On what kind of car did you learn to drive?

I learned how to drive a land yacht! It was a 1965 Ford country squire wagon. It was fun making a three pont turn in that big car during my driver's test! My father learned to drive on a 1925 model T one ton truck.

But once dad realized it was hopeless to teach me stick shift, I learned on my parents 1984 Ninety Eight Oldsmobile. Once I got my license, it was handed down to me and I drove it until 2000!!

I loved that car.

I learned how to drive in a VW beetle Stick shift. Boy! That was fun!!!Even More fun on a hill!Holding the brake until the light turns green , then pushing the clutch in to go forward. WOW!!!Sometimes it was scary!!Now I drive automatics. Much more comfortable to drive. :) :) ;)

I actually had several "learner" cars:

First was a hopped up Chevey with a 4-speed - one of the Seniors on Stage Crew
used to let me try it out in the school lot after shows ... a year before I had my "permit".

The Family Bomb was a '56 or 57 Chevy ... not quite a "muscle-car"!

The High School Drivers Ed ride was the BOMB!! >>>

Each of the local auto dealers "loaned" a new car to the school for a year's use in
the Driver Ed program - taught by real, certified, full-time Teachers back then.
Program was so popular I couldn't get in till summer school, a couple months after I
turned 16. Mom felt sorry I was "delayed", so she took me out for some limited practice.

Class Day 1 ... we had 3 Teacher/Instructors, 9 students, and 3 new cars ...

I wound up with the "Senior" Instructor, who wound up picking the Caddy as his "Ride".

FIRST DAY ... "Anybody had ANY experience behind the wheel?"

I still haden't learned NOT to raise my hand ...

"OK, Phred, pre-trip the car and Hop In!
Head for up-town ... I gotta run an errand!"

I've never been IN something this HUGE ... it feels like a Mack Truck!

"Up-Town" in Mt. Lebanon involved navigating over Trolley Tracks ...
steel railroad tracks embeded in the concrete roadway - which had the nasty habit
of tossing the rubber-tired Caddy Boat just about anywhere but straight!

WHAT an experience that summer was!
But it WAS a good learning experience - being able to handle that BOAT of a car
meant a more "normal-sized" set of wheels handled like a sporty car!

My first actual car was a '89 Ford Escort and that was my introduction to driving stick shifts. I still prefer to drive a manual, bust sadly own two automatics.

Phred, being native to Pittsburgh I've driven on a lot of cobblestone and trolley tracks. Driving on them uually does a number on your front end alignment! Another fun experience is driving on them when they're covered in ice and snow!

AWWW Fred '56 and '57 Chevys were HOT! HOT! HOT! back in *the day.* Even now they still are. My nephew (owns a body shop) has restored a 1957 Chevy, and it is worth some serious money. :) My family had a 56 Chevy convertible (blue and white) and I learned to drive on that. I am smiling here because so many of the cars mentioned in this thread were not even invented when I learned to drive back in 1963! :eek:

I learned to drive in my 1993 Mercury Villager -- MINIVAN!! It was awesome, I loved that beast of a car.

The first manual I drove was my dad's 1997 Mercury Tracer. We still have it, and I still continue to stall it occassionally.

Now I have two automatics, (along with my dad's Tracer and my mom's Sable), which are a 2005 Chevy Cavalier and a 2002 Ford F-150. I love my car AND my truck. :D

I learned to drive in a 1982 Pontiac Sunbird. It had the gear shift on the floor (not on the steering column like most cars did 25 years ago), and it didn't have a rear view mirror on the passenger side. To this day I check over my shoulders before I change lanes because I never got comfortable with a passenger side rear view mirror.

My first car was a 1979 Dodge Omni, grey with AM radio and a four speed manual transmission. The first car I bought was a 1987 Toyota Tercel hatchback, which had a manual transmission but also air conditioning and AM, FM, cassette. The air conditioning never worked well - I used to tell passengers we could either get where we're supposed to be going, or we can be cool, but not both. Since then I've had two cars, both with automatic transmissions. My best friend from high school has a Ford Mustang with a 5-speed manual that I drive every chance I get. My dream car is a Volvo because they consistently score so high on safety tests.

I learned to drive on a standard 1999 Pontiac Sunfire GT. And let me tell you it was not fun trying to learn a standard with my dad teaching me. My Dad took me out on the road in the family car, a 1965 Buick LaSabre`

I can still remember turning the key while saying,"I'm nervous", to which he replied, You're nervous?? :D It was an Automatic, boosting a Wild Cat Engine!!

Later on, I drove an older VW Beetle~ So Chica, I can relate to stopping at an intersection atop a steep hill and hoping that I can maintain the flow of traffic when the light turns green!!!! :D That car was sooooo much FUN to drive!!!

It was white, huge, in perfect condition and I loved it. When I went off to college, it became MY car. I kept it until we had to move to Germany in 1988 and it was still beautiful at 25 years old. Oh, and her name was Bessie Mae :D

Gosh, David, you are bringing back memories! My sister's first car was a green Ford wagon! It was my dad's old company car and he bought it for $1000 and gave it to her. She ended up with the Chevrolet, though, when he bought a new car for my mom. My dad was a toughie and gave both us $1000 towards a car when we were seniors in college. She took the $1000 car. I took the $1000 gift and paid him back the rest, after I graduated, for a 1975 Dodge Omni that he bought for me when I was working an internship after my junior year in college.

I don't remember how bad the gas mileage was on our station wagons, but I'm sure it was no worse than putting gas in our Ford Expedition that we have now. Thank goodness that thing stays parked most of the time these days. We'd sell it if we could, but there is no market for a 2002 gas guzzler like it is, right now. My husband paid $500 for a Ford Ranger pickup truck last year and he drives it all of the time these days. He loves it! :)

A red Ford Falcon, not sure about the age. 1970 when I got my license so the car was probably 1967-1968.
It was my mom's car. I got to drive it to school on occassion when she wasnt using it for the day. Mostly, I rode the yellow school bus. I loved it when my best girlfriend got her own car. :)
