Sorry but I had to post this:
Its an email I received. PEOPLE are SSOOOO stupid. This does mention a dog tho so It is dog related somewhat. I can't believe other people went along with it!! Read On:

The "Stella" Awards are very similar the Darwin awards. Stella Liebeck
> is the 81 year old lady who spilled coffee on herself and sued
McDonalds.
> This case inspired an annual award- The "Stella" Award - for the most

> frivolous lawsuits in the U.S. The following are 2000-2001
candidates:
>
> 1. January 2000: Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded
> $780,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping
over a
> toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The owners of the
store
> were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the
misbehaving
> little child was Ms. Robertson's son.
>
> 2. June 1998: 19 year old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won $74,000 and
> medical expenses when his neighbor ran over Carl's hand with his
Honda
> Accord. Mr. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the
> wheel of the car when trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.
>
> 3. October 1998: Terrence Dickinson of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was
> leaving a house he had just finished robbing by way of the garage. He
was
> not able to get the garage door to go up since the automatic door
opener
> was malfunctioning. He couldn't reenter the house because the door
> connecting the house and garage had locked when he pulled it shut. As
the
> family was on vacation, Mr.Dickson found himself locked in the garage
for
> eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found there and a
large
> bag of dry dog food. He sued the homeowner's insurance claiming the
> situation caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed to the
tune of
> half a million dollars.
>
> 4. October 1999: Jerry Williams of Little Rock, Arkansas was awarded
> $14,500 and medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by
his
> next door neighbor's beagle. The beagle was on a chain in its owner's

> fenced-in yard. The award was less than sought because the jury felt
the
> dog might have been just a little provoked at the time by Mr.
Williams
> who was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet gun.
>
> 5. May 2000: A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay Amber
Carson
> of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, $113,500 after she slipped on a soft
drink
> and broke her coccyx. The beverage was on the floor because Ms.
Carson
> threw it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.
>
> 6. December 1997: Kara Walton of Claymont, Delaware, successfully
sued
> the owner of a night club in a neighboring city when she fell from
the
> bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This

> occurred while Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the window in
the
> ladies room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge. She was awarded
> $12,000 and dental expenses.
>
> And the winner is:
>
> Mr. Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City. In November 2000 Mr. Grazinski
> purchased a brand new 32 foot Winnebago motor home. On his first trip

> home, having entered the freeway, he set the cruise control at 70 mph
and
> calmly left the drivers seat to go into the back and make himself a
cup of
> coffee. Not surprisingly the Winnie left the freeway, crashed and
> overturned. Mr. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising him in the
> handbook that he couldn't actually do this. He was awarded $1,750,000
plus
a
> new Winnie. (Winnebago has actually changed their handbooks as a
result of
> this court case, just in case there are any other complete morons
buying
> their vehicles.)

Ya know, it's idiotic things like the winner did that make you wonder if these people don't purposely look for ways to beat the system, minor flaws that seem common sense.

The intent of the law and the letter of the law is often mixed up, much to the benefit of greedy and unethical lawyers. A truly fine profession, being given a very bad reputation by truly pathetic people, and their useless clients! This is why we all love animals so much, don't you think???

God I hate our justice system. Stupidity reigns supreme. Those are almost as insane as the Darwin awards....my personal favorites. I haven't seen the 2001 Darwins....anyone else?

I sure haven't mugsy!

They (recently?) compiled a bunch of 'em into a book--anyone else read it? Good for a few laughs!

Oh I HAVE to get that one!!

Yes I have read the latest Darwin book. Not as good as the first -- a little too much stretch in it. The first one is VERY funny.

But I have to disagree about our legal system. It is a fine system, but as I always tell people -- a jury is made up of 12 people who couldn't get out of it. When have you ever heard anyone say..."I am so happy I have been called for jury duty"? In Illinois judges are elected. What fraction of the fraction of people who vote bother to know anything about the candidates?

Any of these awards that are actually paid (many will be overturned -- either by summary judgement or on appeal) will be paid by insurance companies. And insurance companies are perceived to be big, deep-pocketed, evil bloodsuckers who deserve to pay. (Not that they do of course -- we...the policyholders pay the settlement.)

And finally...there is the pervasive attitude that if something "bad" happens to us -- it is someone else's fault and someone must pay.

And I said I would leave my politics off this board

Proves my theory that SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST TOO DAMN STUPID TO LIVE!!! and that there are alot of lawsuit happy people out there and greedy lawyers willing to take on their cases. Makes me ill.

Whew, sure glad to hear that!!! I do remember when the woman received the McDonald's award, though. The award was actually meant to be punitive to McDonald's because at the time, coffee was being kept at a very high and dangerous heat in many fast food type places. I remember scalding my tongue on more than one occasion! No wonder the coffee was so yucky.
In awarding, they usually determine damages (for the plaintiff) and then punitive damages (to the defendant) I believe - ? Anyone?

Wow!http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/wow1.gif I can't believe that all of these people were awarded so much money for such stupid lawsuits. What's this world coming to?

Nina: I don't think Candy was yelling at you specifically, she was just trying to make a point to us in general.
krazyaboutkatz
Candy stated that these are false, URBAN LEGEND.
And Finally:
Puffin and Popcornbird
If you can't play nice, don't play at all. I have only been on a couple threads with the 2 of you and I am already sick of it. LEAVE EACH OTHER ALONE!!! We don't want to see it on our posts. I agree this is a mindless thread, but if it was about one of our pets and the 2 of you went at it, I would not be happy. And I know others wouldn't be either. We just lost a member b/c of this kind of behaivor. If you want to play "tag your it" or "I'm rubber your'e glue, what bounces off me sticks to you" then PM or email each other, for goodness sake.

Thank you Staci for your kind words.

Nina: I was not yelling at you and I apolagize that you took it that way. I was just trying to emphasize that these are false and was happy to report that they were. So many times our justice system fails to do what needs to be done and I was glad that these ridiculous claims were proven to be false. I know the McDonalds case was real but the rest are not.

Puffin: I agree with Staci. This is not a site that enjoys the satire of sick humor. Please stop the unnecessary poking and demeaning of other members. That is not what Pet Talk is about. It is to the point that I don't even want to read your posts and I can honestly say I have never had a problem like that on Pet Talk before!
