So, I planned on getting chicks again this year, but not for a while. We know what happend last year. I've made an area AWAY from the dogs so this won't happen again. We live in a different house than we did last year and I have lots more room for them too.

Anywho, I went to the next town this morning for a doctor's appointment. I stopped by my grandparent's new Carhart Supply store for a visit on my way out of town. While I was there my Grandma said I should go look what the new store next door has. I walked over to the new feed store next door. They had baby chicks! :D They were only a day or so old. All looked pretty healthy and happy. I decided I was gonna buy a few, but the store wasn't open yet. They don't open till 4pm. So I'm getting their area ready and waiting for my little brother to get home. He's the other animal nut in the family and he's going to help me pick some out.

I'm not sure what kinds of chickens they were. They had Rhode Island Reds and a couple other kinds.

I'll take pics and post em when we get home!

Here are pics of my chicks and a video too! The lady at the store said she knew there was Rhode Island Reds and then a mixture of a couple other kinds. We don't know what we got. Any ideas?

Everyone in the box they came home in.

They are so cute!!! Adorable!!!

The black and white ones, look like they could be either Barred rocks or Black stars. The whitish one is harder to Identify, could be just about anything, but Buff rock comes to mind.
If you want to see what chick breeds look like, check out www.Mcmurrayhatchery.com (http://www.Mcmurrayhatchery.com) click on the day old chicks, and each breed will have a pic of the baby chicks.

Lute, city slicker question here ... what will you do with the baby chicks when they're ... uhmm ... grown? Will you move them to a hen house? They sure are cute.

the chicks will be moved outdoors to a fenced area with a hen house when they are 5-6 weeks old. IF the weather is nice enough. Unfortinatly, I live too close to neighbors to keep any roosters. since these chicks are straight run i may have to find homes for the ones that turn out to be roosters.

Will you be able to collect eggs from them???

They are VERY cute! I see them at the farm store, in a couple weeks, along with the baby ducks and baby turkeys etc. I always wonder how many are going to end up . . . on a dinner table!

Too bad you live so far away, I can always use more roosters! I love my roosters!

Freedom, yes! In a few months the pullets(hens that havn't laid any eggs yet) will lay big brown eggs. Fortinatly NONE of my chickens will be eaten. I could never eat one of my pets. It would just be wrong. I hate seeing the fryer chicks at feed stores. Poor things are guarenteed to die and probably be eaten. :(

critter crazy, I wish I lived closer to you too! I'd be visiting your big puppies and lovely chickens all the time! :D :p

Chicks are fed a special diet called "Chick Starter feed", found at you local Feed store. Chicks purchased from feed stores, or Hatcheries, as day olds, are hatched in Incubators.
