Necco bets on animal attraction
Valentine's Day is going to the dogs this year, according to the New England Confectionery Co., the Revere candy maker better known as Necco.
For more than a century, Necco has celebrated Feb. 14 with Sweethearts Conversation Hearts, an iconic - and edible - tribute to romance, and this year's edition of conversation hearts salutes America's love of animals, including dogs, cats, goldfish, and birds.
The heart-shaped candies have featured such sayings as "Be Mine" or "Kiss Me;" true to this year's animal theme, pet-friendly messages include "Bear Hug," "Love Bird," and "URA Tiger."
Pets are part of 63 percent of US households, Necco notes, and Americans spent $36 billion on pet products and services in 2006.
Necco expects to make 8 billion Sweethearts Conversation Hearts this year, the majority of which will be sold between Jan. 1 and Feb. 14.
