These aren't of pets, but I have some fabulous close ups of some of the wolves I worked with at Wolf Park in my college days! Here is one of my favorite wolf Kiri. He was like the pack "class clown". Quite a goofy personality he had.

Ok, I'll stop. I've got millions more, but here's one last one. This is Vega. When I worked at the park, she was the omega wolf...and was picked on quite alot. It got to the point that the only think keeping her in the pack was the enclosure. She was later removed to her own private 'retirement' space in the back of the park where she was a lot happier!:D She has since passed on. Bless her heart!

Oh I just noticed doggie pictures are here too. Here's my Bella after a trip to the beauty parlor. She really does not care for the bows they put on her as she is a tomboy. They usually last about 2 hrs. and then I find them on the floor somewhere. :rolleyes:

I just had to include another wolf one! This is Alyeska. I was also at wolf park when he was brought in:D Wolf Park 'trades' wolves with other research organizations to keep the blood pools clean. He's a foster littermate to Karin. He's quite a guy, and a very lovable one too. Wolf Park has 'adoption' programs where people can sponser wolves in the pack. Some of the benefits when you do that, is if you visit Wolf Park, they will arrange for you to meet your adopted wolf. However, some of the pack members aren't as 'people tolerant' as others, so whenever that happens, Alyeska acts as a 'stand in' for those wolves.

Here he is looking cute:D

If you don't mind me asking, what's a ferret? I see them a lot a petoftheday, but I've never seen them, and I don't know what kind of animal they are. I've never even heard of them as pets until I came to this site. If you don't mind, please explain and give some websites where I might be able to learn about them. They look cute. Do they bite? Their teeth look very sharp! What do they eat? What do they do? How do they play? I bet they are fun animals but I just want to know more!

Ferrets are great pets. They're a tad high maintenace sometmes but they're worth it. They are a bit tougher to litter box train than cats and they're not always as exact with the box as cats. Ferrets are not rodents, they are related to the weasel. Yes, they do nip when they are kits, but with the right training they grow out of it. The only reason they nip is that is how they play with each other. Ferrets have tough skin so biting and wrestling is a form of playing. They have to be taught that we have much more sensitive skin than they do and that they can't play with us like they would another ferret.

My 4 fuzzies have a 3 level 5 foot tall 3 foot wide cage that they stay in while I'm not home. They get let out the rest of the time in their room. I'm too afraid to let them out all the time because I'm afraid of what they'll get into. They're so skinny and the biggest they get is up to 4lbs. Some weigh more, but most weigh in between 1 to 3 pounds. With a fuzzy that small they can get into tiny spaces. That's why I keep them in their own ferretproof room and they have their cage.

Most ferrets are very inquisitive and would rather play with you and explore than cuddle. They're hysterical to watch play, they jump all around run through their tubes etc.. Oh, and they eat ferret food. Zupreem ferret food, Mazuri, Suerior Choice from theferretstore.com They can also eat high quality kitten food. Ferrets need a diet high in protein and fat.

Other info... contrary to what some misguided people think, ferrets are not wild animals, they have been domesticated for hundreds of years. Yes, they do have an odor, but as long as you feed a proper diet the smell isn't really noticeable.

I could go on and on. A good website to check out to learn about ferrets and their care is Ferret Central (http://www.ferretcentral.org) You can also check out my website for basic ferret care info, see tons of pics of my fuzzies, and learn how they came to live with me. The website is in need of an update. It only has my first 3 fuzzies...within the last month I've adopted Max from the SPCA and took in kitty and I haven't added then to the site yet. My site is... koxka: I haven't introduced Scout to the ferrets yet. Scout is still adjusting to living with me so I didn't want to freak him out. Cats and ferrets can get along well with the right introductions and supervision. Some cats love ferrets and love to play with them, some ignore them and other run away to avoid them at all costs. I think Scout will be of the last sort...he'll run away. Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for the information Chinadoll! I thought they looked like weasles and wild animals too! I guess I was mistaken! They do look like great pets. I've never seen any at Petco, Petsmart, or any other pet store. Where do you get them from? :confused: What kind of odor do they have? Is it similar to the odor skunks give off, or do ferrets always smell? Please enlighten me some more! Thanks! :D

Ferrets do have a slightly musky smell. As long as you change the bedding regularly and feed proper foods, ferrets really don’t have too strong of an odor. It’s not like skunks that spray…the odor comes from glands that produce oil for their coat. Therefore, if you bathe them too much, the skin becomes dried out and the glands work overtime to produce more oil for their coat and you have a smellier ferret. Most ferrets from a petstore come altered and descented. Descenting does not remove all the scent glands, just the ones in the rear. The other scent glands can not be removed. From what I’ve heard from breeders, descenting doesn’t really make a difference in the way they smell, but altering does. I’ve heard there is a big difference between the smell of a whole ferret and one that’s been altered. Most ferrets in petstores are sold altered because of the smell of unaltered ferrets and problem with females that go into heat. If a female ferret goes into heat and is not taken out of heat by the vet or bred to another ferret, she will develop anemia and could very likely die.

Most ferrets are sold from petstores. Petsmart does not carry ferrets because they will not sell an animal if it is illegal in any state. If one store can’t carry it, none of their stores do. Ferrets are illegal in New York City, California, and Hawaii. I think those are the only places where ferrets are illegal. Most Petco’s have ferrets. I really recommend getting a ferret from a shelter. There are so many ferrets that get dumped because people can’t stand the smell(they only smell if you don’t take care of them properly), they didn’t realize how much work they are, it bites(yes, ferrets need to be nip trained and if you try to train the fuzzy by hitting it or flicking it’s nose because you don’t have the patience of course it’s going to show more aggression to you because you are showing aggression to it!) and for many other reasons. www.ferretcentral.org has much more info as well as a list of ferret shelters by state…they may have listing for outside the US, but I’m not sure. Another good resource to check out if you’re interested is Ferrets for Dummies by Kim Schilling. It is a truly awesome book with tons of info. Hope that answers some of your questions. No they are not dangerous. They remain illegal in CA because of misinformation. Those that wish to keep ferrets illegal say that if people let them go, or they escaped that they world form vicious packs and damage native species and agriculture. What they don't understand is that ferrets have been domesticated for hundreds of years and they would not survive very long at all if out in the wild...very few would be able to feed themselves etc.. Actually, many people have ferrets in CA illegally. On these websites are vets in CA that will treat ferrets. Those that own ferrets run the risk that if they are ever reported, the ferret can be seized and either PTS or sent to a shelter in a neighboring state. HTH.
