Has anyone used Hotwire for making hotel reservations? We have a little bundle saved up to go out for our Anniversary and want to get the best deal we can for a nice hotel room. We're going to go to Medieval Times the night before, spend the night in Dallas, then go to the Zoo or something on the day of our anniversary :) :)
Is hotwire legit? Getting a room in a 4-star establishment for $89 seems way too good to be true!!

Getting a room in a 4-star establishment for $89 seems way too good to be true!!

Probably IS too good to be true!

From the Hotwire web site - after *clicking* a 3.5-Star "Deal" for Cleveland, Ohio >>"
What you'll get:

A room in a quality name-brand or trusted independent hotel
A location that works for you
Star ratings you can trust
The lowest price anywhere, guaranteed (javascript: popUp('http://www.hotwire.com/pop-up/double-the-difference-popup.jsp', 'guarantee', 620);)

Why you'll save:

Top hotels use Hotwire to fill their unsold rooms.
By allowing our hotel suppliers to remain anonymous, we negotiate rates significantly lower than what you'll find on other travel sites!
Once you book your room, we immediately confirm your reservation and show you the hotel's complete information, including its name and exact location.
You can't get a refund or change this reservation once your purchase is complete.

Sounds a little "shakey" to me!
You can do a lot for yourself with a telephone and the internet ...

Find the correct 1-800 number for the Home Office of the Hotel/Motel you want to check -
NOTE: There will be DOZENS of "dealers" who trick the search engines into listing
the "dealers" number as if it were the Home Office ... research carefully
to be sure you're calling the REAL home office and not a place like Hotwire!

Then call the Home Office / Reservation number and get a QUOTE on a room at the
location & date you want; make an UNconfirmed reserve on it;
then ask for the Direct Number to that Hotel/Motel front desk.

Now call the front desk and start over- date, type of room, etc - and ask for their BEST price. Now you have two quotes for the same room ...

NOW call a couple of the room resellers - see if any of them can really beat the chain quotes.
Pick your best price, then call all the other offices back and cancel your tentative reservations.
Be sure to get cancellation "confirmations" and write them down.

Happy Trippin!
