From a vet
I am making this a new topic as I feel everyone should know.
I Just got this from a vet I email a lot.
Mods feel fre to combine with my other post if you wish.
Hello, G
Re: It even gets worse..
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
And now the supposed " Global Leader in Pet Nutrition", Hills is
recalling a prescription veterinary diet.
It is a diet used for weight loss and diabetes in cats.
At my practice we only special order in Hills prescription diets,
and we have no current clients feeding it ( fortunately).
Here is the details of the expanded recall...
Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc.Recalls Single Product,
Prescription Diet(TM) m/d(TM) Feline Dry Food, Only Product Containing Wheat Gluten.
Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet
m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary
action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for
this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to
Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples
show the presence of a small amount of melamine.
Recalled products U.S. & Canada UPC* Size
Prescription Diet(TM) m/d(TM) Feline dry food 52742 42770 4 lb. bag
Prescription Diet(TM) m/d(TM) Feline dry food 52742 42790 10 lb. bag
Why is a company who is supposed to have the higghest quality of ingredients,
and the strictest quality control and testing, using the same source of
wheat gluten used by all of those inexpensive supermarket brands?
This is a prescription diet- only sold to veterinarians who are told it is
of the "highest standard and quality".
Yet again, another large pet food company is outsourcing to get the most
inexpensive ingredients..and now more pet's lives are affected.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
P.S. There are reports of cats showing signs of kidney failure from
being fed exclusively m/d..
It is causing a problem.
You won't see me ever feeding or reccomending a Hills product again.
If you know anyone on this product, please contact them immediately.
It's Your Pet- Heal Them At Home!
Best Wishes
Dr Andrew Jones

Here's another recent report: The FDA doesn't find proof of rat poison but did find evidence of a material used to make plastic in the pet foods.

Melamine found in pet foods (http://phoenix.cox.net/cci/newsnational/national?_mode=view&_state=maximized&view=article&id=D8O6MF701&_action=validatearticle)

I know there is a nation wide petfood recall here in canada as well.. Iams wet foods are one product named in the HUGE list of canned/dog cat food... it is causing some serious problems in the kidneys, liver!!... My parents had to return their Iams Gravy, it was a product listed... I cant believe this is happening, it is just nuts!

This is soooo sad. :<

However, I hope something good comes out of all of this... people become aware of the shady practices of so many low quality/big name pet foods and boycott them.

My friend Christine was feeding her dog, Panda, W/D shortly before this. I convinced her to feed Evo instead, and we were just talking about "what if" she had continued feeding W/D. I just found out my friend Avan's adorable GSD mix named Ginger is sick from being fed Iams, and might pass away.
