I love my life! It seems like everything bad that can happen happens to me. Just my luck I guess. So this morning I wake up around 7. I look outside and there's snow all over the ground. Awesome! I was super excited because I love snow, and the last time it snowed Kai had the flu so we couldn't exactly go out and play. Dylan of course, wanted to go outside right away. So I got up, jumped in the shower, got the kids ready and we headed down to the local park. I put Kai in his little snow outfit and we all had a blast playing in it. It's pretty much all melted now though. Can you believe it? It's almost May! :p Everyone here knew it was to snow though. It did yesterday too. Luckily, it didn't snow during Dylan's soccer game yesterday or rain, so we got pretty lucky. Anywho, the day started out great, but shortly after I got home the day turned pretty slimey.

I had just got done doing all the dishes and had just given Kai a bath. He wasn't even dried off yet, when I heard a weird noise and smelt burning. So ya, my water heater decided it was going to catch on fire. There were flames (albeit small) shooting out of it so I took Kai and Dylan and ran into the bedroom and then came back out to look at it. I called my roomate what seems like ten million times but he wouldn't answer. So I called my bf who was just down the street at work. By this time I was crying because there was smoke everywhere, and I tend to freak in situations that have to do with fire. I hate fire. It is one of my worst fears. So I called him and he came down right away. In the meantime I had already called 911 and the firemen got to the apartment shortly after. I'm not sure what made it catch on fire, but if I wouldn't have been home we would have been in some serious trouble. The water heater is surrounded by very old wooded cabinets. Not good.

So they put the fire out and brought a huge fan in to blow out all the smoke. Our smoke detectors didn't even go off!!! We could have been sleeping and not known the house was on fire. Luckily I was here and I came back from the park when I did. The firemen were very nice and gave Dylan some stickers and I took some pictures of them...I photograph everything. I just can't believe this happened. In a way I find it a little funny, because the weirdest and strangest thing always tend to happen to me! It sucks.

I was relieved to find out there is no charge to call the fire department as it is covered by taxes. I was expected a hefty bill. I was so happy when they said it was all for free. :D So anyway, we won't have hot water again until tomorrow. They will be getting us a new one, as well as new smoke detectors and replacing the burnt wood in the kitchen. Luckily, it wasn't a huge mess. I can only imagine how lucky I am. To think of people losing their homes everyday. :( I was scared with just this little incident. I can't imagine how scared people are in huge fires. But we are all ok. We inhaled a little smoke but they said not to worry about it because we got out so very quickly. I was on it!

At least a was able to relax a little this morning and enjoy some snow with the boys. :) Oh yes, and the fan was very very loud! Kai though didn't mind it, as he fell asleep in the car with it making noise right next to him. I have no idea how he slept through it.

Here Kai is tackling me while Dylan gets ready to cover me in ice. Silly boys! It's so funny watching them together now that Kai is a little older. He wants to constantly play with his big brother and bounce with him on the couch and bed, wrestling. Total boys!

I'm so glad everything is ok and none of your were hurt! I know it's hard to think in a situation like that but in the future PLEASE call 911 FIRST ... before a BF or roommate! :) Also, it would be best to go outside (even in the cold) than to possibly trap yourselves in a bedroom. Even if the flames didn't reach you, the smoke can be deadly! Just a concerned "mom" talking here! ;)

All the snow pictures are precious! I'm glad you all had such a fun time!

Consider that seconded!

I was wondering why there are no battery operated smokes in the apartment? here, apartments have to have both hard wired (connected to the electrical system) and battery operated. Usually ONE SET will function! The landlords come through once or twice a year to replace the batteries in those; and the electrical ones have to be tested yearly.

We're required by the Building Code to have battery smoke detectors in at least two rooms of our small apartments. I have three and change the batteries when we change our clocks.

We have two smoke detectors. Both run on batteries. They are both still running, as the light is still blinking, so I'm not sure why they didn't go off. I'm going to see if the landlord can put in new ones. It just doesn't make sense that they didn't go off...

I had to take Kai in the room while I went out into the living room as he was naked (having just got out of the bath) so I couldn't take him outside right away. I had to make sure he was dressed. We got out pretty fast though. Whenever I'm in an emergency I never call 911 first. I don't know why...I just immediately think of family or roomate or significant other to call. I really need to get my head straight! Lets just say it's one of the stupider things I do. I think it has to do with the fact that I should try to fix it myself before I let others fix it for me. It comes from my mother. Luckily here, even if the house was ablaze we couldn't get stuck. There are just too many ways to get out. Once I move into a bigger place (I feel like I live in a closet) I'll be making a disaster plan, in case of fire or anything else.

As far as the weather goes, I'm pretty sure it will snow again tonight. It's been hailing all day today and the clouds look black. I'm not used to it being this dark this early, but the clouds are blocking the sun. So, maybe we'll have snow again tomorrow. :)

I really hope the maintenance person comes tomorrow at 9, because I'm craving a nice hot bath!

That's a great idea!!! How often do you change them?

when we change our clocks.

How often do you change them?

Twice a year - when the clock moves ahead one hour in the spring, and back one hour in the fall. :)

LOL! Donna you crack me up! :D He was a good looking man though let me tell you! It was so funny. I had called my friend while they were there and the first thing out of her mouth was, "Are they hot?". So silly. :p

It's amazing how fast my boys are growing. Kai is going to be a year on the 20th of May. :( I was scrapping an old photo of Dylan at the beach when he was about a year and a half old and I couldn't help but feel sad. I miss those times so much. Being able to just sit there and hold him while he slept. Now, he's too big to be held, but we do cuddle. Luckily for me he's a cuddly kid, so I can still sneak in some lovin. I just can't believe it.

Ok, from now on, on the first Sunday of every month, TEST your smoke alarm! Make sure you do this EVERY month! It only takes a minute and it could save your life and the lives of your children.

Buy a ABC fire extinguisher for your kitchen and place it IN SIGHT, in a easy location to grab quickly and learn how to use it. I have always had one in my kitchen. Learn all you can about fire extinguishers, the types and what to use them for. The ABC one will handle all fires. Use the wrong one and you can do more harm than good. Use it wrong and you could spread the fire and it is useless.

If you are unsure, contact your local fire department and see if they hold classes that you can go to to learn about the types and how to use them. With children in the house, this is something you need to know.

After using one to put a fire out, remember this.. NEVER turn your back on it, it may not be out. Back away from it and watch it.

Fire extinguishers can be found in Wal Mart and they are not expensive.

We have a fire extinguisher. :) I've used one once before, but it would be good to find out exactly what kind it is.
