Hey ya'll fish people! I was wondering if any of you have ever had a little African Dwarf frog as a pet. Our Wal-mart has them and they are really small frogs that can go in tanks with certain fish. I thought they were some cute and am thinking of getting one today:D

I read up about them on the internet and got some information on what size of tank they should live in, what they eat (which is said to be bloodworms and those hard shrimp bits you can get at petstores. And I also read on what fish they can and can't go in with, but I don't plan on having mine in with fish, just a froggy!:)

If you have any information I would definately appreciate it! And if I get one tonight, I will be sure to get some pics of the little guy.

Kalei! Perfect timing, I just took more pictures of my African Dwarf frogs fighting this morning!

I've had them for about 5 years now, and they are just the cutest little guys. The like to have a plant of somewhere else to hide in or under, and mine seem to like a cube of frozen bloodworms for dinner a couple times a week.

Make sure that they're not confused with the Clawed frogs, as those will get big and eat your fish. The African Dwarf frogs only grow to about an inch -- what you see in the store is likely how big they will stay :)

Heres 2 of my guys fighting this morning :)

Awww they are so adorable!:) Do you think if I get a froggy that I should get two just so that the other one has a friend, or are they fine alone too? And if I get two, do you know what size tank two should have?

I have 3 in a 10 gallon tank, with a couple of guppies -- i dont know how they handle being alone since mine have always had friends around. For the size of them though, 2 are probabally not much more trouble than 1 would be :)

Are you planning to put them into an existing tank, or get a new one just for them? :)

Well I actually have a tank available and I set it up two or three days ago, cause I knew I wanted to put something in it and I had been thinking about those frogs for awhile. I bought it so long ago, I think its somewhere between 3 to 4 gallons, I figure that size should be okay for one or two froggys:) I don't plan on having any fish though,I already have my huge Queen who is causing me enough trouble right now lol, but I still love her!

Like already said, make sure you know its a dwarf!

HERE (http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/species/clawedordwarf.html) is a site that tells how to determine if the frog you're really buying is a ADF or an ACF. I've often seen some people mislabel them in petstores, so be careful. =]

I have an African clawed frog, and she's around 3-4". She is so much fun, and loves to take food from my fingers. Its so cute how they eat^^.

Good luck!

Thanks so much everyone for the help! I got my two frogs last night even though Wal-Mart Royally peeved me off. For the first part, the pet store person wasn't even there so I had to have a regular person try and get my frogs.

This person when she put the net in to get me two frogs, she was literally jamming the net on the ground and into the rocks, killing frogs and catfish. She had to at least kill a half a dozen of them. I had my hands up to my mouth I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Then she put the second frog into my bag and the frog was upside down and not moving much. She says "oh I think they play dead sometimes." and put it in the bag thinking the frog was okay and playing dead.

Anyways needless to say I got the two home and the one that was floating upside down was dying, I picked it up and I found that it looks like the net had cut open the poor frogs neck. I was soooo angry. I went back the same night and got a second one because the poor frog died. The second time I was up there I thankfully got the pet store person, although he didn't seem to bright either, he at least was very gentle with the net and got me a healthy one.

Now they are both in my tank and very happy. I haven't seen them eat yet, but hopefully they are. They are so skinny. I don't know if they are naturally that way or if wal-mart hasn't been feeding them properly. I am at work right now, but I will try and get some pictures tonight after work for ya! Thanks for listening to my little rant. Oh and they also never had them labled properly, it didn't say Clawed Frog or Dwarf frog, it just said African Frog, thankfully because of you guys helping me and sites on the internet, I knew they were dwarf frogs.:)

Hey Kalei,

My brother use to have 3 of those kinds and they only lived a few weeks. They were really hard for him to keep alive. I've never had any in my tank, but he just didn't have any luck with them.

I did have an albino frog in my tank. (they're the kind of frog that HAS to be kept in water) and they can get very large.) I had mine for about 4 yrs. He was pretty awesome and lots of fun to watch him grow up!

Go to this web~site and look at the first pic. of the frog on the right. http://allaboutfrogs.org/weird/strange/albino.html
That's like my frog I use to have) If you don't have really small fish I would get one of them! They're really awesome and cute too!

Awww I just can't wait for photos.

Yes Wal-mart is not a very bright store when it comes to fish, last time I had to wait half an hour just for person to take a simple goldfish out of the tank, you won't belive it (Actualy you will lol) they stuck my goldfish in a ziplock bag with barly any air in it so I had to get home as fast as possible.

I wish Wal-mart would stop selling fish, or at least get better people to take care of them and up-grade the tanks, there where 7 silver shraks in a 10 gallon tank and they need a 30 to 50 because they swim so fast. :(

My wal-mart has some frogs too, there so cute & they even have hermit crabs .. in tiny, tiny cups --_--'' but when I go up the the cups those little crabs open there eye's and when I tap the cup they hide again lol.

Wow, yeah I can definately believe that. With my frogs, the girl had no air in the bag at all. When I got out it my car I had to undo the elastic and I blew lots of air in it myself for the drive home.

I can't wait to see them when I get home, I hope they are doing good:)

Well...this is a bummer, I am home and have tried to take pictures, but the frogs won't move around much and just want to be under the rocks. They won't come out. I did get some pics of one of my frogs though, he actually came out of the rocks:)

So do dwarf frogs always like staying in the rocks? Are they messy? And how many bloodworms should I feed them? Do they mind really clean water?

Anyways here are the few pictures I got:)

I think the frogs really like the color rocks though because they are very easy to get under, no digging involved :D

Anyways there are the few pics I got, I'm sorry if they are kind of boring. Maybe once they get more used to the tank, they will move around more.

Awww.. they're so cute! Don't worry, mine were little like that too when i first got them, but i think i overfeed mine since they've got little pot bellies ;)

Mine usually hide under things a lot, so if you have a piece of aquarium wood, or something for them to hide in they might like that as well :)

Your frogs are adorable... Have you thaught about what you're going to name them? My Walmart doesn't carry fish (luckily for the fish!!) and I've found from experience that the best (chain) store for fish is Petsmart... They are usually pretty good with their animals... I know the employees always play with the animals such as dogs, cats, and expecially the birds that no one ever buy because they cost too much...lol

Thanks very much everyone! They definately are cute. I actually haven't named them yet, I have been thinking of some names though. If you have any name ideas, don't hesitate to fire them out:D

I'm not completely sure what their life span is, most people I know that have had them, they lived up to 4 or 5 years and then again I've heard some have lived longer. I just hope mine start gaining some weight soon, they just look too skinny to me lol, I always like a little pudge on my fish or frog to know they are eating healthy.:)

Best chain store for fish is Big Als though ;) ^

Not sur eif any of this has been mentioned yet but...

ADF don't move around much and they are nearly blind so you need to feed them with your hands right in the tanks.
