Yahoo has a slideshow of Reuters photos of the nine tons of beached squid (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20020727/ap_on_re_us/brf_dying_squid_2) in La Jolla, CA.

Too bad they had to die and couldn't be saved.:( Hopefully no more will wash up on shore.

Paul, this is one of those events that defies the usual and customary. I always wonder what out of balance condition these events create. It's a shame that the squid can't be used to feed other animals or can they? I don't recall reading how they were disposing of them. Mother Nature can be cruel and so can the effects of mankind! Great story, thank you for bringing it to the forefront.

Poor things. :(

It is so weird how this stuff happens, even if they are a bit "yucky", it's sad to see so many of them helpless.

Is there am effort going on to help them back into the water?

The squid were covering the beach, I believe they were following the grunion (spelling?) and got caught in a cove, it was really a shame this happened. The grunion are little fish that come up on shore to drop their eggs and then wash back out again. People come and can catch them with their hands and I guess they eat them. But I heard they are pretty bony and not very good. They usually come up late at night. I don't know how they are going to dispose of the squid, there is so much of it, they were putting them in buckets. I guess they are blaming this on El Nino
