I was wondering, are rocks good for tanks? Quite a long time ago I got some rocks from the ocean and had them in with my goldfish and it seemed to be great, but what if I was to just get a regular rock from the ground and wash it throughely with salt and water, would it still be safe, or could it release too much minerals? Would it make my tank cloudy?

Thanks for the help!

It really depends on what type of rock and what type of fish. I use limestone from the riverbank for my golds, but limestone makes water really hard. Hard water is ok for goldfish, but not so much for neon tetras.

When you find a rock, boil it. Normal landscape rocks are ok, but not lava rocks. If you are unsure of the rock, clean it and put a drop of vinegar on it. If it bubbles, the rock shouldn't be used.

I used a very large rock from outside for my turtle Cave, so all I did was just Boiled it! once I was sure it was clean, I placed it in the tank. The water never got cloudy, and everyone loves it!:)
