicle, gas tax, property taxes, sales tax on the gas, and annual registration fees.

In other news related to gas prices, the idiots in Congress are going to try to sue OPEC.....

They walk among us ............ and in this case we've elected them to leadership.

Time to clean house.

We need a New Broom ... the old one isn't working so well ...

Example - My wondrous State of Ohio:

The previous power trust had an Attorney General accused of all sorts of corruption,
shady deals, favoritism ... who coasted along till the last election.

Enter the New Guy - campaigned as the Straight Shooter who was gonna "Clean House"
and be the Good Cop - root out all the *evil* in Ohio. He got elected.

"New" AG Marc Dann lasted a year anna half ... till the Word got out that HE
wasn't much better than his predecessor!
Seems ole Marc had hired a few not-so-swifties as his right handers, personally ignored
some sexual harassment situations in the ole AG's own office ...
AND 'forgot' he was married with kids.

Took a while, but we just got rid of HIM ... who's NEXT??

And we wonder why gas prices are so high!

Well, I know we have to pay the 'bollo' on the car every year by the end of January. I am pretty sure that is the same as licensing. And we had to pay some type of fee, I can't remember what it is called, when we bought the car. Also every 2 years we have to have the car put under revision to ensure it meets the EU standards for emissions (changing of all filters etc) and drivablity. We also have something called 'bollino blu' which is a tag that you have to have on your car to say it was emissions tested and is within the standard. The 'bollino blu' is different the revision though. Without a 'bollino blu' on your vehicle you cannot drive within the city. And if caught doing so you will be fined and/or the car can be impounded.

Went from $3.83 yesterday to $3.99 today!

Fortunately, I filled up on Saturday, and I paid $3.75. I am so lucky that I get good gas mileage, and I am able to plan shopping around drives to and from work. So a tank of gas for me can last for up to 3 weeks! I know I am lucky.... I don't know how many can afford to work anymore!

I have considered taking the bus. And I have also condsidered using my tax stimulus check to buy a bike to get back and forth. Unfortunately, I often have to drive to a meeting during the day for work, so many days it won't work for me to ride the bus or a bike.

It maddens me how the price can jump by 20 cents or more overnight!

$4.50 gallon in my town here - I saw $1.29 a litre in the city, which is about $4.88 a gallon.

Here in Cochrane, I get 5 cents per litre against my grocery bill. I am glad that this station has kept it at $1.19 per litre (4.50).

At least I have a Toyota, and my drive to work is mostly highway speeds - this last tank of gas I got 574 km to 40 litres. That's 356.67 miles and 10.667 gallons.

33.45 MPG...yuck...that car can do better! I had a half day of city rush hour traffic this afternoon, though...

S.E. Michigan - up to $4.15 this afternoon.

We bought a new car last week - Ford Fusion. Sticker said average for in-town is 20/mpg and 28 on the highway.

We went down to Findlay, Ohio for the Pet Talk gathering on Sunday. About 230 miles round trip. We got 35 MPH - needless to say, I am very happy. That's about 15 miles more to the gallon than with our old Explorer.

I guess we are not having it as tough as the Brits, i heard today they are paying about 3.15 a litre, and it takes a truckie to fill up his truck 160 pounds day, they had a huge protest, good on them, along with the canadians we are still having to pay more, we worked it out the US is paying around 1.25 litre and we are paying 2.09, so i guess gas is still relatively cheap in the US, but yes we are all feeling the pinch that's for sure.

Lucky I got "lost" taking back roads home from school to try to get around traffic (ended up adding an HOUR on to my trip... never again!) and passed by a gas station selling gas $0.20 cheaper so maybe getting lost wasn't completely in vain, I filled up, of course!!

$25.00 for 6 gallons of gas today. Boy is THAT depressing!!

Ugh tell me about it.... I put $25 every other day in my truck and it only gives me MAYBE two round-trips to school....... so two days of gas for me = ~$25

(mind you, $25 is a little less than 1/2 a tank for me. IDK why I never fill up completely.....)

Oh and also, most gas stations now are pre-authorizing credit and debit cards used for pay at the pump for $75 OR MORE!!!!!!! And you get charged for your purchase on top of that.... eventhough the $75 is never "charged" to your account (it's just used to see if you have an available balance before the actual transaction), it will sit pending in your account for about a WEEK!!!!! So if you have to fill up every few days like me, you can have like $225 that you can't access from your account because its "pending" ON TOP OF what you actually bought.....:mad::mad:

I really should start paying with cash, but I really don't feel comfortable with carrying around that much cash with me for how often I'm needing to fill up...

When you buy a car in CT, not only do you pay sales tax, licensing and title fees, but a car in CT is considered a "luxury", so we are also sent a tax bill every year based on how much THEY think your car is worth. That on top of the 7% gas tax, soon to be 7.5% is just too much.

Our wonderful (not) Governor has decided to hold off raising the gas tax for the summer. Believe me, it doesn't put a DENT in helping the CT residents out.

So, that's why I'm stuck home in my little apartment on my computer watching tv, reading. My car, after putting $25 worth of gas in it, is sitting in the parking lot going nowhere, doing nothing.

Something's gotta give. People can't take much more. I've been reading stories about fights at the gas pumps, cutting in lines, etc. It's getting ugly.

Something's gotta give. People can't take much more.I hear you, sister, but it's not likely to get "better" any time soon. It's going to take some real grass roots effort to get the government to move forward with tapping into the oil & shale resources that are right here on US territory. There needs to be some sanity and balance in all this, with die-hard environmentalists coming to terms with reality for the rest of us. I'd say most of us are getting tired of being held hostage by foreign oil because we're held hostage here by over regulation preventing development of available resources.

And what ever happened to the development of alternate fuels that was going to save us back in the 70's? In case no one noticed, those promises were made over 35 years ago!!!!

Here in NZ at our local supermarket they sell petrol, from time to time if you purchase over 15 dollars of produce you get 15c a litre off your petrol ,it sure helps out a lot, and we always spend that much, usually they only give you like 4cent or 6cents off a litre,so it is a good promotion at the moment, we are really hurting down under, and as you all say it is only going to get worse, funny thing is our groceries last week were the cheapest we have had in a long time, i guess we did not need that much, this week they were expensive again,it seems it is never going to end does it? :(

With gas prices in Vancouver flirting with $1.50 a litre, much of the attention has been on the 2.4 cent a litre provincial carbon tax that kicks in tomorrow. However, provincial tax cuts also coming into effect tomorrow mean your pay cheque should be bigger as well.
Victoria has promised the carbon tax will be 'revenue neutral' because it will be offset by cuts to provincial income and business taxes. Provincial income taxes drop 2% effective tomorrow, but because the cut is applied to your income for the entire year, the reduction you'll see on your pay slip will be 4%.
The BC government is playing games with us, but then that's nothing new. I have to fill up my gas tank on the way home tonight and I can only imagine how long the lineup is going to be. The Carbon Tax kicks in at midnight tonight. The above is a quote from our local news website. Oh yes, and I did receive my $100 cheque (dubbed the Climate Change Rebate Cheque) from our beloved government that is urging us to use it for things like eco friendly light bulbs, put towards the purchase of a bike or something that's "green". I wonder how many people actually used it for that purpose? Mine was put towards bills. They giveth, and they taketh away twofold.

I just moved to an area where the cost of living is much less than where I used to live, and it's around $3.49- $3.59 here. Where I moved from had some of the highest tax on everything in the country. (food, property, etc.)

Bringing this old thread back up again because the price of regular unleaded went up 14 cents between yesterday and today at the Speedway station down the block from where I work. News radio gives low gas prices once each hour - in other suburbs they're saying $2.51, $2.54 -- but at the Speedway it was $2.65 yesterday, $2.79 today! What gives, I wonder? I try to get it when I go to church - one county over and it's about a nickel a gallon less because of different taxes.

Oil, gasoline up on US crude pipeline leak
By CHRIS KAHN (AP) – 2 hours ago

NEW YORK — Retail gasoline prices increased Monday as crews continued to work on a broken Midwest pipeline that transports a quarter of the oil imported from Canada to the U.S.

In its weekly report on gasoline pump prices, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said Monday that the national average for a gallon of unleaded regular was $2.721, up about 4 cents from a week ago. The Midwest showed the biggest jump in regional prices, up 10.4 cents from a week ago to $2.778 a gallon. The average pump price in Chicago was $3.018, up almost 16 cents from a week ago.

The broken Enbridge Energy crude oil pipeline is in Romeoville, Ill., about 30 miles from Chicago. It is part of a system that transports oil from western Canada to U.S. refiners. Marathon Oil Corp., which operates a refinery in Robinson, Ill., about 225 miles south of Chicago, would not comment on whether it faced shortages because of the pipeline shutdown. On its website, Marathon says the refinery produces gasoline and diesel fuel. It has a capacity of 206,000 barrels per day.

Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service, said the pipeline helped push wholesale gas prices in the Midwest about 30 cents per gallon higher than the West Coast and 15 to 20 cents per gallon higher than the East Coast.

The jump in prices is "based mostly on perception," Kloza said, as the U.S. continues to sit on the largest supply of oil and petroleum-based fuels on record. Fuel supplies may be tighter in the Midwest as farmers harvest crops and push diesel demand higher, but refineries are still receiving oil despite the pipeline problem, he said.

"In the meantime, if you're someone who needs to buy 100,000 barrels of gasoline or diesel by the end of this month, there's probably a little bit of panic setting in," Kloza said. The price of oil and gasoline have surged on spot markets as doubts linger about when Enbridge can get the pipeline back up and running.

That's pushed gasoline and diesel prices higher, Kloza said.

According to the Oil Price Information Service, motorists in Warren, Ind., have been stung with the biggest price hikes. Pump prices there have soared 34.7 cents per gallon since Sept. 1.

Boyd, Ky., saw an increase of 34.3 cents per gallon in the same time, and Hillsdale, Mich. saw prices jump 32.4 cents per gallon.

Enbridge, based in Houston, wouldn't say when the pipeline would be operating again. An estimated 6,100 barrels of crude oil were spilled last week after the pipeline broke.

The futures contract for benchmark crude also increased Monday, rising above $77 a barrel. Prices followed the stock market higher as investors cheered reports that Chinese industrial production was accelerating. China said over the weekend that manufacturing rose 13.9 percent in August from a year ago, faster than the 13.4 percent growth pace in July.

A weaker dollar also contributed to rising oil prices by making crude cheaper for investors holding other currencies.

Benchmark crude for October delivery added 74 cents to settle at $77.19 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude rose 87 cents to settle at $79.03 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

In other Nymex trading in October contracts, heating oil rose 1.83 cents to settle at $2.1227 a gallon and gasoline added less than a penny to settle at $1.9806 a gallon. Natural gas gained 5.5 cents to settle at $3.938 per 1,000 cubic feet.

It spiked to about $3.99 here in mid Michigan yesterday. I filled up the day before at $3.89. Today I saw a few stations at $3.88. Hopefully it'll go down some more, but those rumors of it hitting $5 a gallon this summer don't seem much like rumors anymore. :(

You know... I went back to the beginning of this thread which began in 2008. Seems like there is an obvious pattern.

Gas was hovering at $4 a gallon in the US in the Spring/Summer months. Dropped down to $3.50ish during the fall/winter.... Spring/Summer of '09, thread was bumped because prices were heading toward $4 again. Repeat in '10 and now '11.

ETA: The attendant at the station this a.m. said they are expecting it to drop another 10 cents in time for the 4th weekend. The oil companies must be in cahoots with the resorts and theme parks. Actually.... When you think about what it takes to mine, transport, refine, transport again and then deliver a gallon of gasoline... We have it pretty good in the US.

I mean, you pay more for a gallon of milk most places now.

Also, when the scale of this is considered, there are a lot of companies that make way bigger profit margins. (Google anyone?) I WANT oil companies making good profits. Anybody with a private reitement plan almost certainly has some of their money invested in them.

ALL of this said... It could be made more inexpesive at the point of delivery. But THAT is a discussion more suited for the DH. LOL
