Poor little Peggy has a swollen paw, so she went to the vet today. I brought her to the vet's office because my mother and Reinhold were busy with their restaurant today.

There's an abcess in one of Peggy's pads, and the infection goes up to the claw. It looks like a bite or an injury from a thorn. The vet said there's a high risk that the bone might get infected, so she has to take antibiotics for at least 8 days. In a week, she needs to go back for another check up.

Poor little girl! She has problems walking, and she whines when you touch her paw. Needless to say, she'll be an indoor girl the next days (something I'm really happy about, to be honest).

Here are some pictures I took after her vet visit. She's resting in her new favourite spot on the attic, and you can see how swollen her paw is looking (her right front paw).

Poor Peggy.:( It sure looks sore and I hope she'll heal up quickly. Too bad she can't become an indoor cat all of the time.

I just spoke to my mom on the phone, and she said that today, her paw looks even more swollen, and she's walking on three legs. :( Could be that it just takes some time for the meds to kick in, but to be on the safer side, she'll go back to the white coats. Yesterday, her vet mentioned the risk of her bone getting infected, as it's very close to the affected area. I hope this did not happen by now!!!

I'm on my way now and will keep you updated!

Awe... poor, sweet Peggy!! I hope the vet will be able to provide her some relief and that the bone is affected! Gentle hugs and pets to Peggy.

Thanks! :)

Well, the abscess opened today and a lot of pus and blood came out. And she's whining and even hissing when you touch her paw. She's also licking her paw a lot.

But the vet said it's good that that the wound is now open; btw, he thinks it's a marten bite. :( Poor little Peggy!! And when things go very bad, it could be that the affected digit has to be amputated. :(

Here are some photos I took after the vet visit, they are very graphic, so please scroll down if you want to take a look:

Doesn't it look just awful? Poor Peggy is so miserable!! She's not eating much and looks depressed, but she wanted some cuddle time after the vet visit, and she even purred when she got some bellyrubs. :)

It looks so painful but I'm sure she is feeling some relief now that the wound is draining. I hope that she will heal up wonderfully and will not require any surgery. But if she does, I'm sure she'll do just fine and adjust to whatever changes take place. My cat 'Tiny' had to have all but one toe amputated on her left front foot and she is the spunkiest little thing we've ever seen and doesn't let it get in her way at all. She races around and plays just like the rest of them. I do hope that Peggy gets better with each day and will not need any surgery whatsoever. :)

Poor sweet Peggy. That does look painful, but happy to hear that it broke. It must relieve the pressure and pain some. Have a full and speedy recovery sweetie.

Does Peggy use a litter box at all Kirsten, as I would also be concerned about the litter getting into the opening. I know they have special litter for things like this, like for when a cat is declawed. Maybe your Mom could ask the vet and look into it and I PRAY that she will keep her inside until she is completely healed, so she doesn't get dirt in it or hurt it even more so.

Please give her a kiss on that pretty little head of her's. :)

Here there is a litter called "Yesterday's News," made from old newspaper, which is better to use for cats that have open wounds on their paws. Is there anything like that in Germany? Maybe Peggy's vet will have some suggestions.

A marten bite! That must have HURT. I am glad the wound opened and is draining now...the healing will go faster!

Did the vet say anything to your mom about Peggy being INDOORS from now on? ;)

What the heck is a marten? Is that a type of spider or something? Will have to look this up now...

Poor Peggy. I hope it starts to heal up quickly. I know Calloway's abscess on his tail took a while to heal. I had to put warm compresses on it, and use betadine.

OMG... that is just a nasty looking creature!!! Never seen one here in PA, that's for sure! But maybe we call them something else? They're really unpleasant looking. She's probably lucky she didn't get hurt worse. I hope Peggy gets to stay inside from now on!

Martens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marten) in Europe are kind of like fishers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_%28animal%29) in North America. Either is a good reason to keep a cat indoors.

Martens, or Marder as they are called here, sure look like rodents, but actually they are little carnivores. They are not very popular here as they cause damage in cars by chewing the cords.

Looks like Peggy really got involved in a fight with one, as today, the abscess opened on the opposite site of her pad as well, and it looked very nasty, full of pus and liquid. I will post some photos of her later. She looked very miserable earlier today (and hissed at me when she got her pill), but my mother just called to tell me that Peggy has started walking around on three legs, and she even wanted to go out (which of course she wasn't allowed to).

I'll post some new pics of her later!

Poor sweet Peggy. I'm hoping that the abcess draining on its own is a good thing and Peggy isn't in as much pain. Please give her some feel better scritchies and lovies from me? My prayers continue for Peggy's complete and speedy recovery with no complications.

Well, at least she's not allowed to go outside for the time being, but I wish I could convince my mother that Peggy is better off as a permanent indoor girl.

She's doing a bit better today. Her paw is less swollen and looks less infected, but it's still looking bad enough to give you a scare.

This was her yesterday when she was still feeling miserable and very ill. You can even see her third eyelid:

Two hours ago, my mother called to tell me that Peggy is demanding to go out. I heard her complaining on the phone. LOL She's definitely feeling better, and even tried to walk on four legs to convince my mom that she's well enough to go out - but it did not help her. ;)

I think your mom's vet should tell her about being indoor...and it would help Peggy if Dino was indoors also! :) Glad she is feeling well enough to try and 'fool' her mom! :D

Well, Dino is going nuts when he's indoors, espcially after Peggy moved in. He refused to enter the house, and when you take him inside, he's acting totally agressive. But I think there would be a chance to get Peggy accustomed to the life of an indoor cat. But my mother never listens to me! *sigh* She and Reinhold even tell me it's animal abuse to keep Luna and Lily inside!

Oh, poor Peggy, that paw must have been hurting bad. :( I'm glad that the medicine seems to kick in, and hopefully she'll be fine in a few days.

I wish your mother would keep her inside though - I bet Peggy wants to go and get revenge. Not a good idea!

She has the most amazing markings, what a pretty girl. :)

Oh my gosh, that was one nasty infection! I'm sure she's been running a fever, that's why she hasn't been eating! Poor baby, I hope that antibiotic is kicking in now. I understand your lack of control over your Mom and Reinhold, Kirsten, but it sure would be hard letting her back outside with those nasty Marlens again! :(

Thank you!! :) Her paw looked so much better today!! Almost back to its normal size. :) It still seems to hurt, but Peggy's almost back to her old self, looks like the antibiotics did a good job. :)

Hi Peggy, I'm happy to know that your ouchie paw is getting better. Just be sure to take your medicine and remember that the whitecoat is your friend. Please don't worry about being an indoor kitty. I've been an indoor kitty since Meowmie and Soncat adopted me when I was a baby. It's really not so bad, you can have lots of fun inside finding great hidey places to sleep and play. My squirrel and bird friends visit me at my window and we talk and talk all day. But most important, it's safe inside. There are no cars to worry about, no kids chasing you all over and no scary animals that might hurt you. I heard Meowmie say that some hoomins aren't very nice to kitties and sometimes there are stories about them on PT. When you stay inside, you're always warm and dry plus your food dish is always right there so you can munch out anytime you want to. And you never have to worry about getting lost and not being able to find your home or purrents. I love to explore our house when Meowmie and Soncat are at work, often I find a new place to play hide & seek with my family. That's loads of fun. Well, I have to go now and get ready for a case in Cat Court tomorrow. There are lots of indoor kitties here at PT and we're all here for you!

Your friend,
Groucho

I am glad to hear Peggy looks and feels better.
I think that was dangerous. These martens are known to be killers and I suppose they could hurt a kitty badly (while I still think they are the cutest little bad guys ;)).
Peggy was lucky that she only was bitten in the paw.
All the best to her.

@Groucho: That is is sweet of you to talk to Peggy, and to help her becoming an indoor cat. I only wish my mother and Reindhold would see things the same way! *sigh*

Oh yes, a couple of years ago, Dino got bitten by one in his face. The abscess was as big as an egg! But the vet opened it and it healed very well.

Peggy's paw is looking much better today and is back to its normal size. But she's still walking very carefully. Tomorrow, she'll go back to the vet, and he will decide if she has to continue with her antibiotics.

Thanks for asking! ) And sorry for the lack of update.

Had a terrible fight with my mother the day I brought Peggy to the vet (not because of her, but something else). Anyway, the vet said 6 more days on antibiotics, and for that time, she's not allowed to go out. Well, I'm afraid my mother will let her go outside as soon as these 6 days are over. :( She's so stubborn!!

The day we went to the vet, her paw, even though it looked much better, wasn't fully healed, one spot was still bleeding. She has been bitten very badly. :( :( :(
