Very cute!

I don't think I've ever heard of the breed Akita before though, is it relatively new or?

She's a cutie.

And yup an Akita was used to protect the emperor, they were actually companion dogs to samurai's so they date back a few hundred years and they were also used in pit fighting. It's the largest of the Japanese breeds with the Shikoku coming in second and the Shiba Inu coming in third. There is a difference between the Japanese breed and American breed Akita's though and that is that the Japanese ones aren't as heavy boned as the American ones. If you're wondering why I know this it's because I got some of it from a book and the other stuff is because well I have a slight fascination with Japan and other parts of Asia.

She is adorable, thanks for sharing her pictures and
the history.

Akita's were also used for hunting game such
as Bears too.
In America and a handful of other countries
the Akita is still consider ONE Breed and should
be bred to follow the breed standard.
Their is and has been a big heated debate among Akita breeders.
A couple of years ago, the members of the Akita Club of America had the chance to decide the future of the Akita in our
country.
The vote was to either spit the breed as the FCI
countries had, or to remain one Akita.
The members voted not to split the breed,
and in a couple or so years the vote will
come up again for ACA members.

FCI countries, the Akita is the Japanese type and
the American looking type is called the Greater Japanese dog.
They are now considered 2 separate breeds.

I hope your friend enjoys her puppy.
When they mature they can be quiet a handful, if not
properly socialized nor trained. (especially around strange dogs.) : )

Please show me more pictures as she grows up.
Their is nothing cuter than an Akita puppy. :)
