Hello everyone! I took some pics of all my fish today and wanted to share them. Alot of them are of Queen. But about two weeks ago I also got two female bettas. I hadn't put any posts about them because I wanted to make sure they would live longer than a week or two, which they have. :) Althought I think one may die very soon because of the other one.

This is Ursela (I named her Ursela for a good reason):

http://hosting.showthatimage.com/BFF85D83-DF49-4BC7-B2A1D4966763EC5C.jpg

She is the meanest female betta ever! She is killing my other betta named Ariel:

http://hosting.showthatimage.com/73E312BD-1967-4526-809C812471E92E13.jpg

She constantly picks at Ariel's poor tail and attacks her. I think Poor Ariel might die any day now. I would seperate them but the only other tank I have to put Ariel in is the 10 gallon with Queen's babies, and I don't want her to eat the babies. So I don't really know what to do, I was hoping that after awhile Ursela would stop being mean, but she's worse than ever.

Here's some more pics of Ursela and Ariel.

This is Ariel hiding from Ursela:(

And here's Ursela going after Ariel again, you can see her gills flaring out. I thought female bettas were suppose to be nice to each other. I must have got a really grouchy one. If anyone has any ideas I would be happy to hear them cause I think Ariel is going to be gone very soon:(

And here are some pictures of the big momma Queen! Who by the way thought she wasn't all ready big enough, decides to grow more and more now that she is in a 55 gallon lol.

Queen and her buddies. Unfortunately I am probably going to be putting Sir Knight (All orange one) and Duke (short colorful one) in a goldfish pond this summer or spring. The only way I can keep Queen is to get rid of two or three of them because she is soooo big that the tank can barely stay unfoggy with all of them in there. I love Queen so much that I could never put her in the pond. She's my pride and Joy, so I will probably leave Bob(algae eater) and just one other fish in with Queen so that she can keep growing and the tank can stay clean. I may choose to keep SeaKing with her.

Here is Queen and Duke, he's the one that keeps making her lay eggs...he must like something about her ;)

Queen and Sir Knight. Queen has gone all white too. Remember in the older pictures she had lots of orange on her, now she is pretty much all white.

If you only have 2 females together they will fight just like males.5 or more females in tank with lots of hides and plants.Ariel needs to be moved soon.Put her in anything or Ursela will hurt her or kill her.I belong to a betta fourm and they use plastice bins sometimes for there fry or temps or intil they can get a bigger tank.

I've never had any female bettas but one. You should take U out of the tank and if you don't have another tank available right now then at least put her in a bowl. Bettas don't have to have air bubbles so she will be alright. Or, if you have a net put her in one. She is going to kill little A if you just leave them alone! I'd hate for her to die. :( That's what I'd do though just put her in a bowl or a net until you can get another tank or bowl or something to put her in.

Queen is so big! I wish I had made a picture of my fish I use to have. He was bigger than her. He was a koi and he was humongous! His name was Cheeko and I had him for 3 yrs!

I'd love to see some pictures of those baby goldfish if you've got some and it's not too much trouble!? :D

And here are a couple pictures of Little Guy. Remember when Little Guy accidentally when up my filter and got hurt really bad? Even his tail was sliced to bits and he had some scales shaved off of him..it was awful. Well he's a trooper cause he is all better now!

This is something he does alot, he likes to go in amongst the big full plants and he usually picks food off of them or eats the eggs that are on them from Queen.

http://hosting.showthatimage.com/C11D81D7-FE96-4FC2-B503D22B502DEF22.jpg

Little Guy will be coming to University with me in the fall.

And here's a picture of Queen from September, she turned all white pretty quickly.http://hosting.showthatimage.com/5CC4EB82-2906-4E52-9EA3584152511434.jpg

And last but not least! My sister's present from me! She's been wanting a male betta lately and doesn't have much money, so while I was in town today I got her a very pretty betta and had its tank all set up very nicely.

I took one picture so that my sister could take more later. Here the beautiful guy is:

I hope she likes him! She should be getting home in about an hour or two:D It will be a nice surprise!

Anyways I hope you all liked the pictures!

OKay, I think I might try putting her in the 10 gallon, maybe she won't eat the babies?

I love seeing Queen she really is a Queen. All your goldies are so beautiful but I think Queen is the prettiest.I bet your sister will love her betta. :) Ariel and Ursela are also very pretty.

does your sister have any extra tanks?

Kalei
03-10-2007, 03:07 PM
No she doesn't, she has a cray fish but that would definatley eat the betta. So I just put Ariel in the 10 gallon and she isn't going after the babies at all which is good, but she does look like she is on her way out. She is swimming around just using her bottom little fins but her back fin looks stiff, she won't move it:( I hope she makes it.

Thanks everyone about Queen. She certainly is a big fish. She is a little over a foot long and about 3 or 4 inches wide:)

And thanks about my sister's betta too!:D I think she will like it~!

Hehe, thanks! I got those lovely pictures of Bobo and Kishii this morning:)

Nope, she hasn't got it yet...she and my parents had left on a four hour trip to pick up our cousin this morning and should be home soon I hope...I'm starting to get lonely all by myself in the house lol. But at least I have all the animals to keep me company.:)

Gorgeus fishies! I remeber seeing pictures of Queen when you first joined. She doesn't look like the same fish! Still beautiful either way!

I love your female bettas. What size tank are they in? If Ariel survives and they are in a big enough space you might want to get another female. Always have female bettas in odd numbers. :)

Thanks for sending the baby GF pics! They are cute even though it is hard to see them too well! I hope Ariel gets ok! It's funny how Queen's orange color faded away! I have a fish that was black orange and white, and he lost all his colors and now he's a plain white gold fish too. He's not as big as Queen though!

Kalei

I think some goldfish change their color as they get a certain age, Queen is probably 3 or 4 counting when I didn't have her. But it's okay, white goldfish are very pretty too:D

I know for sure now that Ariel is not going to make it. She's on her last strings. Her gills have been damaged I think, they seem to be bleeding, and their is alot of other red blood marks on her sides too:( I am really sorry that this happened. I had been looking up and asking questions about female bettas for awhile, and sites and people always said female bettas get along, but I never heard that there had to be about 5 or so.

I wish I would've known, then I wouldn't have gotten two. I hope Ariel passes on peacefully. Ursela will have to be an alone betta. I have only a 1 and a half gallon tank so I wouldn't be able to fit more than two in there.

Althought Ursela doesn't seem to care...she loves being alone. I can't believe such little fishies can be so fiesty

I'm sorry to hear that about ariel. I know you didn't mean to let it happen though. I thought all female bettas got along too. I use to have one female betta and I put her in with my male betta thinking they would get along! A few hours later I came back to check in on them and he had bitten her all over! I later found out you shouldn't put a male in with just one girl. She lived and got ok though. Her name was Scarlet. I had her for several years.

:) I am so glad that the little girl lived for you:D That is good news. Bettas definately have a aggression drive.

Female bettas, as you now know, do not always get along. I had two who lived together for years, yet others I had to separate. I wish you would have removed Ariel before it was too late. A bucket, a tupperware container, anything until you could get a bowl or tank to put her in. :(

You can have female bettas in pairs. Some bond real strong. Yet still some females are just killers and don't like to be housed with anybody. I have 6 females right now, but when forming a group I probably went through ten before getting a group that doesn't fight. The store was used to me bringing back the aggressors if they wouldn't stop fighting within a few days. I only had one fight get so bad as to have two girls kill a third before I could get her out of the tank. Next time you try, watch them closely to see that initial fighting isn't leading to any real injury outside of tail and fin shredding.

What kind of filter do you have for your goldfish tank? Even though your bioload is huge, a strong filter and weekly water changes should keep the water parameters at a safe level and prevent clouding.

Kalei
03-11-2007, 11:48 AM
Well she's still alive today everyone. She is certainly a fighter. I still don't think she is going to survive, but you never know, fish can surprise you. I did a treatment on her this morning. I dont' know if anyone has ever heard of this, but to heal a fish sore you can take the fish out of the tank for a few seconds of course and take a Q-tip dipped in Iodine and put the tip of the q-tip on the sore on the fish and then put the fish back in.

I have used that on my goldfish when they got sores in their fins and it heals them up so nicely.:)

Has anyone ever heard of that method before?

Nope! But I'm glad she's still holding on!!!! Definately keep us up dated!

As far as I knew, iodine is highly toxic for fish. Where did you hear of this method?

Kalei
03-11-2007, 06:39 PM
I have known it for many years. And I think its only toxic if it gets near their gills or mouth or eyes, its mainly used for sores on fins and you only dap a tiny bit of iodine on it and then put it back into the water. When my fish get sores on their fins, I do that and they heal right up and my fish are healthy as a horse. But I heard it from some fish people and a pet store owner before.

IRescue452
03-12-2007, 03:34 PM
That's cool. Maybe I'll try it next time I get a fish with anchor worms or fish lice. I can't leave them in the store like that when I see them. Usually it takes a week or two for the sores to heal so I'll have to see what this iodine does. Right now though I'm selling off all but 5 of my current goldfish so I can concentrate on show quality golds and tropicals.

Wow! I bet that tank was really pretty looking. You could fit quite a lot of tropical fish in a 55 gallon:D

And I thought I would inform everyone that Ariel is still hanging in there. It's very sad because I know she is going to die, her gills are red and look like they are bleeding, and a sore on her back is almost eating away at her skin..I can't believe what a fish can do to another fish...poor little girl. I really hope she passes soon, because I hate seeing her in pain.

Ursela loves living in a tank on her own though lol, she must be a mean anti-social fishy.

What did your sister name her betta???
Poor Ariel.
Some females are just aggressive.
I would never put my girl Coral in a tank with other fish.Coral is very aggressive and flares at Liberty. My other girl Tugboat(Rest in Peace)was very easy going and didn't care about seeing my boys.

I don't think I can spell it right, but she named it Dirkts, it's the name of one of her favorite bands lead singer I think. Definately a unique name for a betta. she would have pictures up by now but our family is over from far away so she is quite busy with them...of course I'm just a PT addict so nothing can keep me off the internet for at least 1 hour or 2 a day :D

Have you considered euthanasia for the injured girl? If you don't think she's going to make it, clove oil is a painless death. You buy it at the pharmacy for like $2 and its used as an anesthetic for fish, but an overdose will put them quietly to sleep.

Really? I didn't know that, I have never had to euthanize a fish before, but in her case I really should. Thanks for telling me about the clove oil. I will buy some tomorrow and use it. I will put her in a little seperate tank (its just a small hexagon thing that isn't even a gallon full and do it. How much clove oil should I put in it since its so small? would you recommend a teaspoon? or Tablespoon?

Here's a desent description of clove oil used with alcohol http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm

They use a very little amount of the oil, I use a bit more. When you have a fish that's in as bad a shape as yours, you usually don't need the alcohol, the fish will probably never wake up. Being that its a labyrinth fish is just another assurance that it won't wake up. Sorry if its a bit overwhelming of a subject.

It's okay, I am just happy that I know now how to put her out of her suffering, I feel bad just looking at her,so I'm glad I can do this for her. And thanks muchly for the website, I'll update you later to let you know that she passed on peacefully.

Well after work today I went to the pharmasave and got some Clove Oil, when I got home I put it in the water and after about 5 or 10 minutes Ariel went to sleep and never woke up. I watched to make sure her gills were done moving before I took her away.

Rest in Peace little Ariel.:(
