View Full Version : Okay guys, K9Soul and Raven need our help

Vela

Raven's diagnosis is not good, she will need either radiation or surgery or perhaps both, it is still unknown exactly what treatment will be undertaken at this time; however, no matter it will still be very costly as it will need to be done at the Univeristy.

I know Jessica would never ask, and normally neither would I, and I know she has, behind the scenes, contributed many times to those in need. Well now they are in need.

I would like to set up some sort of "help" with donations from myself and others here who would be willing to donate to Raven's Survival Fund. This is no joke, this is very serious, and she needs this treatment.

I realize you don't know me personally, and until we know which hospital the surgery will be set up at, we cannot make arrangements for direct payments. So I don't expect anyone to send me anything if they don't feel comfortable doing it and would rather wait until an account can be set up at the hospital, I completely understand.

I will however, give my personal information to anyone who PMs me requesting a way to donate. I will give out my personal home address and/or my Paypal address. I will incur whatever paypal fees come with any donations out of my own pocket. Those who wish to wait until there is a hospital account set up please feel free to PM me with an amount you'd like to donate so I can try to keep a tally going.

I'm asking now because Jessica needs to have some peace of mind that everything will work out, and she can schedule and have whatever needs done done, without having to worry if she can pay for it. ANY of us would be in a bind if this happened to us.

Those who can't donate funds, donations of prayers and support for Jessica and Raven gladly accepted just as thankfully.

UPDATE ON DONATIONS:

As of today, via paypal and personal donations, there is $876.81 in Raven's fund, not counting everything people are sending in the mail. Thank you everyone, let's keep it up and get Raven the help she needs! (There are cents added on because pounds doesn't translate straight across =))

Yes I'm keeping track of who donates how much and a list will be sent to Jessica when they all arrive.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. And I'll want to make more than one payment, too. I'm willing to do anything to help that sweet dog live. She's brought Jess so much happiness. If we have to make a miracle happen, we will.

I have one more paycheck before leaving for my Utah trip. I will set aside as much as I can for Raven and Jess. Both of them mean so much to me. :( I am not sure how much I will be able to donate so I will get back to you later on that.

I know we can help Jess and Raven, Pet Talk!

Also, if PT cannot help with all of the fees, maybe we can try contacting IMOM when a price is set?

Vela

Kay ANY little bit helps, and I mean that. No donation is too small and I know everyone is tight on money, but I am thankful for every bit anyone is willing to help with. Every penny donated goes to Raven's medical bills.

I know PT has it in them to help Raven and Jessica. Despite the few occasional petty arguments, when there is trouble eveyrone pulls together, it's what makes it such a nice place!

I SO wish I can help, I feel like crying for Raven and Jess. My parents wouldn't let me though, I'm sorry and I do feel terrible about it. If I was allowed, or if I was older I would send money in a heartbeat. I am still going to pray for them, and wish you luck with the donations. I know Jess would do the same for anyone else.

Thank you all for caring enough to help, time is not important, if you can't donate right now, anytime you can is welcome.

I'll definitely donate to help Jessica and Raven. I can send an e-check through Paypal now, or I can give you a check when I see you in May. I've had my share of very expensive vet bills but nothing like this, and I know PT would be there for me too if I did. I just want sweet Raven to be ok, I know she's brought such joy into Jess's life and to Pet Talk.

Jess, I don't know if you're reading this, but in addition to the contributions that Pet Talkers may send, I think it would be advantageous for you to go to www.imom.org, as someone mentioned before, and apply for assistance through them. I have had several people I know who were able to get sponsors from IMOM. And if you did get set up with them, people can contribute directly to Raven's care through IMOM and have a tax deductible (not that any of us are worried about that, right now) contribution.

You and Raven are in my prayers. Like Gini, as soon as there is an organization or veterinary hospital to send the contributions to, I would love to help. Scott and I know the hardship of huge vet bills, for sure. Lilly's bill, alone, was $2000, and I imagine it would have been double that, or more, with any other veterinarian.

You are a good "mom" and a good friend.

I'm sure she will contact them as soon as she can gather her thoughts. It's been quite a shock, as I'm sure you can understand. If she is able to get on with them and people donate through there I don't care, anything anyone is able to contribute, in whatever way, is welcomed and I am grateful for.

Thank you all for the help and prayers. Raven WILL be okay.

Oh wow ... somehow I have missed all the threads concerning Raven. I had no idea she had cancer :( I am tight on money at the moment because I had to take off a lot of time from work when my Nana passed away and then to get caught up on school, but I will see if I can spare any. Thank you for doing this.

I feel so horrible. My father's business hasn't been doing well for the past few years and getting Ivy was a huge splurge :( I really want to help, but I'm afraid my contribution will be very minute. I hope it helps, anyways. Vela, can you PM me with your home address?

Vela
04-12-2007, 10:04 PM
Please I don't want anyone to feel guilty or bad that they aren't helping "enough". Every penny helps, every prayer helps, every good thought sent their way helps. All of it comes from the heart and I appreciate each and every one of you for your contributions in all aspects, money, prayers, whatever it may be. I know Jessica does too.

By the way, if donations exceed the cost (I highly doubt it, but you guys are pretty awesome so I don't discount anything!) any remaining funds would be donated in the name of PT to another dog/animal in need in a rescue or shelter.

Hope that came out right, I'm pretty tired, but I hope you get the gist.

I've not been around much this week and am so shocked to hear the outcome of Raven's tests. This must have been such a shock to Jess.

PT always seems to come through in tough times and I know this time is no different. As always I'm more than happy to donate and offer prayers.

If you'll pm me your address I'll send a check asap.

There exists the Animal Clinical Investigation group. This private Vet company conducts research on cutting edge research in dogs diagnosed as having cancer. Reading between the lines a large Pharma company in need of pre-human trials in animals for an experimental drug will contract with ACI to do the studies.

The positives:

1.They provide the drug being tested for free. Any diagnostics (e.g. chest Xrays, bloodwork) to monitor the course the disease and effectiveness of the drug are provided free.

2. If the drug is not effective they will offer follow up treatment for free. This is bleeding edge stuff in current research, mostly involving anti-angiogenesis drugs, which is a hot topic in human oncology. Very different side effects (mild) than traditional Chemo drugs.

The negatives:

1. Being an experimental drug, it may not be effective. In order to have a controlled study they will not allow other treatments while in the study. Thus the outcome might be worse than the conventional radiation therapy.

2. You must live in driving distance of their area, or one of their regional partners helping them conduct the study. This is necessary in order to run the periodic diagnostics. Unless your Vet is already one of their partners, they would be off the case.

3. A given study may or may not still be open. You'd need to send Email to them to check. They are very responsive to Email, and will answer your questions.

They list a generalized sarcoma study as open.

I sent you a PM, and most likely she is going to the University of Minnesota. I will post more hospital information, schedule, exact procedures, etc, when I have more information. Still waiting for the specifics from her vet, who is in contact with the Univeristy, discussing the best options, etc. Regardless it's going to be expensive, and she does not qualify at this time for any of the grants etc.

Dear Pet Talkers,

I have witnessed in the past what a caring and wonderful community of people this is, but there is just no way to realize the incredible impact of it until you are the one being helped. I feel so overwhelmed it is very difficult to try to come up with adequate words. This situation has been such a shock to me, a nightmare. Who in the world thinks that their puppy might develop malignant cancer before they are a year old? And oral cancers being some of the most aggressive.

I had another shock when I saw this thread. Vela, my dear friend who has gone through the emotional roller coaster with me, from the time I adopted my little imp until now when we are fighting for her life, has been there every step of the way. I could not have hoped for a truer friend. And I feel the same for all of you, all who have offered support, prayers, offers of help. Every last shred of it will never, ever be forgotten by me.

I still do not know as much as I would like, but Raven is going in Monday to see a specialist who has done many of these types of surgeries. He will be assessing her and deciding how radical and how much will be necessary, whether some of the bone needs to be taken and so on. Right now the next step all depends on his assessment, but the specialist (Dr. Koblik) will probably be doing the surgery. I am not sure if he would take her to his clinic or how that works yet. I have to drop her off Monday morning at my vet's office and he will be calling me with Dr. Koblik's recommendations when he sees her, and a more ballpark idea of what cost is involved. The less they have to deal with going into the jawbone, the less cost will hopefully be involved.

I just know my girl is going to beat this. We have a purpose together, she and I. I am grateful beyond any ability to express through words to all of you. Thank you from Raven and I, from the bottom of our hearts.

I'm still overwhelmed by this. And I don't want a single person to feel bad about if they can't send, or what they can send, if there is any difficulty going on, or even if you simply don't feel comfortable with it, I want you to be sure and know I understand and do NOT, not in the very least, expect it. In fact I would sincerely request you keep what you have if that is the case, especially if you are low yourself! I know many folks have already generously given and it makes me feel incredible that they would do that, even a little anxious! I'm not one to ever ask for help in such a way. Until I know for sure what the end cost is going to be, please do not worry about donating even more too at later dates. I promise that if it is even higher than I had imagined and I'm in trouble, I will say something (hard as that is!) I will do that, thanks to a little reminder Slick gave me ;). Thank you all.

In Paypal, you can choose currency type. So you'd pick USD for United States Dollar. Then, depending on how your husband has his account set up, it'll either withdraw funds from a credit card or checking account and will do the conversion for you. So say you donated $20 USD, it will deduct about $23 Canadian from your account. :)

I'm unsure if you'd be charged a fee.

I posted an update with more details here: http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?t=124426&page=15&pp=15

Raven is scheduled for surgery on Friday. The surgeon was optimistic and does not feel radiation will be necessary, and that he believes he can get it with a bit of bone removal, possibly some of the teeth and that area the cancer is in.

Fortunately this also means the cost involved will not be as great as I had first feared. Originally they were talking about a partial jaw removal and reforming of the jaw using a rib bone, which would have been at least 4 grand and she'd had had to go to the U of M. As it stands right now, when all is said and done it should be under or up to around 1k total. I am not sure what people have sent but I believe you all have donated a good chunk of that at least, so it does not look I am going to be hit so hard with this. After having to pay out taxes and Raven's last surgery etc., I was completely out of any emergency funds, so you all have helped me more than you can know.

But as it stands I don't think there will be need for repeat donations or funding set up, although I won't know for sure until everything is done. If we do happen to have any extra left over I will send it on to an organization like IMOM. Thank you again, and please keep those prayers coming, especially Friday. The PT community is a true blessing.

This is great news! With the donations so far and those discussed as being mailed or will be mailed, we should be able to really take a chunk out of that number. You guys are so awesome, I can't thank you enough for being willing to step up and help save Raven. All donations will be kept track of in the first post of this page and I will notify each of you by PM when I receive your donation so you know it arrived, and as Jessica said, any funds left over, if there are any, will be donated to help others in need.

I can't thank you enough for all you have done.

I'm a Pay Pal newbie. So ... do I need a credit card to send money to Vela? Do I pay a fee to open an account, or to send funds? Or, does Vela pay a fee to receive the funds I send? Do you have to wait for the payment to clear, like you would with a check? Vela, I hope the funds are increasing. If the veterinary medical center requires payment at the time of service, will they accept a partial payment for the time being?

I've been away for a while so was not aware that Raven was going for surgery. I would like to send a donation via snail mail, if it's not too late.

I've very embarrassed that I have not sent mine in yet and even more embarrassed that it will be a small amount. :o :o I really am strapped for money right now but never too broke to donate to the cause. I still have to go to the bank to get some american money. Work has been very busy and I've been eating my lunch and working at the same time. Will try to do that tomorrow. Again, so sorry....

Jess, you and Raven will be in my prayers tonight, tomorrow and always. If I can beat cancer, so can Raven.

Slick you have nothing to be embarassed about! It is the love and support this community has shown in this time of need that is worth more than anything else. Everything everyone has done has come from the heart and amount is not important! The prayers and good wishes of everyone here has had me in tears over this several times already, and it doesn't cease to amaze me at what some will do to help others they don't truly "know".

Prayers, good thoughts, or positive energy are just as important as anything else.

Raven is HOME! Update here: http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?p=1801121#post1801121

The total for everything, surgery, hospitalization, antibiotics, pain medicine, etc. came to $1079. You guys really have completely covered it. I just again, feel too overwhelmed for words. I truly should be fine (and won't have to be delinquent on my bills next month!) now, thanks to this beautiful, powerful community. They do not charge for rechecks so unless anything else needs to be done, hopefully NOT, things from a financial standpoint are going to work out more than I ever could have thought they would. It seems so inadequate but all I can say is Thank You Pet Talkers, me and mine thank you with all our hearts. I will never forget!
