In your opinion, what is the best canon digital camera out there right now. I don't want a digital SLR camera as I'm not interested in getting different lenses and such. So i guess just a point and shoot. I want a decent zoom but that's not a huge deal. People have been telling me that the Canon PowerShot A640 is a good one. What do you guys reccomend?

I have the Canon S2 IS - I LOVE it - but it is a bit bulky for a point and shoot camera.
I recently got the Nikon Coolpix S50 - It is very much point and shoot and takes AWESOME pics!

Here are some pics I've taken with the Nikon S50

I have a Canon S1 IS and like Staci says it's pretty bulky.
The other one I have is more point and shoot and fits in my purse. It's a Canon Power Shot SD110 Digital Elph (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/sd110.html) . It has a 2x zoom.

Not even a year ago I bought a Canon Powershot SD550.. I did a ton of research on it and had a fair amount of confidence in the Canon brand since I've owned before, however, I don't think I'll be buying from Canon again.. my camera suddently stopped working with a lens error (it doesn't work at all) and apparently Canon does not take care of it under warranty even if it's not from misuse.. there is a whole website devoted to the error (its called e18 or something?) and a lot of people have had dead on arrivals while Canon refuses to fix it. Something to consider when buying from Canon.

I just bought the Canon Powershot A560 and LOVE it.

You can do side by side comparisons between similar models.

Go to http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=113

You can also go to dpreview.com and get information.

The one you mentioned uses FOUR AA batteries; the one I have uses 2. There are other differences, of course.

I have an S2 but that is probably a lot bulkier than you would like. My sister has a Canon PowerShot SD600 and it takes great pictures, I love it. I'm thinking of purchasing one myself to take places where I don't want a bigger bulkier camera.

The canon S2 is the one I've been really interested in. It came out a few years back though, are there newer versions of that camera, if so are they any good?

the new version is the Canon S3 IS - the only one I know with that version is 4/5 Dog Mom - Diana.
I don't know much about it - b/c I love my S2 so much! ;) But I think she really likes it.
I keep the neck strap on it so that I can keep it out which helps make it a bit more convenient. But for a small camera - my Nikon - I'm loving it!

Paul has a Canon S3IS, I had (Prior to it's untimely demise brought about by a road trip) a Canon S2IS, and am getting an S3 (Should be in tomorrow)

The main issue with Canon's cameras isn't Canon's issue alone, as the main point of failure is the CCD array. There are only a couple of CCD manufacturers, so a problem for one is normally a problem for most. At least Canon was upfront enough to issue a recall. From what I've seen, if you have a problem with the CCD they will take care of it, it just takes a little persistence.

There's also an S5 IS but it's like $500 and it doesn't seem worth the upgrade.

I'm looking into Nikon right now. I sort of had my heart set on a canon though but shais_mom sure has awesome pictures with hers.

Does anyone know the rough price of an S3?

They're usually $349.99 without a sale price on them here.

Beach Camera sells the camera for $290. Shipping cost depends on how quick;y you want it (as usual)

Okay, thanks!

I'm leaning towards the S3 but some of the reviews have been saying that the S2 is better. But since the S3 is newer shouldn't it be upgraded a bit more? Maybe I'm just reading biased reviews...

It's just because the S3 only has like a new scene mode and a bigger LCD or something. It's not a huge improvement from the S2.

The S2 probably wouldn't be available now except as a refurb.

The S-3 is at the end of it's run, so prices are pretty good.

Many of the S2 vs S3 reviews I read were mainly disappointed that the S3 was a minimal upgrade over the S2, with a large difference in price.

Not required in MY case! :)

My Canon A70, which HAS to be 4 or 5 years old, had been a faithful *snapper*
till the Upper Sandusky PawzFest - when Ole Reliable took 47  BLANK snappies!

I discovered the non-existent photos on Monday, June 18, and decided to
Call Mr. Canon at the Help Desk.

The Tech listened to my Tail of Grief & Woe; then told me he had a pretty good idea
that the CCD had started to fail ... and promised the problem would return. :(
"WHAT can I do?" wailed I.

"Quit Blubberin! We'll FixZit for FREE - it's a manufacturing defect!
Will take a week or 10 days ... we'll even spring for the shipping - BOTH ways!"

June 11: First (and ONLY) call to Canon = "We'll FixZit for FREE!"
June 12: Received "Free" UPS Call tag - good for free shipment TO Canon
June 13: Camera Boxed & Dropped off at a reasonably nearby UPS Drop Box
June 13 (6:00 PM) UPS had it and it was on it's way
June 15: Canon signed for the Camera when UPS delivered it in Illinois
June 18 (Monday): Canon started work; agreed to Free Fix
June 19: "Tech 2" confirmed via E-mail it was Fixed & Tested
June 20: Wrapped & given to FedEx at 4:46 PM (Wednesday)
June 22 (Friday @ 3:11 PM) the FedEx girl *knocked* on the Ranch door!

And it WORKS Again!!
THANKS, Mr. Canon!!

I am a big Canon fan! I've owned Canon cameras since 1992. (Rebel II SLR, Rebel XS SLR, digital A40, digital S2) Last week I just bought my FIFTH Canon camera, the S3.

My favorite is the S3 because of all the things it can do. It has 12x optical zoom, a neat feature called 'color accent' (allows you to have one thing in color the rest in B/W), fast start up and shooting times and great video capability with sound. Plus a host of other neat features for a person to experiment with while learning.

I'd highly recommend the S3 for several reasons:
It can be used simply as a point and shoot
It can be used with more advanced settings as you learn them
It can be used as a mini video camera
A super macro mode allowing for focusing on items laid directly on the lens!!!
It has a great optical zoom and 6 megapixels
Since the announcement of the S5 the prices on the S3 should drop quite a bit

I don't regret my purchase of any Canon camera I've gotten and have never had any type of mechanical errors or problems that were not user related (I once had to send in my Rebel II when I got water in it after shooting near a waterfall all day)

Here's a sample of pix I took last week around my house with the S3

Wow! those are great pictures. Is the S5 out? If not should I wait til its out so I can get the S3 for the absolutely cheapest price possible? haha

lol, yes, the S5 is out I think.

At Circuit City, usually Best Buy, too, they have the S3 on sale every week so it's hardly ever actually $349.99. And there's always Ebay ;).

Yes the S5 is already on the market, and the prices on the S3 keep dropping everyday.

And as another side note, I turned down a really, REALLY great buy on the Canon Rebel XTi to get this S3!! I didn't like the bulk and having to have a variety of lenses on hand to get the best shots with the DSLR. It reminded me of why I rarely use my SLR's anymore.

I've been looking on getting a S3 myself but then I think I settled on a Fuji. Anyway, just wanted to point out that there's tons of S2's for sale on Ebay. I saw some that were brand new and there were some that came with great deals like memory cards, bags and even tri-pods!

Okay sorry, just wanted to point that out. *walks out of thread*

My first camera was a Fuji -
LOVED it -
second camera
FUJI
LOVED it - had it LESS than a YEAR and it started screwing up - I sent it in for fixing - still did it - sent it back - it was going to cost $180 to fix it - I refused b/c I could buy another one for that price or half of one (s2)
bought a 3rd smaller FUJI camera while #2 was still working- love it and it still works - gave it to my parents
I loved Fuji until I ran into that issue with the 2nd camera - Now I'm on Canon and Nikon I suppose.

I've been trying to figure out which camera I want. I've been choosing between an S2 (probably s3, but not sure), a Fuji s700, and Nikon D40. I don't think I'll have enough money for the Nikon, I'll have to save a while.

Anywho, thanks for telling me that! I'll have to look into it a bit more now! See if it has gotten any sort of negative reviews.

Okay, sorry for hijacking the thread!
