This is a coconut crab from Vanuatu.
Evidently, some kids who sometimes go out to play in the coconut groves have had their foot nipped off.
Horrible looking things......... eh ???
Just do me a favour would you ??? Just check around your feet, and if you feel a movement....it could be one of those.

Squizz (noun) : look - "take a squizz at this"

according to wiki, they are edible, and are considered an aphrodisiac by the natives.

They are just about extinct in Vanuatu, evidently they are a delicacy, and yes....an aphrodisiac. But on some islands there's heaps of them. On Christmas Island, which is Aussie territory, they are protected and there is millions of them. Trouble is tho....they only come out at night, so I guess you'd have to watch where you sleep....lol.

 Woah! That thing would give you one heck of a fright if you went to put the rubbish out one morning and there it was on the bin! :p

Nature is amazing though, to be able to create creatures like that.

I've seen one of them in a smaller version on the Travel Channel, featuring Vanuatu. Nature is amazing......he has the right tools to crack open a coconut, doesn't he?!!

In Vanuatu even the starfish looks quite pre-historic!!!!!
