That makes me SOOOO mad!! The reason these cats are feral is because of irresponsible owners who'd rather dump their so-called problem on someone else than step up the plate and take responsibility.

I do hope the residents come to this poor woman's rescue. If it weren't for her, these poor cats would be out in the cold with no food.

Come on people!! Do your part!!

Great throw Gramma out on the street because you don't like the way shelters look?

How about painting the cat shelters with some ads??You know the kind that say, Politicians need to be funding these programs, instead of 70+ yr old ladies feeding them?

sorry ranting a bit there

I live in a house. And I know that if we don't feed the few cats around here, our trash bags will get holes in them from trying to get to it when we lay it out for trash day. ONe family down the street feeds them as well. And when I found that out I stopped cus she was feeding them. She aslo catches, fixes and releases. She's moving in a year. I will try to take over feeding them.

Thats Such A Sad Story.
I Really Have A Bad Feeling That If The Numbers Of Feral Animals Keeps Increasing That There Are Going To Be Harsher Measures Taken Against These Poor Animals Who Through No Fault Of Thier Own Are Cold And Hungry And Trying To Stay Alive One Day At A Time.
We Are Praying That Those Cats Can Be Helped , But As My Friend From The Animal Welfare Tells Me There Are Always More The Next Day.

While it's sad that there are so many cats that need homes, and there is such an overpopulation problem because too many people fail to spay/neuter.

It's also sad that this lady is losing her home, however lets look at a few things in this article that help shed some light on possibly both sides of the story.

1) "Ginny Foreman and other volunteers who helped Beszterczey and another Monticello resident to get the cats under control two years ago are trying to help."

This is not a first time incident. It apparently has been an ongoing problem for everyone.

2) "She said she's not sure how she'll find something that she can afford on her Social Security income"

And how was the lady affording food for 36+ cats for at least TWO years?

3) Given that there is no comment from the apartment manager, for all we know he has repeatedly dealt with this woman on this issue. For all we know the manager has gotten several complaints from the other tenants or even the city or health department about these cats.

4) Given the horrible incidents of animal hoarding (http://www.tufts.edu/vet/cfa/hoarding/abthoard.htm) it's possible that the manager was concerned that this was going on. Animal hoarding has been seen to have links with dementia (sometimes associated with aging) It's been noted (http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2001/01/07/loc_animal_hoarders.html) that animal hoarders tend to be female, older and solitary, perhaps with compulsive personalities, have intelligence and communication skills (http://www.nyshumane.org/Education/collector.pdf) , combined with a shrewd ability to attract sympathy for themselves, no mater how abused their animals may be.

While I cannot say given information contained in only one article, I do believe every story has two sides.

I could find no other reference or information to this situation on google other than the Free Lance Star article.

1) "Ginny Foreman and other volunteers who helped Beszterczey and another Monticello resident to get the cats under control two years ago are trying to help."

This is not a first time incident. It apparently has been an ongoing problem for everyone. For quite a few years now, even decades, abandoned kitties have lived behind that shopping center.

2) "She said she's not sure how she'll find something that she can afford on her Social Security income"

And how was the lady affording food for 36+ cats for at least TWO years? I've heard that people gave her money for food; I've also heard it's not 36 cats.
3) Given that there is no comment from the apartment manager, for all we know he has repeatedly dealt with this woman on this issue. For all we know the manager has gotten several complaints from the other tenants or even the city or health department about these cats. I'm sure there were complaints, but I don't know about the health dept.
4) Given the horrible incidents of animal hoarding (http://www.tufts.edu/vet/cfa/hoarding/abthoard.htm) it's possible that the manager was concerned that this was going on. But they're not her kitties; they're homeless.
