Has anyone heard of a cat changing color? We recently got a black cat at the local shelter. He is around 6 months old. A few days later he had a necklace of grey around his neck and as time goes by we notice more and more grey patches. The underside of his tail is also becoming more and more grey. In all the years we've had cats I've never seen one change color!

I think maybe someone colored his fur before brought in to the shelter.
OR...he is very sick from something.Maybe stress from before you guys got him.If it's from sickness or past related stress...it's highly unusual.
I'd get blood work anyway.Maybe cut some hair...save it to see if it was colored.
Strange. That would really scare me a bit.
I hope it was just someone coloring it.
But..I hope if it WAS colored...I hope it didn't hurt it's insides.
Poor thing :(

Does your kitty look like this? The coats these cats have are called "black smoke" and are perfectly normal - I think these cats are stunning!

Cat Family Beau had been sick before we brought him home with an upper respiratory infection and the shelter had him in foster care but he had been brought back to the shelter. He was still taking Baytril when he came home to us but is finished now. The shelter had him 3 months (including the foster care time) so its not likely he was colored with something thank goodness.

;) I've had several foster cats that went from black, to gray, and back to a shiny, shimmery black again! Nothing wrong, just interesting!

He's a real beauty! :)

OOH!! He is GORGEOUS!!! Look at that pretty ruff he has by his neck too! Glad you took him in and that he's feeling better!

When my cat spends time in the sun, her coat (which is grey) picks up sort of a brownish color. Especially in the summertime. As hot as it is, she likes to nap between the window and the curtain. Beau is gorgeous and I really like his full, fluffy tail! I hope he feels much better soon.

You Have A Real Find There As Black Smoke Cats Are Not All That Common And You Are I Believe Going To Be Very Pleasantly Surprised And Pleased When Your New Companion Matures Into His Final Coloring.
Please Keep Us Updated As He Changes Shades.

I've never ever seen such beautiful colors in a cat, like the one you got.(I keep coming back to see them again)
Absolutly stunning.
Also crazy-cat-over's cat pictures also are just gorgeous.
At first I thought...my goodness maybe someone had it a beauty contest and colored it
But then you showed the pictures.
You got a beautiful rescued cat.
I wish you the best with him :)
I can't wait to see more pictures to see the colorings more.
