View Full Version : New Server - Some Changes

Karen

This is the NEW Server for Pet Talk. We have also upgraded vBulletin - the software that runs Pet Talk - to the newest version from last week. They did come out with an even newer version this week, but we will wait before installing that one, until others have tested it and the bugs are worked out.

If you saw a message saying "Please go to test.petoftheday.com/talk," that is temporary, until the whole Internet is updated as to where to find Pet Talk now that it is in a new place. That is something that will happen automatically, so don't worry if you DIDN'T see that message. That just means the change has been propagated to your corner of the Web.

We are just looking at the vBulletin software right now, and seeing what the new options are, and how things look, so don't be surprised if things still change a bit while we explore.

Let us know if you experience any problems, and what you think. We hope it will be faster and better!

"Today's posts" button is gone again. :( After you get some much needed rest, could you try to get it back?

Now I gotta go try to see how "multi-quote" button works. ;)

I was afraid to log on today for fear I would get the dreaded "Pet Talk is under construction" or some such wording. Paul that was super quick! I hope you were able to get at least some sleep. It looks like there are new things to explore here. What fun! :)
P.S. Love those little hearts! :)

I find it's easier to compose and post replies. I had been blaming it on Firefox, but everything is simpler now. Thank you! :)

(I couldn't find the http://67.19.42.180/talki/PetTalk_heart.gif (http://petoftheday.com/talk/../) until I dragged it down from header!)
Interesting! Double click on this heart and up comes Pet of the Day! :)

Hey, great work Paul & Karen.:)

I noticed a new feature (multi quote icon). How does this work exactly?

When you want to reply to more than one person's post at a time, you click that little "multiquote" icon in each of the posts. It will turn orange and have a minus sign, so if you click it again, it will "deselect" that post. Then, when you are ready to reply to all of them, hit the "reply" button as you normally would, and all the posts will appear, quoted, in your reply box.

This works so fast that I have a whip lash!!;)

Paul, thank you!!

Oooh, hope you have one of those funny collars handy!

Just kidding. But as you can see, I click the "multiquote" icon in lizbud's post, and gini's post, and now can reply to them both in one step!

Hee Hee - what folks are using is the little heart graphic from the top, that is up in the header between the featured pets.

It's a DRS (Dirty Rotten Shame) the i-net wizards ever allowed the "underscore"
to be used as a valid addressing character.

What was wrong with a plain, simple, BLANK space?

:p

Karen

A "plain, simple, blank space" means something else in machine code, so cannot be used in URLs.

LOLOLOL,

You have a 'bug' in the program...

I was editing a post and there is a midge or a gnat that starts to do donuts on the screen near the SAVE button...:D

It happened twice and it disappeared before I could kill it.

Kidding!:D

Hee hee - you know, don't you Richard, that there was an actual bug - a fly - that brought down an early computer, hence the name given all kinds of computer malfunctions?

And hey, folks - Today's Posts is back! Paul fixed it!

Great job with the server swap and update. Since switching I find it is much faster as well. Good Job.

I do have a question though. I had a request from someone for a new signature and avatar. The avatar was animated and within limits but everytime she tries to load it she gets a message saying 'You may not be allowed to use animated images.' I tried changing mine to see if I got the same thing and did. So basically I wanted to know if animated avatars are now disallowed or if that is something that changed in the new version or what.

Thanks
Michelle

I emailed her, but haven't gotten a response, as she sent the same question to me. What kind of file is it? Paul will look into it.

kittycats_delight

it's a .gif file. Same as I use for all the animated avatars.

That's Karen and Paul for checking it out. :)

http://http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/v1/

This is what I tried to do and when I click on the link it says it's an error. I just clicked on the insert link option and then copied and pasted the url to the link into the box and then pressed ok.

I just clicked on the insert link option and
then copied and pasted the url to the link into the box
and then pressed ok.

Your link has an extra http:// at the front end >>>

http://http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/v1/ (http://http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/v1/)

The "box" that opens up on Pet Talk already HAS a http:// filled in and highlighted ...

You need to "delete" that http:// and THEN "Paste" in your address;
then hit OK.

This one will work: http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/v1/

With this new version, I've noticed a big change in Search. I go to Advanced Search and start to type in a name such as C for Cinder & Smoke. Previously, as soon as I type the C, all the names I have previously searched for show up and I pick the one I want. Easy.
Now, I find I need to type more letters, Cin - then there is a very long list Cin words that I have never searched for and have no interest in. Some aren't even User Names. Is there a way, maybe under user options, to go back to the previous way? Thanks.

Karen
05-05-2008, 08:54 AM
No, the new server doesn't have the cache of words you used to search for, but in time, it will get used to terms you frequently use.

I just realized now, when private messaging and it tells me I have to wait 60 seconds to send another message, it tells me how many more seconds I have to wait! :D

Karen
05-06-2008, 09:48 PM
We have now changed that, and a couple other things.

Now the time between sending Private Messages will be 30 seconds, and we have increased the number of Private Messages you can have at one time to 500. Mind you, you still need to empty out old messages from time to time ...

We also changed the number of people you can PM at once to 12 recipients, which used to be 5.

Found it, and got it working! Who-hoo!
