Oh, Cinder, I can't believe what they did to you - and just for a little licking! But I bet that shot stopped the itching quick - at least for awhile. Jack empathizes with you. He hated the way he looked after he had those bumps cut off him - they shaved spots that looked really weird too - plus they put stitches in some - what was that all about if they didn't want him to lick!

Anyway the hair does grow back and pretty soon you look like new. Love ya, Cinder!

Aw Cinder, even when you aren't quite up to snuff, I so enjoy reading your post and the entire thread!

For bichons with hot spots, we are told to add some salmon to the diet to help with the healing. Can't hurt (unless you are allergic to fish!), and tastes great!

Take care sweetie, we still luv ya darlin'!

Cinder, what is a "hot spot"?

Short Answer: A NASTY **itch**! :(

Long Answer:

Pyotraumatic Dermatitis (aka "Hot Spots")
Hot spots occur as single, intensely pruitic (itchy) lesions resulting from self-inflicted trauma to the skin. These lesions can appear within minutes and predominantly occur when allergic reactions within the skin cause a sensation of itchiness or pain. The dog attempts to alleviate the symptom by licking, chewing, or scratching which leads to trauma and further inflammation to the skin. Labrador retrievers, Golden retrievers, St. Bernards, Collies, and German Shepherds show an increased breed predisposition for developing hot spots most likely because these breeds have a higher incidence for allergic reactions which are the number one underlying cause for hot spots.

Cause: The most common causes for hot spot development in the dog are allergic conditions associated with: flea allergies, atopy (http://www.labbies.com/atopy.htm), food allergy (http://www.labbies.com/foodreactions.htm), parasites (mange), anal gland problems, clipping and grooming (which can cause localized inflammation of the skin), or skin infection. Yeast infections, drug reactions, and autoimmune disorders are less commonly the cause of hot spots. ...(continued) ...

Cinder, itchy skin is no fun, so I'm glad to hear you got some stuff for it - even though you had to get shaved. But don't you worry, your wonderful fur will grow back in a few months.

Now, if you play your cards right, you'll get extra treats! ;) Hope you'll heal up fast!

Awwww, Cinder! Please, pretty please, try not to scratch. I am guessing you can't have an anti-itch medicine on there because of what might happen if you were to lick it off. So please, and this is from a nurse, please try not to scratch. Your Dad's anti-lickers are no fun but the spot needs to heal. I promise I won't look at the shaved patch, just your beautiful face.

I agree. With what? Keegan gets a mixture of Willard Water, Calendula and some homeopathics that the vet mixed up for us, its slower going that pred and antibiotics but much better for her liver and general health.

I shave the area myself and make sure they don't bother it. Make sure to keep it dry and clean. Usually, that does the trick, but if not I spray one of the many Hot Spot sprays available.

Hot Spots are so common and very easily treatable without medications, atleast they have been for me so far.

Simba and Nala get them often from being splashed by Kiara and Mufasa by the pool. The water gets trapped and creates a hot spot.

Phred, some of my Golden Retriever friends strongly recommend a mixture of regular Listerine (the gold kind) and Gold Bond Powder. I'll have to do a little investigating to make sure I tell you correctly. But like Kay, I think it does probably have to be shaved on long haired dogs.

Hope you're healing up, Cinder!
