I thought this was cool. Garmin, a GPS company, has created an actualy GPS reciever and transmitter for dogs. Currently it looks like it is meant for hunting and game dogs, but hopefully it is on the right track for more hiking based situations. There have been a few scary times when Frankie has gotten out and I'd love to have a smaller version of this to clip onto her collar and know that if she does get out that my chances of finding her are better.

What I would have given for something like this when Delta was missing! If they were even semi-affordable, I'd buy one for every one of my timid dogs! I have several who aren't as shy as Delta, but who would be extremely difficult to catch if they ever escaped!

My dad wonders why if they can microchip a dog, why they can't implant a small GPS transmitter too. I'm sure lost or stolen dogs would be found much quicker.

I was just thinking the same thing. I would pay the big bucks to get Fenway a GPS transmitter chip. He has a regular chip in him. But I'd be all for a GPS transmitter chip.

They do have them, but I have been trying to find the link. The reason is that not all readers can read all chips. It showed up on a thread a few months back also..

ONE Big reason is a GPS Transmitter needs a source of power (battery) to operate.

There ARE a couple of GPS / Tracker / Transmitter COLLAR-mounted units being advertised >>>
