Okay, it was working fine. Then I decided I would change it to work on Windows 98 NT as it was set for Windows 95. I have XP - guess I should have chosen Windows 2000.

ANYway, I have uninstalled and reinstalled it - and it gets STUCK at the same place every time, like 6691 out of 62620, checking WWW Cool something or other. Task Manager shows it as Not Responding...I am using Task Manager to shut it down and it has taken forever.

Any ideas? I am going to uninstall and reinstall...but I don't get it!

Thanks!

Uninstall and reinstall should work. It looks at the system files while looking for bots, so it may be hanging up over that OS issue.

Thanks....should I set it for Windows 2000?

I'll try and see what happens....*shiver*.... :)

Which spybot version do you have?

I downloaded 1.4 from a "mirror" but from the Spybot S&D site itself.

If you can give me a URL to a good download site, I will use that.

Thank you!

ver 1.4 should work fine with XP.

If you are talking about the compatability mode setting in the properties tab on the file, it should be turned off completely.

Okay, I reinstalled it. It seems stuck at the same place...but as Task Manager shows it as still running, I guess I will leave it.

I didn't mess with nuthin' this time!

It's still stuck at the same number, though there is a 'flicker' that keeps going through it...I guess it has a lot of stuff to scan??

*sigh*

Here is a link. It goes to PCWorld downloads page for Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,22262-page,1/description.html)

Any luck?

Spybot sometimes appears to hang like that, depends on what it's scanning.

I've never had it crash on me.

Hi, LH - well I disabled the Compatibility feature, and used the Help menu which said to disable Automation in the Advanced mode (it was already disabled).

WOOHOO!

I just checked and running in Advanced Mode it's at 46,000 and racing upwards!

Not hanging at 6129 any more (can you understand why that number is imprinted on my mind??? )

I won't breathe easy til the scan FINISHES...this was the strangest thing I have gone through.

Thanks everyone!

ETA: 68 items found and removed. YAAY! Thanks everyone.

I guess the key is to run it in Advanced mode...and disable the Compatibility function (right click on icon and you'll find it under Properties).

If you've never run it before there may be a LOT of spyware to remove.
