Charter 10 Meg with VOIP and cable.
Wireless routers in the house for the other 4 comps from the main hub and seperate 10 meg for the mainframe server.

Those darn gnomes ... i need to get mine to bring my Packets faster, my intarweb has been a little slow as of late ;)


Note: Just to clairify the GnomeTheory, a packet in regards to Internet terms is a bundle of data thats formatted and transmitted across the net. The GnomeTheory is that Gnomes run the internet, and take my data packets one by one from the Intarweb right to my computer.

I have DSL light but there are days it runs like dial up or completely stops! All it has to do is rain and my internet STOPS.. I am so aggervated with it that I am thinking about getting cable but I really don't want cable.. Everytime they come out to connect or disconnect someone else close to me, they screw mine up and then it takes them a week to 10 days to get back out here to fix it.

We have cable. We tried using wireless lan for all the computers, but it never worked right. Something bizarre about this old, old house maybe. So now they are all run on CAT5 cable. We have endless problems with our cable. But the only alternative out here in the boonies is dial-up and that was worse. :rolleyes:

Cable but it doesn't seem any faster than the DSL was (only more expensive :rolleyes: ) The cable guy said it was because most computers aren't fast enough to keep up with the speeds.... so then its basically useless, right? :rolleyes:

The speed of a cable internet connection fluctuates greatly.

They run common lines to many houses (The hocks on the street are hubs, rather than discrete line connections), and your connection speed is determined by how many people are currently using the service and how much they are downloading.

DSL, on the other hand, is a dedicated line.

I have the slow old Dial up. From where I live, I can't get anything else yet. Not far from where I live, they have DSL. I'll be glad when we get it here.

We enjoyed and supported our cable modem for a long time. Then it really got screwed up, aand after many, many months of going through it, we finally switched to DSL. We also have a wireless network in our home. Unfortunately, our desktop computers (two of them) have died on us!!!!! :( I am on my husband's laptop, right now. The DSL has been pretty good. It is a 3.0 connection, but plenty fast for what we need.

I'm not sure exactly what it is (as far as DSL or anything) but I know we have Roadrunner. However, we also get our Cable TV from the same line, or almost same line. I'm not too internet savvy, if you can tell. :p

Roadrunner is cable. We have Optimum Online, and were one of the first to get it in our area, cashing in on a promo 4 years ago.

True to a point, because that is Jaspers line of work(he writes the programs that make AT&T phone lines and their not so great lightspeed service) our cable modem(through Charter communications<not AT&T) is a dedicated line so there is never a fluctuation with the bandwith, it depends on the service you are using now, and what you are requesting. Charter still offers, the group hubs that are the norm, but you can (and I would reccommend it if you plan on being in the same house for a while) get dedicated service. Without it there would be no way for him to have the separate mainframe and server hub :)

I have a Flintstone-like MSN dial up on my web tv system. The only thing nice about it is that I can sit on the couch with my wireless keyboard and watch the internet on my regular 20" tv set. Is anyone else familiar with web tv?
