View Full Version : A not-so-great night for Nova and Buck

I had to induce vomiting on them a little while ago. My parents and I were making dinner earlier and my dad had just put the corn out on the deck and turned the cooker up to get it to boil. He left the gate to that part of the deck open (not smart) and came inside to get something. Buck was outside and when my dad went back out he was eating a corn cob. He ate about 6 inches total. I heard him yell at Buck so I went out and got him and then when I went in with him Nova went out and my dad fed the part that was left to Nova  I saw him throw it to her and yelled not to feed it to her but by that point it was too late.

I knew corn wasn't digestable so I went and looked up stuff on another board and on the internet and from everything I found people were saying their dog had to have surgery to have it removed. I called the emergency vet and they wanted me to bring him in but I asked if inducing vomiting would do the trick and they said as long as it wasn't swallowed whole, that that would probably work. Buck threw up a chunk and lots of little pieces right away and then did nothing for a while, no bile or anything. I was giving him a little more hydrogen peroxide every now and then but he still didn't throw up again for another 30-45 minutes, and it was just a bunch of bile. I hope the rest is small enough to pass but right now we are at a wait-and-see point. Nova threw up what she ate right away.

So, they aren't feeling so hot right now. I was so, so, so upset and worried when I started reading stuff on the internet about needing surgery because Buck just had obstruction surgery in October. And then I felt like crap making them both throw up. Buck didn't want anything to do with me, he was not happy with me! But I think he'll be alright, I think he chewed up most of it really well, so I've got to dig through his poop for a while to see if it all passes!

It really won't matter if I take him to the vet or not, they will do the same thing I'm doing, which is watching for symptoms of obstruction and eventually searching through his poop. He will go to the vet if he starts showing symptoms, but otherwise, he just needs to rest for now.

I'm sorry to hear about this! I am sure the dogs will be alright though... When I was young and stupid, I fed my dog everything and he lived to be one old chap. I guess maybe corn is a problem for certain dogs and not others... Regardless, I hope they're ok!

Oh poor doggies, poor you! Even when it is for their benefit, I hate making them unhappy!

Praying that it all comes out in the end! :D

Oh poor pups! I'll bet dad won't give them those again!

Give them some hugs and kisses for me. Tell Buck that Kiara & Moo send him extra kisses. ;)

Aww, I remember when Buck had his obstruction surgery. :( I know that horrible sinking feeling when you're just waiting for signs of obstruction. I hope Buck chewed it into little bits and it's just waiting to get pooped out!

Poor doggies. I hope they'll get well without a vet visit. I'm kind of curious. How did you induce vomiting?

Make them drink hydrogen peroxide. It does NOT taste good, so you have to force it down with a syringe.

Thanks everyone, they are doing fine for now. I think everything will be okay :)

I hope they both will be ok! I'm surprised Keva hasn't had an obstruction yet since she eats EVERYTHING.

That reminds me of the horrid night Jamie ate 2lbs of chocolate nut fudge and we induced vomiting... and boy what a mess.

I hope your puppers feel well real soon and I would have a talk with your dad about not feeding them that stuff anytime soon or ever again for that matter :(
