My computer gets a system shutdown message that gives me a one minute countdown to log off and close everything every time I open MSN. Is it a virus or what?

Yes, it is a virus, can't remember the name.

Time for a full virus scan.

.. I've been online for like 30 minutes and I already have a virus. :ro+lleyes:
Edit: I think I read about it online.. *goes back to HP site* This computer is ancient, so.. it may have already had it.

It's probably sasser or some derivative of sasser.

If you don't have anti virus software running on your comp it will get infected as soon as you hook into the network if there is a version of sasser (or numerous other) viruses in the wild on that net.

Yeah. I need to download AVG asap. It's the Blaster-Worm (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00035757&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=93197&dlc=en&lang=en) virus, right? At least it tells how to get rid of it.

From an earlier thread I posted in about Viruses ...

Well, heres my 2-cents worth...

Like previously mentioned, any antivirus is only as good as its most recent update, as an antivirus is just that - its to prevent a virus, but not necessairly help to clean it out once an infection has occurred.

Having said that, once a virus is detected in your computer - depending on the virus type (virus, worm, trojan, etc.), theres several ways to tackle the problem. Could you give us a little information>

- What was the full name of the infected file that it found (filename.***)
- What was the full virus name?
- What operating system do you have (windows xp home, windows 2000, etc.)?
- What is the antivirus you currently have on your computer, the software version, and what is the date of the virus definitions (the most recent update?)

This way we could help to point you in the right direction for removal -- and depending on the problem, Symantec (Norton) has a ton of free tools on the website to help remove the problem.

I'd be more than happy to give you a hand to the best of my abilities - i used to work for an antivirus company as tech support for virus removal -- can't guarantee that I can fix it, but i might be able to help

......

Symantec Free Online Scanner (only tells you the infection name, does not clean)
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/...id=ie&venid=sym

Symantec Trialware Page (30 days free)

McAfee Trialware Page (30 days free)

E-Trust Innoculate Trialware Page (30 days free)

E-Trust Free Online Scanner (scans not cleans)

*** Note: Do not install more than one antivirus on your computer at a time - they will conflict with each other based on the way they interact with your operating system ***

Also, since we're touching on virus problems, an entire other class of problems can come up with Spyware, Ad-ware, etc. Try ...

Lavasoft Adaware

Spybot Search and Destroy

Now I can't paste.. o_o?

Whatever..

The link has what's affected; The Virus is the Blaster Worm I think; Windows XP Home; I don't have one since I just readded the internet.. But I'm downloading AVG free 7.5, and I guess it's updated since I just downloaded it. I'm downloading the "patch" that Microsoft has for the Blaster Worm virus, so I'll see if it works.

Heres a link to a list of tools on the Symantec website

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/security_response/removaltools.jsp

and a link specifically to the Blaster worm

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2003-081119-5051-99

If you can, run the link to the Symantec Online Scanner -- it will at least give you a name, then go back to the first link in this post, and hopefully there is a tool that can fix it for you. :)

Okay, so how do you disable system restore?

Nevermind :p.

System REstore: click on Start
Then click on Help and Support.

Somewhere on there, you will see System Restore. It is on the left on my PC.

You have to have a restore point set up already. You should see a calendar which will identify restore points for you. Take a guess as to when the virus came in, and restore to a point before that.

Good luck!

I was just going to system restore the whole thing, because it worked the last time I had a killer virus that was destroying my computer, but I'll just follow what the symantec site says and I'll also run AVG while I'm running it just to make sure I'm getting everything. Thanks for all the help! :)

The symantec thing said the blaster worm was gone, so the patch hopefully fixed it.

You're lucky. That virus fried my computer last year.

Just a few suggestions:

Download AdAware from Lavasoft. The personal edition is free for home use. That will stop some popups and is a decent spyware removal tool when used in conjunction with Spybot search and Destroy.

They are both free programs, but they both update the spyware/adware definitions on a regular basis.

They virus scanner in conjunction with the spyware programs normally keeo systems pretty clean.

Ouch, that stinks. :(

Yeah.. I still have a lot to download, so I'll add that to my to-do list. Thanks! :)

UGH! It's giving me the message again. The Symantec thing said the virus wasn't on the computer!

ETA: Now the whole computer is screwing up. MSN and Yahoo won't work, and it's surprising it even let me onto PT. Would a system restore work? The only problem is I don't know when the virus was here. It might have been here before I even got the computer.

System restore won't do anything.

The Hard drive has to be given a complete scan, and possibly given a low level format to get rid of the virus.

Can you reboot? You're probably going to have to start up in safe mode. I can't remember how to tell you to do that, either. I don't know if you can do a full scan in safe mode, either.
