View Full Version : Computer help, please? I need it rather quick in case my internet goes out too.

We had an internet problem not too long ago where Gizzie chewed the cable line. So I moved my computer into my room. It's been absolutely fine for two days. And just a few minutes ago it started this crap.

MSN signed me out. And it gave me this message when I did the troubleshoot. I clicked repair and no help. (see attachment)

And then Yahoo signed me out. And now neither will sign back in.

I'm kind of surprised that it let me onto the actual internet, so maybe it's a glitch in Yahoo or MSN. I'm running a virus scan right now on my C drive.

I'm not getting anything from Yahoo, it just won't sign in.

Someone help, please?

ETA: It looks like it's about to storm here, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Wow, that is weird. I am no pro, but looked at your attachment. The ports aren't connecting...but why it should do this after two days of being ok is beyond me.

Some programs might need updates, but they should pop up and tell you that.

If your virus scan comes back ok, I would shut down and restart.

I'll send you a link to a really good spyware cleaner too - it's free and better than Ad-Aware.

Good luck! Hope someone can help you more.

I have no idea either.

I think I just updated Yahoo AND MSN.

Okay. I already shut down and restarted once and nothing helped.

Thanks! :)

Looks liek the software "virtual ports" (as opposed to physical ports) on your comp are unavailable to the messenger service. Could be a number of things, but spyware/malware is a likely culprit

Ad Aware hasn't detected anything yet, and Spybot is just starting up, so hopefully one of them will catch something..

Ad Aware also gave me a message about the ports being unavailable when it tried to update.

I get that message sometimes, usually for me it always does it if I either have no internet connection, or my internet connection is extremely low on signal. I hope you can get it fixed soon!:( You could try turning the entire computer off and on again if it doesn't work in a while.

Thanks, Kalei.

It's storming here too and the internet usually screws up then. Could that have anything to do with it?

Being that the connection itself is fine and you're just having problems with certain programs, I doubt it.

I was just asking because we had a storm before and I think only MSN went out.

Yeah storms can definately cause connections to go out, but in your case it doesn't seem to be that, otherwise you wouldn't even me able to go onto PT. Sometimes messengers can be jerks. I know mine doesn't always work either. It's annoying.

Ugh. Stupid internet. :(

I wish these scans would hurry. The lights are flickering.

What kind of storm is it? I hope that you'll be okay.

A suggestion before you try to use the messenger programs again:

Unplug the computer from the network connection.

There are some malware programs that can block the functionality of some A/V and spyware removal tools. If you disconnect the network they don't work.

I tried before the scans finished and now MSN works. I haven't tried Yahoo but I bet it does too. Oh well, was time for my scans anyways.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

MSN does that to me sometimes as well. It has nothing to do with our computer when it happens, I'm almost certain it's on MSN's end.

Do you have electrical tape? maybe that would help the cable line. :)

MSN always does that, MSN isn't really good messenger anymore, that's why i don't use it anymore, it always messes up my computer and freezes things up, it's not the computer or internet, its just the certain program. It will be good for some parts but it mostly never lets me on for about a month or two and so i just quit i will go on once in awhile because my mum wants to talk to our cousin in mexico, but i don't like to use it though. Ever since i got the newer version of MSN it starts acting, so maybe going to an older one can help your computer a bit because it will slow down many things.

There is also Trillian, which combines all your messengers into one. The only caution is that Yahoo smilies don't work in them - and I think they have the best!

It worked well for me when I used it.

Yahoo smilies are my favorite though, :p. I'll just deal with having MSN and Yahoo act up. MSN kicked me off this morning but Monica fed it cookies and I told it I loved it and it worked again :D

According to the error message, there seem to be problems with the key ports. Maybe it was really the storm that did some damage somehere? I'd wait awhile and try again. And as long as the internet's still working, it can't be too bad! ;) (for this is always the moment when I start panicking; when my online connection shuts down! LOL)

Good luck!

Kirsten

If its the msn messenger, Try downloading the latest version of Yahoo messenger. It integrates msn messenger into Yahoo messenger.
