They keep revising the number, maybe 21 dead, ten injured ... I have emailed Ceph, the Pet Talk member who attends Virginia Tech, and I'll let you all know if and when she responds.

I hope Ceph is okay!

From what my mom told me, the sicko was looking for his girlfriend. He shot 31 people and injured 29. This is so sick, I feel terrible the students families. Barley any details yet, on this case.

I hope the sicko rots in hell!

This is indeed horrible. It is absolutely senseless. Fox News is saying 32 dead, and I believe around 29 wounded with at least 2 in critical condition.

What I don't understand is that they didn't send an email out to students until 2 hours after the first shooting. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

Karen
04-16-2007, 03:27 PM
Yes, Ceph just asks that everyone pray for those who were killed and injured. I will add and their friends and families as well.

Yes, I was in line at the Post Office when I heard people talking about this. I still haven't had a chance to turn the news on yet (will do so now). One of my co-workers took off a few days last week to visit three colleges in Virginia with her son. :( And that was the first thing I thought of. Can you even imagine sending your child off to college and getting a call like this. I am almost in tears now. Prayers for the family and friends of those killed, and for the recovery of those that were injured. :(

It is absolutely horrific and senseless and deeply saddening. What I fail to comprehend (as another poster already said) is how the university thought sending out e-mails two hours after the initial murders would be of any help. Reports say the two incidents are not connected, but does that make the murders any less significant because it was 2 people and not 30-something? How sad :(

This tragedy is all over the news up here too. Cate....I'm struggling for words and really want to come up with something encouraging or at least comforting to say, but like the others, I'm trying to understand this whole situation. The media is saying that there is no motive. What could possibly prompt someone to carry out this senseless act???

Prayers going out to all concerned and especially to you Cate. RIP Matt! Another young life taken too soon. What is this world coming to?

Ceph.... I am amazed that you were even able to sit down and write such a well thought out post. You are a much stronger person that I suspect I could be at such a time. It seems impossible now but you will heal..... those students, those families and those friends will be forever changed by this but they will find a way to go on. I cannot imagine the pain this has caused.

Hind sight is 20/20 and a lot of people want to place blame... but there is no blame to be placed except for the person that did this. Like I said to you earlier.... it is easy to talk about the right thing to do when you are not the one that has to do it. There is nothing that could have prevented this horrible tragedy.... this.... evil man had a need to fulfill and no amount of planning, warning, or laws could have prevented this monster from doing what he came to do. It is just unfortunate that he had to take the lives of so many innocent people just because he didn't get his way in life.

I am continuing to pray for you and for everyone in that community. This is definately a time to be with those you love, tell them you love them, hold hands, hug and just be together. You all need each other right now. I lit all my candles last night for all of you.... I will do so again tonight. It is just a small gesture but it is the best I can do right now.... I wish I could help some other way. But just know that my family and I are thinking of you all and praying for you. I'm so sorry

04/17/2007

On April 17, 2007 at approximately 11:25 AM, a staff member at the RIT Inn & Conference Center (right off NTID campus) reportedly heard a suspicious sound coming from inside a student’s room. The alert staff member contacted RIT Public Safety.

RIT Public Safety and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the room, where a student admitted possessing two unloaded illegal firearms that he said he had just assembled. No live ammunition was found in the guns, however the Sheriff’s Office found ammunition inside the student’s parked vehicle. The student was suspended from the university and the Sheriff’s Office investigation continues.

Ceph, thank you for sharing. Through you we can begin to feel the depth of the loss. I believe Matthew LePorte was from New Jersey. I heard this morning that another NJ student (from Mullica Hill, not far from me) is in critical condition after being shot in the face. We need to keep those survivors in prayer as well. They have, in many cases, a long road ahead of them both physically and emotionally.

My husband and I were just saying this morning that some of the media coverage is just awful. I won't mention any names of the people on these programs, but some of the questions that are being asked of the families like "how do you feel?" "what do you remember most about your loved one?" just seem so shallow. I wish they would let these people have some privacy. :(

Why!? I wish the killer was alive and the police could torture him FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then we can see how he likes it

KittyGurl, the man/boy who did that was clearly mentally ill. It is quite likely that his life was already torture to him. That does in no way excuse what he did, but no good would come from trying to exact "revenge" on him.

The best way to deal with this is to support the survivors, the families and loved ones of those killed, and the entire Virginia Tech Community. One cannot fight darkness with darkness, but it can be conquered with light.

Catty1
04-18-2007, 11:30 PM
Kittygurl - if we could do that, we would be the same as him.

Revenge is the most natural thing in the world - but as a minister at the memorial said, we have to turn from the 'seductiveness' of revenge.

Loving and supporting, however we can, shows we know better, and do not go down to that dark level.

I wonder how his parents are, among all the others? They are innocents who have also lost.

Prayers to all.

I wonder how his parents are, among all the others? They are innocents who have also lost.

I have thought of his parents several times through all of this. How will they ever go on? They have suffered tremendous shame as well as loss. I wasn't aware until I saw on TV yesterday that they were not able to be advised of the school's concerns regarding his writings, etc. because of *confidentiality.* I feel that is something that must be changed. Maybe they could have helped. :(

I wonder how his parents are, among all the others? They are innocents who have also lost.

Prayers to all.

I hope they are not forgotten in people's prayers

Thank you for the photos and your writings that truly show the beauty of the indomitable human spirit.

Countrywolf, your friend and the victim's family will also be in my prayers.

All remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I do too, Catty1. I saw on Anderson Cooper's show last night that some of the writing he had done for his course work rattled his professor so much that she showed it to the University police. They could not do anything about it because no direct threats were made. They also couldn't show it to the health service because of confidentiality. Anderson Cooper was saying that these events may focus national attention on issues of gun control again. But I hope something is done to protect potential victims when it's identified that there is risk of a crime, or a person is having serious mental health issues that jeopardize people's safety (that person's or others). At some point the safety of others comes up against an individual's right to privacy and that's not an easy place to be.

In Florida they have something called the Baker Act, if a person is deemed by a family member, teacher ,clergy, friend etc. To pose a threat to themselves or others they can be involuntarily committed for 72 hours while Mental health proffessionals from several fields attempt to assess the risk and if it is actual or simply being faked for whatever reason.

I know there are a few other states that have similar Acts, it is time we have that availability in all states.

And before anyone goes off on a phone call can lock up your annoying little brother etc. You do have to provide clear and cincise statements, that would make a reasonable person fear for their health and/or safety or that of the person in question.

I just ordered a VA tech sweatshirt, to show support. I think everyone around America should to show support for those who were lost in this tragic fit of rage.

I heard on the news today that funeral services have begun to be held for the Virginia Tech victims. That must be so difficult for their families.
