HOLY COW! I was WONDERING about the artistry - and hoping the dyes/paints didn't hurt the cats!

That butterfly face is brilliant...and some of the others are just plain stunning!

They had a book out in the book store with them and also a calender of them a few years agao. I meant to buy the book but never did. It is amazing what artists can do!

When I first looked at these in my email, I thought the cats were actually painted! I later looked it up on scopes, and turns out they are computer manipulated. It still looks so real to me. :)

The painted cats are in a book called "Why Paint Cats," by the same people who brought us "Why Cats Paint."

I got the e-mail of them from a couple of different people. The e-mails said something along the line that the custom paint jobs cost some $15,000 each and had to be redone every 3 months. I have both of the books, but I didn't see anything about $15,000 paint jobs. I thought the painted cats were done by someone who had a lot of time to spend playing with Photoshop.

In fact, I just got out my copy of the book, and I still can't find the $15,000 explanation. Actually, most of the writing in the book (in both books, in fact) is rather tongue-in-cheek. I still go with the Photoshop explanation.

You can read all about it at http://www.snopes.com/photos/arts/paintedcats.asp.

Hmmm...I'd feel a lot better if I knew for sure that the paintings were computer generated. I don't like the idea of painting cats. I worry that the paint might harm them. And cats are dignified creatures. (Ok, most of the time. LOL) My first reaction was that I wanted to paint that person's house like that and see what s/he thought about that!

Blessings,
Mary

They do look like they're actually painted, but the author of the book admitted his wife spent hours on a paint program manipulating them. Pat added the Snopes link, it explains it all. :)

I think it is a wonderful joke and I am full of admiration for people who can work that finely with Photoshop:D
Of course the cats aren't really painted. Just imagine how much time it would take to paint an elaborate and very detailed pattern just on paper- Catnapper could tell you how much.
And now with a kind of haircolour- it would need long experiments to dye your hair so perfectly and in such predictable colours- and you can be sure that painting white zebra stripes on a black cat could not be reached without long experiments. (Look at what happens when a drak hair person wants to beosme a silver blonde;)) To have this experimental phase you would have to anesthesize the cat- because not even a cat of a more quiet type like our Lady Edwina would stay quiet that long.....
In real - it would be abuse, but as a joke it is a good one :)

These pictures are certainly unique but somehow I'm just not sure about them. It's unique and creative though.

Thats A Lot Of Money To Gild The Lily And Make An Already Beautiful Creature Even More Beautiful If Thats At All Possible.
I Know That The Found Cats Are As Gorgeous As They Are Already With Embellishment.

I'm all for artistic creativity and license but I didn't bother to look at the website. It isn't that important to me. But I agree w/Catmandu. We can't improve upon God's handiwork.

Mary
