Random thread. Just curious what everybody lived near. Like historic sites, colleges, blah..

Colleges

ETSU (East TN State University) is right down the road from my house.

UT (University of TN) Is only 2 hours away from me, so not too far.

VT (Virginia Tech) Not sure the exact distance, but I know it's rather close.

Historic Sites

Andrew Johnson Birthplace (Greenville, TN)

Boones Creek, TN I think it has something to do with Daniel Boone...

Other

Appalachian Mtns. Guess they kind of count, right?

That's all I can think of right now, but if I remember others, I'll be back.

Just about everything! Our area is rife with both history and colleges.

We live next to Boston, site of the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, the Battle of Bunker Hill, etc. "Old Ironsides" - a.k.a. the USS Constitution is anchored nearby in Boston Harbor. Lexington and Concord (the reason we celebrate Patriot's Day and "the shot heard 'round the world") are nearby, as is Walden Pond (of Thoreau and the Existentialists fame). Mt. Auburn cemetary - on the same street as my church - is the burial-place of countless famous Americans, including Winslow Homer, Julia Ward Howe and Isabella Stewart Gardner, whose home became a world-renowned museum which is also nearby. And the colleges around here include Harvard, Boston University, Boston College, Bentley, Brandeis, Regis, Wellesley, Tufts, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Northeastern, Wentworth, and many, many, many more, large and small, including my alma mater Massachusetts College of Art.

We have the atlantic vet collage. It's pretty good. We get a lot of people who travel to take their sick pets there.

We also have Anne of Green Gables, The Confed Bridge, stuff...I don't know lol

Hmm.. in all honesty, I don't know! =D

Well, for collages, ASU(Arkansas State University) is pretty close to us... my sister attends it.

Turpentine Creek (http://www.turpentinecreek.org/NewSite/) - A big cat reserve.. thing. They take great care of their animals. I've been there a time or two and its really nice. =]

Branson is pretty close to us, aswell. For those who aren't familiar, its a big tourist place, basically. Has Silver Dollar City and such. Haven't been there in years, but used to go every year as a little kid. I have alot of memories there.

Hmm.. Nothing really historical about that, but its something!

edit/ the later two are in MO. I live on the border, so both MO & AR things are pretty close to me. Just wanted to make that clear^^.

UC Davis is about a half hour away, it is the number one rated vet school in the country and it is where my daughter plans to go to school. Lake Tahoe is about an hour and a half away.

I really like it here because it is a few hours from the ocean and a few hours from the mountains.

Pittsburgh is the home of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University. Both campuses are about 5 minutes from where I live. Also, in downtown Pittsburgh is Point State Park where you can see two rivers join to form the Ohio river. Also in the park is the remanents of Fort Pitt built in 1759. One blockhouse sitll stands at the site.

Near? I live IN San Francisco - can't get any closer than that to the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, the Cliff House, North Beach, San Francisco Opera House, all the wonderful old Victorian houses - I live in one. Cable cars are public transportation, although the tourists don't think so.

Ehh I think I should get the award for this place. I live right next to the Indiana State Prison, woo hoo.

But other than that I'm near Lake Michigan, The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Mt. Baldy, The Lighthouse Mall, and I'm about 45 min from Chicago.

Across the river from historic Philadelphia (I really do love the historic buildings and museums in Center City), and just a little over three hours from Washington DC.
Karen, I have always wanted to go to Boston. Every year I think this is the year. There is so much I would love to see in your area.

Well, I wouldn't come now - unless you're a good swimmer - it is STILL raining, but when you make it up this way, let me know. Boston is a lovely city to visit, really, as it's very small, and things are close to each other. And I didn't even list things like the New England Aquarium, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Science Museum, etc!

That goes for anyone coming to Boston - we'd love to meet up with you!

Stop, you are killing me, lol. :D One of the reasons I haven't gotten there is because I really do not want to go by myself, and all of my friends would rather spend their vacations at the beach or on cruises or in Mexico (I guess they would rather go somewhere warm). There is nothing wrong with any of those things, it just means I can't get them to go to Boston with me.

We have the Rocky Mountains on our doorstep, which in my opinion greatly outweighs anything mere men could create. :D It takes about 30 minutes from our house to get into the mountains, and about 2 hours to Rocky Mountain National Park, which is stunningly beautiful.

In Denver, we've got lots to do, lots of colleges, but there's not a lot of evidence of history- the oldest standing building in Denver is only from the 1800's. I should go to the Colorado history museum one of these days though. Outside of the metro area there's lots of "old western" type towns. I'm sure most of it is inauthentic though. I thought Cripple Creek would be interesting till we went and found it just to be one casino after another.

OMG, Wombat is out of the DOGHOUSE??? Mark the calendar, gold star the date!

Right here in East Providence, (the city where I live), we have an historic carousel!

Built in 1895 by Charles I.D. Looff, one of the earliest and foremost carousel designers. The Crescent Park Carousel is Nationally recognized as a true masterpiece of wood sculpture. Originally built as a showcase for prospective buyers, it is the largest and most elaborate of looff's works. The Carousel contains 62 beautifully hand carved figures and four fanciful chariots. Overall richness of effect was Looff's trademark and the Crescent Park Carousel gives full interpretation to that spirit.

Here are some photos:
http://www.crescentparkcarousel.com/photographs/Carousel/index.htm

Because it was the showcase, it has one of everything and oh my they are gorgeous. Two years ago, they closed for the entire year and did a major restoration. Better than ever! The same family has been taking care of the mechanics and paint and such for over 25 YEARS! This is a labor of love!

It is 75 cents for a ride, and they still have the gizmo with the rings. As you go around you grab a ring. If you get the brass one, you get a free ride! We go at least once every summer.

Well, it's plenty warm in the summer here! And I didn't even mention the Atlantic Ocean - and whale watching! Stellwagen Bank is a national Marine Sanctuary just 25 miles east of Boston, their website is http://stellwagen.noaa.gov/

Armidale is in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia. It's an educational centre that services the educational needs of country kids and overseas studnets.....we have many private schools here, and the University of New England. Most students board at their respective colleges, so when school holidays and semester breaks come along, the city sort of empties a bit. The architecture here sort of follows along the lines of VERY English, so there are lots of those ivy covered Tudor style buildings around, and lots of older style Aussie colonial buildings.....a very historic city, and a very beautiful place to live.

Hey, animal_rescue! I graduated from Valparaiso ... I have many happy memories of the Dunes and Mount Baldy.

Well... 3 towns away from mine (Downers Grove, IL) is a town with a bunch of Sears Modern Homes, which were built from kits in the 1920s and 30s. I have a friend who lives in one - it's tiny, but it has heaps of character and people coming by to see it / take pictures of it.

3 towns away from mine in the opposite direction (Berwyn) is the world's largest laundromat (honest!), which has solar panels on the roof to heat the water, and a rather odd-looking sculpture that was featured in the original "Wayne's World"...

Boston & East Providence, here I come! (Literally)
We'll be residents of RI about 6 weeks from now, and I am a carousel enthusiast! Fall River MA houses the carousel from my youth - I think it's mostly Philidelphia Toboggan Co. figures, if I recall, but I could be wrong. Those pics you posted are gorgeous, Sandra! I will definitely have to come up & see you! Karen, I'd love to go to "all of the above." My childhood memories are all of the famous historical places we visited on vacations (Plymouth, Salem, New Bedford, etc.), but I'd sure like to see more.
As for now, University of Findlay is down the road. But in RI we'll be part of the community at the Naval Base, which includes NAPS and the War College.

Not much historical stuff around here since Az is a fairly new state (1912).

Our tourist attractions are primarily the landscape; The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Sonoran Desert, Painted Desert, Sunset Crater National Monument, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, Canyon De Shelly, and the Petrified Forest.

The few historical sites are the old Yuma prison and quite a number of old Trading posts sprinkled around these sites.

The universities are Arizona State University ASU
and Northern Arizona University NAU

And of course we mustn't forget the rattlesnakes.

I lived in Puxsutawney, where groundhog Phil lives. Talk about a strange place - they dedicate their lives to that groundhog and one day a year

Reading as a town was originally hunting grounds for William Penn and his wealthy friends. The shopping center across the street has a historical marker sign telling us it was the site of a hotel owned by him.

Don't let the area around Ohio State be your biggest impression of Columbus. They have a good Art Museum, fabulous Main Library (check it out), and several specialty museums. Schools also include Columbus State, and the Columbus College of Art & Design, a very good art school. Downtown also has German Village, and the High St. Gallery strip (very hip).
The inner city & area surrounding campus are pretty run down, but there are sooo many really lovely places around the Columbus area out towards the suburbs like Grandview, Bexley (the Franklin Conservatory is gorgeous), Worthington (lived there for 5 years), Dublin, and Delaware. Interesting thread! Well I live about an hour from Manchester so there's a lot of sights there, such as the Manchester eye, Old Trafford (woo!), lots of museums and Manchester Uni. The Sears Tower - is it still the tallest building in the world?

Not really. There are 4 categories for tallest building and it holds one. I think it's tallest floor or something. The other categories are tallest overall, tallest outdoor roof, and tallest indoor celing, I believe.
