I watched "Breed all about" on the animal planet the other day and the featured breed was papillon. I absolutely fell in love!!!
This lady taught her's to herd her sheep!!! It was a trip to watch this little 3 pound dog nip at the heels of these big sheep and they ran from her. The owner said the sheep (which I know from experience are NOT smart animals anyway http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif) don't know the difference from a 3 pound dog to a 40 -50 pound dog.
This lady even when she got up on her horse she would turn and say, "UP" and that little dog would jump up high enough for her to grab her and set her on the horse's rump, which is where she rode when they went horseback riding!!!!!
I thought you would enjoy hearing this!

I saw that same show about a year ago and also fell in love. They are great little dogs. I was going to get one but had to wait for awhile since they are not common in rescues. Before I found one, I found Harley and Reece. I still really want to have one someday and just this morning I was looking at the papillons on petfinder.

I saw that one too, actually we have Tivo and I saw that there was a show about Papillions so I taped it and I just watched it tonight. They are cute dogs, and from what I have observed over the years, they are super little dogs. When I worked at the vet many, many years ago, there was this client who had a beloved lassa oppso (I have no idea how to spell that breed name) and they decided to get a companion for her, so they got a little male papillion. They were not good with training and the little papillon got into some bad habbits (chewing, going to the bathroom in the house, uncontrolable energy) and when they saw me with the little papillion and saw how much I liked the way he looked and how sweet he was they offered to give him to me. I did not know about animal training at that time and I knew my mom would not aprove of me bringing this unruly dog into the house....but the dog was just in need of some training and stimulation. He was bored to death! I kinda wish I had taken him now that I know how smart and easy to train they are....who knows, maybe someone got him who needed him more then I did http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

This reminds me, we haven't heard from Sophie's Daddy in a while, have we?

Hi everyone!

My work schedule has eaten into my ability to get on the forum for a while. Anyway, I had the day off and was stuck doing errands when the show aired and I missed it. I should have recorded it, but I expected to make it home in time.

Of course I agree that they are wonderful dogs! Anyone looking for an easily trainable little dog with plenty of personality should seriously look into the breed. You can get to the rescue site by visiting http://www.papillonclub.org/rescue/ .

By the way, I got some training statistics courtesy of Deb Jones & Copper (her pap) from the PAPILLON-L discussion forum. Considering the relative obscurity of the breed, those of you who have border collies, labs, and goldens should be jealous! By the way, Sophie was one of the CDs.

I was looking through the year 2000 AKC statistics and thought people might
be interested in titles earned by Papillons. People were pretty busy this
past year!

Congratutions to Sophie on her CD title (just in case I missed saying that when she was Dog of the Day). What does she have in store for 2001, a CDX perhaps?

Unfortunately, I think that Sophie's CDX probably won't happen until next spring. I came very close to getting a Dog World award with her in novice (CD) and I think that she is perfectly capable of getting it for Open (CDX) with some extra work. I will have to get my people at work a little more independent so that I can come home less exhausted and start practicing at the pace necessary for competition. Hopefully, by the end of summer I will reach that goal.
