When I was 18 and had just met Rick (who is now my hubby) I adopted a puppy from the humane society. She was about 3 months old and her name was Alaska and I changed it to Toby. She is a GSD/Lab, this past April 1st she turned 13, I'm telling you this because today I was told she has bone cancer and does not have much time left on earth.
When she was just 10 months old she was hit by a car and broke her leg, 2 years later she tore her ACL and had surgery to repair it. Ugh... not even 3 and she's already got 2 bum legs. Here we are 10 years later and she's still spry! Just last week she caught a rabbit!!
I moved out of the house when Toby was 5, she didn't take the move well, so my parents took her back and she was happy as ever to be back with them and I was happy for her.
My parents only live 15 mins away so I see her quite a bit.
Toby's entire leg started swelling Monday morning and my parents are leaving to go out of town Wednesday morning so my mom got her in to the vet asap.(she stays home, my uncle and grama live next door and take care of her when they are gone)
The vet said it's bone cancer and the tumor is the size of a fist and it on her hip bone and cutting circulation off to her leg, making it swell.
She said no to putting her to sleep right away because, she was in no pain at all. No wimpers out of her when it was touched, nothing. So we just have to wait and see how she does.
I scanned pictures of her (sorry for the cruddy quality)

CRAZY puppy!!! :D

Oh Toby.... 13 years we were blessed to have you in our lives!
I promise I won't let you suffer, I promise you that I'll put aside my own feelings and only think about you when that time comes. I promise I'll let you go be free again.

I love you Toby.

Is it just me or does younger Toby remind anyone else of a boy that is very dear to my heart? I wonder if that's what my boy looked like as a puppy! :)

Angie, Toby is beautiful. I am so sorry that she's been diagnosed with cancer. What a sweet girl she is. She has the most soulful eyes, especially in that last picture.

Yes Kay, puppy pictures of Toby do remind me of Simba!

Thank you all for your kind words.... I can't stop crying....I couldn't bring myself to go see her last night. I'm going today after work.
My parents leave to go out of town tomorrow morning (Wed) so I'll have to check on her or at the least talk to my uncle (who will be keeping a close eye on her) everyday to see if she's gotten worse.
I have to keep telling myself I can't let her suffer... I can't let her be in pain.. I need to let her go. Tobys vet is a dear friend and I hope she'll come to the house when it's Toby's time.
Again, thank you all.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know that dogs get old, but we always hope they won't.

I assume that they don't want to amputate because of her age.

Make the most of every day while you can and you won't have any regrets later. Prayers and hugs to the whole family.

We know you will do the right thing for Toby when the time comes - simply because you love her so much.

Make the most of your time together - she is still the same lovely dog you always knew and needs you more than ever now

I assume that they don't want to amputate because of her age.

Yes, age and because the tumor is high on her hip.

My sister just stopped to visit me at work and she brought her kids, ages 6 and 3. They love Toby so much!
It's going to be so hard on them too. :(

My sister is trying to decided if she is going to tell them ahead of time that Toby is sick and is going to leave to go live with Jesus soon so that they can say a proper goodbye. Or just tell them after Toby is gone.
Toby will be burried on my parents property, so they will have a grave to visit, maybe that would be better... just to tell them once she's gone and they can visit her grave.
:(
Oh this is all so hard.....
Thank you all again for your comforting words.

I went to visit Toby last night and it was not good. :(

She's ready for her trip to the bridge, I'll be calling her vet this morning.

Toby will be a puppy again today at the bridge. Please pray for her safe and painless trip.
She gets to go be with Harley again, my mom's Pom/Poodle that passed a few years ago.

:(
I'll always love you Toby....

Here are some pictures I took last night...
I sat in the grass with her for a long time scratching her ears and giving her extra lovin's.

Oh Angie, my heart is breaking for you. :( This is the hardest part about having a wonderful furry companion. You know Toby appreciates you thinking of her first, no matter how torn up inside you feel. I'm lighting a candle right now here at home, and I'll be thinking of you all. (And if I don't stand over the candle, these tears won't put it out). Wish I was there to give you a big hug, my friend.

Godspeed, Toby, you'll be running & playing on four good legs again soon, sweetheart. Maybe my Rosie will greet you & show you all the best places to dig and to take naps.

:( .. heartbreaking to know it's time for her to go at the same time she was/is enjoying your stritches..

toby, I wish you a godspeed journey and that you'll be all new, happy and painless. 13 years was a good life, I bet.. don't think anyone else better could give you a good home, and, especially up there too! well, and don't forget now, that you're going up there, you have a new job - watching over your parents and dear friend!

thanks for telling me about this thread, glad I could say my good bye before she romps off for colors.. so sorry, (((angie))). let me know if you're still up for tomorrow. I'll understand if you need some time. will be thinking of you and her at 1PM as I'm coming near/by you. :)
