I have a Sony CyberShot DSC-P100 and LOVE it! You have to have a steady hand but as long as you arent wiggling all over the place the pictures are quite clear :) I also love that it takes MPEG videos. It isn't too fancy but it has all the different lighting and quality settings.

The best place that I have found for reviews of all the different cameras is:

You're going in the right direction with Canon. They are great cameras. I currently have the PowerShot S2 - love it. But, I would exchange it for the S3 anyday - I like the color of the S3. ;)

However, if you're just getting into photography I wouldn't buy such an expensive camera at first. I'd go with one of the smaller PowerShot series.

I think the best camera depends on what you want it to do. How much control do you want over the settings? Do you want to just aim and shoot away? Do you want to do videos, sound ect? Do you want a compact you can carry anywhere?

I've had three different Olympus cameras. I'd recommend any of them. The Stylus line is a great point and shoot series. Most of the dogsledding, kayaking ect pictures I've posted have been taken with a Stylus 800. I still carry that camera every day. It stays in my purse or my pocket all the time.

I just bought a DSLR and the first time didn't like the Olympus options. I went with a Nikon D-80 and I'm thrilled with it. It takes crisp, sharp pictures, and has remarkable color, but it is bulky, expensive and complicated!

I use www.dpreview.com lots of camera info.

Like Kay said, Canons are great, I've got a Canon Rebel and I love it. But if you're just getting into photography and want something a bit cheaper, how about a Fujifilm?

I've got a Fuji S5500 (kept it as a second camera 'cause the Canon doesnt take videos) and I love it. It's easy to use and takes great pics and good quality videos. The S5500 is a couple of years old now, which means its cheap, and its still a great camera - I'm sure any of the newer models are just as good, if not better.

Hope that helps :)

I have an Olympus Evolt E-500 and am really loving it!! It's a very good quality camera. Gives clear, sharp pictures... and has a lot of setting for any shooting condition. It's a fairly good weight and comfortable to handle. The color is really vibrant. It's a bit pricey... about 600-800 dollars. May be able to find it cheaper, though. Most of the pictures I've posted recently have been with this camera. If your into photography, or even just beginning, this camera might be something worth looking at. I'm just beginning and have learned a lot on this camera so far!

I got mine at Sam's club for 700 dollars, including two lenses.

I have been a big fan of Canon cameras for years, I own 4 of them (Rebel II SLR, Rebel XS SLR, A-40, and the S1).

I've borrowed an S3 and LOVED the macro feature! It's similar to the S1 and was very easy to use, plus had a few features that were cool, like being able to take a B/W pix but be able to have a specific color show through built right into the camera. It has great optical zoom, and ability to snap a still photo DURING a video clip.

The link someone posted above for Steve's Digicams is an excellent one, that's the place I go to research any camera I buy. They are so accurate in their reviews, I found a feature on my S1 on the site that wasn't even listed in my owners manual!

Examples of S3 pix I took when I borrowed the camera in the late summer/early fall. Please forgive the inconsistency of my downsizing. My normal program I use only worked for the first two pix, I had to use a different program for the others and doesn't work as well.
