Dan Fogelberg dies of cancer at 56

Sun Dec 16, 5:55 PM

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, famed for the soaring vocals and elegant instrumentation of tunes such as "Longer" and "A Love Like This," died on Sunday, three years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He was 56.

"He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," said a posting on his Web site (http://www.danfogelberg.com).

"His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him."

Fogelberg, a native of Peoria, Illinois, broke into the music industry in the early 1970s, at a time when it was embracing introspective songwriting, or "soft rock," by such acts as the Eagles and America.

Fogelberg, who distinguished himself with his angelic vocals and lyrics that celebrated beauty and romance, hit his commercial and creative peak in 1981 with "The Innocent Age," which yielded three top-10 singles, "Hard to Say," "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Leader of the Band."

His most recent release, "Full Circle," came out in 2003. The following year, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, and urged men over the age of 50 to get tested for the disease.

oh my goodness... I never even saw this in the NY Times. He was such an amazing singer/songwriter. Sigh. Will have to download some of his songs to play in remembrance.

He was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2004. He made a point of publicizing the urgency for men to get the antigen test for this cancer (a blood test) and the physical exam.

He did beat it back, though he and his wife Jean knew it would be a lifelong awareness and management of the illness. Sadly, lifelong was just a couple of more years.

I don't think Dan would have been squeamish about getting the physical part of the test, especially if he had known...but he probably 'felt fine'.

Please nag the men you know to get checked....especially important after 40 years of age.

Beautiful voice and presence.

I saw this the other day and I felt deeply saddened (and choked up & teary). He was so young! Definitely one of my favorite musicians, I loved his work, when we got married, we asked the vocalist to sing "Longer" in the middle of the ceremony. I love that song. His music touched so many people. RIP Dan, and may God bless your family.

I read that the other day and was so saddened to learn it.

Ever since, "Leader of the Band" has been playing in my head nonstop.

Rest in peace, Dan.

Scott and I were driving today and a Dan Fogelberg song came on the radio. I said something about him dying and Scott didn't know about it either. I was never a big fan of his, but was still so saddened to hear of his death.
