I'm finally making my own money. Yesterday, my mom sent me this online job application for XXX They have tons of areas to go into but at 15 years old I'm pretty limited. I was hesitant at first to apply but I really wanted a job so I can make my own money and spend it on WHATEVER I WANT. So I filled it out and today my parents took me to a job fair at the XXX. There were tables on all the areas you could apply for. Since I'm limited, I chose XXX. I could have chosen food service or admission but I chose XXX I took a basic math test, like addition and subtraction of change and stuff. I got 100% on that I think and then I went in for the interview. I was really nervous and I said one really stupid thing but the guy hired me on the spot. So now I have a job. :D

I plan on working my way up to working in the XXX. When I am 18 I am going to apply for an internship there. I am in the FFA at school so hopefully that boosts my chances tremendously.

Just had to share. :) I am excited. I get minimum wage but that's okay. It's still money, right? :p

How exciting! I envy the choices that young people have today. My first job at age 16 was as a sales clerk at Gimbel's dept. store and I made a whopping $1.25 an hour, $.10 more than minimum wage at that time. You're gonna have lots of fun and make money at it. Cool!

Congrats! It can suck at times, but it's money, right?!

Anyway, I freaked for a second because I thought you were over by me because I pass Six Flags every time I go up to my barn, but then I remembered there are a couple of Six Flags around the country.

I love Great Adventure! Have fun! My first job was babysitting for 50c an hour-but I made enough money to buy my own record albums (you know what they are? :D ) and teen magazines! It made me feel really good! How great if you could work at the Safari Park! That's where I'd want to be! Congratulations!

Well Done, i hope you enjoy your new job and of course the money that come's with it, it is a good stepping stone, you learn work ethics, team work,it just give's you a real idea what it is like in the real world, also you will learn money management too, many other skills, great that you already know what you want to do and are making plans towards it, you remind me of my 15yr old, who also just got her first job, apart from her paper round, she is enjoying it too and the extra money as well, like you she also has her whole life planned out. :) what is the minimum wage likely to be, melissa is getting 11 dollars an hour, which i think is very good money for her age,not sure if that is the minimum here or not.

Ginger's Mom

$11.00!!! The New Zealand dollar must be in even worse shape than the American dollar. The minimum wage in NJ is $7.15. No one without a valid driver's license is going to get an entry level job for $11.00 an hour. At least not in New Jersey.

According to the internet, the minimum wage here for a 16yr old is 12 dollars an hour, this has just risen this year, melissa is only 15 so i guess 11 is pretty good all round. :)

Sounds like a good first job. My only tip - wear good, comfortable shoes, or your feet will scream at you!

Catty1
03-22-2008, 05:10 PM
Congrats, sounds great!

I agree with Karen about the shoes...I would add to take TWO comfy pairs with you the first few days, as changing your shoes halfway through the day can make a real difference as your feet 'fit' differently. :)

(Take a few bandaids too...in case you get a wee blister on your heel. Just in case.)

Way to go! :D

I'm a real people person so your job would fit me perfectll! Have tons of fun! it's great experience for you (esp. dealing with the public) and it makes you strong and wise. Is there another area you can switch to?

And don't sweat it about the Sunday schedule. If they are dumb enough to forget you can't work on a Sunday, ignore it! Not your problem.

(Maybe keep an eye out for another job closer to home?)

Candace did you REALLY just tell her to not show up to work on days she's scheduled and to ignore it? sure do that Alyssa you won't have to worry about quitting - they'll FIRE YOU FIRST!!
go to them daily if you have to and tell them you can't work on Sundays.

Working at a job that you hate is the pits, especially when you were so excited about it. If this woman continues to yell at you, let 'er yell. If she is downright abusive, that's another story but sometimes people are just mouth-o-matics and it's directed at other people but it's really that they're yelling at themselves. In the grand scheme of things, she's but a blip on the radar screen. She probably hates her job even more than you hate yours except that you're in the catbird seat because you won't be doing this forever. She probably will be. Flick her off your shoulder like the little gnat that she is and say "NEXT!". (To yourself, of course. ;) )

Okay, I just got back from work and I must admit I actually like my job now since I worked in a different area today. I didn't have to see the lady that always yells at me. That makes it much better then it was previously. I never hated the working part of my job, just the fact that they didn't take me off Sundays and the fact that I always worried about getting yelled at. My friend said she has had problems with her in the past so, as long as I don't see her I think I'll be okay. I enjoy helping people and making them happy, it's just getting yelled at that pisses me off. I am going to see if I can request working in the area I did today so I don't have to see her again. :D

I know I sound really two-faced, but it I think I over-reacted last night when I said I HATE my job. It was just two things I hated, not really the job overall. I don't know why I said that. I also took care of the Sundays off thing, so hopefully it's all good. :)

Believe me, when you have to work with someone you don't like, it makes the job really intolerable. I was so excited to move to teach in middle school, and to have an assistant to work with, and now in my 3rd year there, I can't wait to get out. When you work with someone who does whatever they can to make you miserable, or to undermine you, it just makes work really unpleasant.

I really hope you can stay in the new area and avoid the other area. Nothing is worse than getting up and hating the thought of having to work with certain people all day. It's depressing as all get out.

CONGRATS ON THE JOB ALYSSA!!! Sorry I'm just seeing this. I hope you continue to be away from that lady and everything continues to go well. I know you'll do great in any job.

One of my first jobs was with a boss that was a tyrant. He was so mean to me I wanted to cry all the time. I pushed through it and put up with him. It was a character building experience to say the least. It's where I learned patience. Years later, I looked back and admired myself so much for getting through it. I also realized I learned more from him that I could ever have learned in school. He taught me accounting, taxes, and many other things. He was a great man. Very hard to tolerate but a super smart fella.

It really is hard to work with someone that you dread working with. If you have to work with her again, I hope things go better. :) Good luck and best wishes!!

Glad everything is going alright. I also applied at the Six Flags by me but I'm not going to work there because they are really strict about appearance.
Also glad you like working, I seem to be allergic to actual work. :p That's why I work at a barn and a museum. (I'm actually at work right now)

Hang on in there sweetie, I am sure you did not over react, when you said you hated your'e job you probably did at that very moment, glad you have found another area to work in that suits you better, and you should not have to put up with being yelled at,can you say something to someone about it? i have not read all the posts so forgive me if you have already mentioned that, anyhow good luck. :)

I decided to give you guys another update. ^^

The girl that always yelled at me is actually nicer then I originally thought. She's nicer now, because I guess I've gotten the hang of handling the money now. :p I still like XXX better then XXX now. I've actually been stocking the games more then actually working though, which isn't so bad. That way I can't get in trouble for screwing up the money ;) Anyway, yesterday I actually hurt myself at work but I didn't report it because the supervisors flip out over us getting hurt. They want us going to first aid for even the slightest cuts so they don't get infected so I do understand but my friend said she spent around a half hour there. I burned my elbow on one of the motors in the back of the game. It didn't hurt THAT bad but it hurts everytime I hit my elbow on something. I blame no one but myself though, I'm not exactly a genius. :p

XXX

ETA: I quit this department and am in a much better department then I was last year. I can't believe I ever worked in games.

Congratulations on how things have worked out. I thinked what you have learned from this experience will serve you well long after the earned $$ have been spent. Things can change or eventually work out for the better when given half a chance. Oh yeah, and I got an "oral warning" for being under in my till. The guy said it generally isn't a big deal and all my friends have gotten them but it's just annoying. I still like my job but sometimes I don't..like today I got told not to look at my cellphone in front of guests. I wasn't in front of guests, and I'm sorry for looking at the time.

Well, just wanted to say I OFFICIALLY WORKED ALL SUMMER! :D I am DONE-FINISHED. I wish I could say that, but the season is not over yet. Still have 3 months of working on Saturday :p I've met alot of friends, and I mean ALOT (basically my entire department) so, I am fine with it and I'll survive but I am so sick of six flags, let's just say it's gotten to the point where I don't even like going as a guest anymore. Today was my last day of work for the summer, I start school next Thursday, so it's back to weekends. I must say though, I'd choose work over school any day, at least I get paid and have SOME sort of fun. ;)

This has been an overall great summer, probably my best summer yet, and I think I've matured alot(in some ways).

Okay, I'll stop now.

ETA- I know, I never stop talking but I forgot to add 1 thing

Also, I'm probably going to work at SF next season too, because I like it, but I'm tired of the games department. I might switch to Entertainment, Attractions, or I COULD do games again, but I probably end up doing entertainment so I have my foot in the door for working with the tigers, or at least getting an internship, hehe but that's a whole other story ;)

Well Done!
I always preferred work to school but I was lucky to have great jobs with great people. Maybe if I got paid to go to school, I'd have liked it better. I guess I should say that...bad influence to the younger PT members. I am half joking though.

Well, just wanted to say I might be done with Six Flags for awhile. I feel like I was treated like crap on Saturday. It's like they forgot how hard I worked for them ALL summer.

So, I wanted to go to Six flags for the fun of it. I went to fright fest saturday night. So I got to guest relations, hand the lady my I.D., and she says "Sorry, I can't let you in. Your I.D. is no longer valid because you haven't worked in two weeks. We can talk to your supervisor, sorry." To me she had a nasty tone. THEN she takes my I.d. which I needed to hand in with my uniform, even though that was taken care of and all and I didn't get into trouble for it. I was so frustrated at that point trying to think of how to get into the park. My friends had driven me there and my parents weren't home or anything so I had no way of getting home. So, I went up to the counter and demanded to talk to my supervisor. I had went up to a different counter, and the guy simply gave me a ticket to get in. I guess he didn't want to be bothered.

Sure, I got in afterall, but it just made me really upset. I worked hard all summer and JUST because I hadn't worked in two weeks I "was no longer employed". ARE you kidding me? So apparently I was laid off without knowing? It's not MY fault they took me off the schedule at 10 PM two weeks ago seriously. It's not my fault they didn't put me on the schedule. Wow, get the hell over it. If my friend Kelly doesn't work there next year, I'm not either. I work for them all summer, and I get treated like sh**. Well then it's over. Oh, and not to mention they didn't give me a bonus either, well yet. This is the first year they didn't. I freakin' worked 5 days a week all summer at the age of 15 years old. I stayed to the BITTER end of the season and you can't give me $100..Well go have fun without me next season. Seriously, I'm so pissed about this.

At least you still got in, free at that. The other lady was following pre-set rules, I'm sure. We all have to do that sometimes.

Take a deep breath and realize that you still made out okay by getting in free.

I don't know why, but I just thought I felt the need to update this thread one last time. My last post in this thread wasn't exactly happy or nice..for that matter :p I said I would never work for them again..and blah blah blah, but I guess it was the heat of the moment and now there is no place I would rather work. Around here, it's either Six Flags, McDonald's, or the mall and I am certainly never doing retail again after last season. I can't deal with rude guests and bosses anymore, and frankly I was tired of it.

Last year I had a love/hate relationship with my job but looking back on it now I can't believe I ever actually did that department, ever. The people were rude, the bosses were rude, I got paid much less then I should've been for all the work we do, I often did things I never wanted to, I handled money(which is something I will never want to do again), and let's just say I will never want to do any of that again. I had to talk into a microphone, and being a shy person didn't make that easy. I was always getting yelled at for stupid things. Brakes were sparce, it was 45 mins and we could have been stuck at a game for 4 hrs or more.

I told my mom if I had no other choice of depts. I'm not working there next year. Well, thank GOD for my sister who worked in entertainment last year. She dragged me into it, and honestly it doesn't sound too promising. I am a costume character now/an escort/and I am in parade to. When I say I love my job, I mean LOVE! I want to leave early for work everyday(I usually work nightshift). I love being a character, it's the best job in the world. We get plenty of breaks. It is hot, yes, but I really don't mind it AT ALL. I have so much fun and I love making people happy. I act like such a fool because no one knows who it is. I give hugs, high-fives, dance, take photos, etc. I've met such good friends and fit right in with entertainment, which is hard because we're all pretty weird. :p;) But anyway, I just thought I'd update this one last time and clarify what I managed to do with a bad season and started with a new season. This proves that you can love where you work. If games offered me a higher salary to come back(and they did), I would NEVER go back. I get paid $8.60 now, not bad for a 16 year old. ;) I never thought this job would appeal to me but long story short, when an oppurtunity comes take it, you never know what may come out of it.

Oh, and no mean supervisors, no stupid rules, no talking to the public, no money involved! :p Life is good

The only thing I can complain about is the injuries sustained, which haven't been terrible for me but it can be horrific. Guests don't know how to be gentle. The only terrible thing that happened to me was my back was jumped on and the shoulder pad collasped on my right shoulder and it HURT so bad, and still does. This happened 3 weeks ago..:o But other then that, I wouldn't trade this job for anything right now.

How  ! I always admired the folks in those costumes. It's gotta be hot and I've seen people jump them. But, honestly, I'd love it too! What better way to act like a fool and not be recognized! I'm SOOOO happy you love your job! Sometimes things suck before they get better. I like happy endings!!! Thanks for the uppity date!
