I know there are a few members on here from Germany so here goes. You know growing up my father would tell stories, now I wish I listened, my daughter is doing a heritage project. I can't even remember my grandparents first names.

Anyway my Dad always said something like, your grandmother immigrated here from Germany after/because of the prussian war. I looked up the prussian war and it was in 1870, that would have made her not even born yet, she died in 1970 or around there and was probably in her 80's So why would that have caused her to move here? Did Germany go through a big depression after that?

Germany went into a giant depression post-WW1. (which set the stage for Herr schickelgruber) Between 1870 and WW1 the German economy was fairly good.

I am not sure when she immigrated but my father was born here in 1918 and he was not the oldest, so it would seem that she moved here before World War 1, I need to find links to world history and our family history(for my project...hehe)

That site is very good but it helps if you have some names.

IF she came in through Ellis Island, you can locate her ship passage on this link:

This site gives no info unless you join and pay.

From one of the links on the first page. Ancestry.com is the one you have to pay for, most of the other links go to free information. I have been researching our German ancestors and found a lot of useful information from that site. :)

The Mormons are really big on genealogy and have this free site: http://www.familysearch.org/

Good luck!

I can't even remember my grandparents first names.

True story. My great grandparents are buried at Bohemian National Cemetery, which is on the north side of Chicago. I had a job interview not far from there and decided to stop at the cemetery while I was in the neighborhood - it's a long way from where I live now. I went into the office for help locating their grave site. The clerk asked for the family name and when he asked my great grandmother's first name, without thinking I said, "Grandma..." And he just burst out laughing. I know their names and my great grandmother's first name is NOT Grandma! Whoops! He understood completely, though.
