English Bulldog breeders in MI

So, I'm on a search! A friend of mine wants to get an English Bulldog puppy. He came to tell me today that he found an English Bulldog/French Bulldog MIX in a Pet Store for $2400 that they were planning on getting! :eek: First I informed him about puppymills and then the fact that he's planning on paying that much for a mutt!

He's open to possibilities and said if I could find him a good EB breeder he's willing to go that route instead.

I mentioned the possibility of shelters and he's open to that idea too...except English and French Bulldogs aren't too common..

Sooo...if anybody would like to help me in the search it would be greatly appreciated... :D

We found it very, very difficult to get a rescue English Bulldog. There aren't that many out there and those that are didn't fit into our household because most needed to be "only dogs", or couldn't be trusted with children or cats, or they had major health issues. We were on two lists for several months, but never even got a "bite".

I think $2400, even for a pure bred English Bulldog, is too much, much less for a mixed breed! They are hard to breed and our Mack was from a litter of 8 (one died), and it was artificial insemination and a C-Section that brought him into this world. That means more money to purchase one, but still, $2400 for a mix??? I have no idea what my husband paid for Mack, as he was a "gift" for me, at a time when I was really grieving badly over the loss of one of our Golden Retrievers. But, I know, for sure, it wasn't that much, as the breeder initially sold her puppies for $1800 and my husband told me that he did not pay that much.

They are precious dogs, for sure, but I am certain that your friend can find a breeder that he can trust and not pay that much.

May I suggest widening your search into other states. I have YET not to have to travel to another state for a dog.. Even to pick up Femka at the airport.. lol..

Suggest away :) Haha, I'm not sure if they'd be willing to travel out of state or not but I'm sure they could manage anywhere in Michigan or even Ohio/Indiana. They were willing to travel several hours to get the pup in the pet store!

Okay- let me look into it. I had a 8 hour trip home one way with Zubin- but considering that I would have him for hopefully 15 years, it was worth the drive - And worth knowing what you are getting..

I certainly understand...but I'm not the one getting the dog so I really can't find a breeder outside of the state and expect them to go that route. I think they'd then be more likely to just go to the pet store where they already found what they wanted.

We actually have an english bulldog puppy and an english bulldog/pit bull mix adult in my shelter right now. We were all shocked to see them there. Good luck with the search!

I don't think one can fairly judge a breeder based on a website alone, so here are some of the more concrete questions you can ask the breeder:

- Do you OFA/PennHip the dogs' hips and elbows? If s/he does not OFA *every* breeding dog, move on to the next breeder.

- Do you test the dogs' eyes through CERF and/or OptiGen? Again, every breeding dog should have these tests regularly and keep them updated.

- Have you any history of diseases in the dogs? I can't think of any Bulldog specific diseases off the top of my head, but with a little research you should be able to pinpoint major diseases.

- Do you show or work your dogs? However, remember that the number of champions does not necessarily mean quality. You just want some proof that this breeder isn't breeding *just* for pets.
