View Full Version : Something new - an ad on Pet Talk (for some)

We are trying something new, and you may have noticed an ad at the top of Pet Talk. If you are not seeing the ad (a Eukanuba one, with a Lab in it), but have an extra space at the top, then you - like me - are probably on a Macintosh. Do others see it? What do you think?

I noticed the extra space at top and was just about to e-mail you to ask. ;) So, like you, I don't see the add.

Karen, for a while I've been thinking... how about putting the text "Today's Dog of the day" etc. under the pictures? Everything would also align with the rest, and you could even make the pictures a little bigger. Well, I guess you put it there to save space below.

See what I mean here!

Sometimes I have a white space and sometimes I have a yorkie on the top.

well I saw the space, but thought maybe it was because I´m now using my regular comp and not the house one which has a different screen display (size)......

aaaand I´m positively NOT using a Mac...... so why can´t I see the ad......

I can't see the ad either. I am not using a MAC. I'm using a self built PC. But still no ad.

Thanks folks - Eukanuba only wants US and Canadian viewers for this campaign, so people outside of that area may see nothing, as they could have it geo-targeted. Or it could be a flaw in their system.

I saw it a minute ago. It had a German Shepard in the ad, not a lab. I cant see it anymore though.

I guess it rotates different breeds of dog. The one I saw had a Lab, but different dogs is also good!

I can't see it either. I have my laptop (PC) set to disable a lot of stuff, but banner ads aren't in the category.

Now its a yorkie. I agree, different dogs are good. I wonder why it comes and goes, I dont see it again?

I've been seeing the ads on almost all pages all day.

I've tried it in both IE 7.0.57 and Firefox 2.0.0.3 and both are displaying ads.

I have NoScript on my Firefox browser which blocks ads, but I know there is an ad there. Where the ad is are the words 'Ad blocked by KPF' - KPF is my firewall. :)

No ads here. I haven't seen any all day, and I am on a Dell computer. Will see if they show on my laptop at home.

I'm at work on Internet Exploder. Sometimes I see the ad and sometimes there's just a big white space. At home, I use Adblock.

ETA: If you are needing money, I'd much rather donate a small amount of money every month to not see the ad(and support PT) I think you would benefit more from it as lots of people like me block the ads and don't click on them. I realize this is just in trial stages so this info is for the future.

Blank - I am using Firefox.

I opened IE - and saw the ad when I first went to the Pet Talk page. Then white space again.

I am on a PC, running XP Home

I see it.

I see nothing but a large space, however I do use an ad-blocker add-on for FireFox so I never see ads, anyway.

EDIT: However, when I open PT in an IE-tab within FireFox (basically, opening PT in IE) it does show up for me. So I will confirm that it shows up, just not in FireFox because of my Ad-Block add-on.

EDIT2: And I will also add, whether I could see the ad or not, I don't mind an ad here or there for sites that I support and trust. It's the sites that just become grossly overrun with ads that make me annoyed.

I saw it once earlier, thought I was crazy. I have Firefox, it's just a blank space now. I tried IE and it was there, a boxer was on.

I second that.

This is the first time I've seen it and it surprised me, like "Oh! What's that?"
But I totally understand why your trying it out. Doesn't bother me a bit:)

NOT seeing the Ad below the header ???

You may have to **CLICK** on the blank space!! ;)

Usin a NON-Mac - "PC" running Windows XP/Home and Internet Explorer 6.0.29 ~

I see only the "blank space" UNTIL I *LEFT Click* on that space ...
THEN the ad appears and stays on as long as THAT page remains active.

There is also a TIMER involved ...
*click* to activate the ad, leave the ad-enabled page and open another page
that COULD have an ad - and it's not there ...
*Click* the Blank Space again - and I don't see the ad ... apparently enough "time" hasn't elapsed.

(Example: I "clicked & activated" the ad on this page - am writing my reply - and the ad is STILL visible if I xcroll up --- it's been there 5 minutes plus.)

So the ad's there - you just have to trick it into appearing!

:D

That is bad. Hopefully the ad serving company can fix their code.

I greatly appreciate reading everyone's comments. I think we will test this advertising concept for about a week.

Tried what Phred said about clicking ont he space, doesn't change a thing.

Oh well.

I've never seen it and my computer is windows xp. I was wondering what the extra white space was for. I also have pop up blocker so maybe this is the reason I don't see it.

Yup, saw it a minute ago and was confuzzled for a minute (thats my own word for puzzled ans confused :D) Its not there now. I did notice a big white space earlier today.

Hmmmm... I'm on Firefox and saw it on the other computer which has IE. Wonder if your browser also has something to do with it?

mrspunkysmom

I can't see it either.

I viewed the source code of the webpage to check on the advertisers URL. I'm not blocking that particular one. I have popups okayed for pet talk. I see tons of other banner ads on other websites so I can't think what it is.

There is a possibility that if the advertiser is restricting the ad to certain locales, that it is restricting by IP address. Many of us use companies that that are global or close to that. So there is a blanket restriction on certain ranges of IP addresses and hence we are not seeing the AD.

As to why someone can see it for a second or two and then it disappears, who know?

Just my take.

I see it on the index page, but not on any other pages. It shows up as an extra space.

When I initially got on PT, it popped up. But now that I'm going through threads, it's gone.

Randi, you're right! There were ads earlier this morning. I never had a problem with them, though. :)

Due to a couple technical user problems, we removed the ad. But if we could have one banner ad at the top of the page that was animal-focussed we might try something else.

Ugh, now I get all sorts of weird error messages, on both my desktop (cable connected) and my laptop (wifi connected). I was not getting it before.

I get the "i" logo and "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage:

Easy to type, it is up there now. It was better before they fixed it; isn't that often the way?

I don't like it at all. It's making PT run slower for me, and I also keep getting wierd messages.

Yes, instead of "fixing it," they apparently made it worse. We have taken the ad down.
