Farewell, Bear

Your time with us was way too short.

Today my parents’ beloved Great Pyrenees, Bear, went on his journey to Rainbow Bridge. It was sudden. He was only 5.

It all started last week. Bear is a 159lb. huge Great Pyr. He was having difficulty in standing after sitting or lying for a while. Once he got up, he was able to walk. My parents took him in to the vet on Wednesday to see what was wrong and what could be done for him. They took him in to do x-rays of his hips and legs. They used morphine sulfate as a anesthetic (I question this? Is this normal?) Mom and Dad were to pick him up that day at 5:00. When they tried to get him to the car, out of the office, he could not use his back legs. The vet said to leave him till the morning so the anesthetic could wear off. On Thursday morning they picked him up to take him home, but he still couldn’t use his rear legs. The vet said she thought it was Anterior Cruciate Ligament ruptures on both legs, but one more extreme. She gave him Rimadyl and Cosequin to take. They said that he should be able to move around in a day or so. Friday came and they said that the results weren’t in yet and he should be ok shortly. Saturday and Sunday, the same. My parents called for emergency services, but the machine said they were closed till Monday morning. By then Bear was no better. Monday morning, I came over to accompany my Mother to the vet while my Dad stayed with Bear. We told the vet that he needed surgery now because he was in pain by his panting and inability to eat. The vet called and got us an immediate appointment with the orthopedic specialist. Two vet techs came to my parents’ home to help put Bear in the car. It was 90+ and he was stressed. Even though the a/c was blasting and we had ice cubes for him, he panted uncontrollably in the car. He always was a pant-er because of his huge size and intolerance of heat. He had been panting more since the x-ray. I thought we would not make the 30minute ride to the E.R. vet, he was so distressed. They took him in on a gurney. One vet came out to tell us that Bear was in critical condition with a fever of 109. High for dogs is 103. He warned us that he will probably have a heart attack. They gave him IVs and put a fan on him. Then it happened. Cardiac arrest. They tried to revive him for a long time and came to tell us. The vet said he would try till he knew for sure that there was no way Bear was going to come back. Nine doctors and techs worked on him till that moment came. He was not coming back. They brought him to us to view and I’ll never forget that moment for the rest of my life. I kissed him and said good-bye. I will miss you my beautiful one. You were so special. I can’t take this. Sorry.

After reading that tragic story and heartfelt good-bye, I need a tissue and Sue I'm sure you need a boxful! Life just isn't fair sometimes. I'm so, so, sorry for the loss of Beloved Bear! He sounded like a wonderfully furry guy with a heart as big as himself. I'm sure he's smiling down from the bridge, knowing you guys tried your absolute best to take care of him.

{{hugs}} to you dear Sue ~ I'll be praying for comfort for you and your family.

I am so sorry for the loss of sweet Bear. I lost my darling Dilly in a similar way. She went into a convulsion and died at the vets office. It was horrible. I totally know the shock and loss you feel. Take comfort in knowing that you did all you could for the sweet boy and he is no longer in pain. He has lots of animals to run and play with while he waits for you and angels laps to lay his head in when he wants to rest. You are all in my prayers.

Thank you Tonya, Alyssa, and Kimmy,

Yes, they gave me a box of tissues to take with at the ER. He was a bundle of fur! So much to hug!! Huggy-Bear!

Both my furangel Avalanche and my parent's furangel Blizzard (both Great Pyrs) were sure to greet him a Rainbow Bridge. Wolf and Pal (angel GSDs) probably are showing him the ropes, cause they've been there a long time.

Oh, so hard, poor dear Bear! The big babies often leave so soon, but are such a joy that we can't help but love them anyway!

I am sure Bear is rolling around in the snowy area of the Rainbow Bridge, wrassling' with the others who were waiting there for him.

Big Great Pyr-size hugs to you.

I'm sorry to hear about poor sweet Bear. Our furry babies seem to stay with us such a short time, yet they teach us so much about the important aspects of love, life, and joy in the simpliest of ways. I'm sure that despite his short stay on this earth, he was blessed to be a part of you life, as you were to be a part of his. He was a lucky dog to have such a caring family.

Rest in peace sweet Bear. You will be missed.

Please give your parents my heartfelt sympathy and love. Sue, also please accept my sympathy for your loss also. I hope Bear finds Shaianne and all the PetTalk Rainbow Bridge babies and plays with them until we meet them again someday.
Such a tragedy.

Oh, this is so sad. Having lost a dog myself, I know how painful this is for you and your parents now. Please know that Bear has no pain anymore and he is happily playing in the Rainbow Bridge. He is also watching you and your parents, and remembers you with warmth because you loved him so much and provided him a loving home.
Rest In Peace Bear.

Sue, I know how it is to love the dog of a friend or relative as much as we do our own. Bear's loss is so tragic. Such a young boy and to lose him so quickly and not know what to do. It was so hard to even read this account, I can only imagine what it was like for you and your parents to have lived it. I am so, so sorry. These will be some sad days filled with grief. God be with you all.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. You will help me through this. I know he has many friends at Rainbow Bridge (even Mitch, who recently went before him). He is now able to run and play again. Thank you.

Oh, Sue, I am so very sorry to hear that Bear lost his fight at such an early age. It is never easy, but especially not when they should have so many healthy years ahead of them. Please know that you and your family are in my prayers this morning, as is Bear, who I know had the warmest welcome waiting for him in that special place where he will walk freely and not have anymore pain. :(

http://www.plaudersmilies.de/sad/bluecry.gifOh, this is so horribly sad, I can't help sit here and cry because I know that pain too well.
At least be comforted that sweet Bear is at the Rainbow Bridge and so happy to see his buddies, and when the time comes will be waiting for the rest of his family.
Take care, and our thoughts will be of you and your family today.

Sue,
Your parents and you have my sincere heartfelt sympathy on the passing of Bear.

I was just wondering from your post if they believe the anesthesia had something to do with the quickness of this tragedy occuring. What did the specialists think?

God's blessings to Bear and the loved ones he has left behind!

Sue, I am so sorry for your loss of Bear. There is nothing one can say to take the pain away, but know we are all here to listen.
I'm sure you parents are taking it very hard, he was so young.
Yes, you are right he is at the Rainbow Bridge with all of the other beloved pups who went before him including Grandma Kona who is probably taking care of him, licking his ears and eyes.
I'm so sorry, you and your parents have my prayers and heartfelt sympathy.

So sorry about your and your parents'loss Sue. It has been said many times, but thinking about a reunion of all our beloved pets at the other side of the Rainbow, where they are happily playing together, may bring some relief to the pain.

Oh Sue, I am so upset to learn of Bear's passing. He was SUCH a big, beautiful boy. How tragic that such a beloved doggie was lost at such a young age.:( Knowing you, and the devoted furparent that you are, I know also that Bear was a very, very, loved and cherished memeber of the family and will be so missed. I am heartbroken for you and your family, Sue. Many fought valiantly to save him. It must have been God's wish that Bear grace the heavens and the Rainbow Bridge with his gentleness and beauty. Bless you brave, beautiful Bear. I know your family is looking forward to the day you will be together again. Love, Sandra, Star and Cody.
