As I was driving home in the wee hours of this morning, I saw a dog running down the side of the road. My very drunk husband was highly amused as I ranted about how it was four in the morning and I wanted to crawl into bed, but I am physically incapable of driving past a wandering dog.

So I pulled over and as I did, the "dog" stood to his full height, turned his head and stared at me with bright yellow eyes. That's no dog. It was a massive, magnificent solid black wolf. He moved with remarkable grace on legs twice as long as my longest legged dog! Full of confidence and fearless. It was stunning to watch him.

There is a wolf pack that lives within the City of Whitehorse limits and many wolves in the territory. I see their tracks all the time and have occasionally thought I saw one running in the bush, but I have never been gifted with the opportuntity to just watch one in it's territory, doing what wolves do. Totally made up for having to drive drunks around all night! I'm still a little awed.

In a slightly ironic twist, yesterday was four years to the day since a wolf came into my yard and tried to eat Hobo!

OK ... just WHAT were you guys up to?

Were you the Sober & Designated Driver for the Wolf Tour ...
or just the least-sloshed of those available?

Where was one of your many cameras??

;)

Yukon February Night

Weary drive
Late at night
Early morning more like it
Snow-covered ground and trees
Thinking only of home
And bed
And resting my bone-tired self
Blurrily drunk passenger beside me.
I drive wearily on
When a movement catches the corner of my eye
My brain cries Halt
Suddenly alert, adrenaline flows
As the movement stops and a
Gold-eyed midnight silhouette
Stares me down in wild magnificence
Wolf! my heart cries, and leaps within me
The wonder burns his eyes into my memory forever
As I drive home
Awake now
And awash in awe.

Tamara, what an experience. See, there was a reason you were out and about at that hour (above and beyond driving the drunk hubby home). Hold those images so they get sealed in your mind and your heart.

Karen, what a lovely descriptive poem to commemorate the sight!

Great poem, Karen! You are very talented!

It's our annual winter festival week. Gotta go out at least once for Rendezvous (http://www.yukonrendezvous.com/)
Plus one of my dearest friends in the world was in town for a few days. I was stone cold sober. I dont' drive if I've had anything to drink. The 60 dollar cab fare is cheap compared to what could happen!

Wow, what an experience. I've recently taken photos with a captive wolf but I can't imagine being so close to such a wild creature. It must have been amazing. :D You are so lucky to have seen such a magnificent animal.
