Rocky is a 3yr old Saint Bernard we brought home this morning! His owner is elderly and can no longer give rocky the time, and excersize he needs, so I agreed to give him a home!

Well I just Groomed Rocky!! He loves to be brushed, and just lays right down! I took off his collar, so I could do a good job, and realized there was a choke collar on underneath! So I tried to take it off, and it wont come off!! It is too tight!! I dont know is the guy forgot it was there or what, but it sure as heck didnt got on recently!! I am gonna have to have Hubby Cut it off with his Bolt Cutters!! I am so Glad I noticed it, cause it is starting to get snug. Poor Rocky!! But he is fine, and we will have him fixed up in a Jiffy!

Well if he was a mans dog, and I assume he was by the post of his owner, that could have been a gut reaction of " I thought you were dad.". Let your hubby feed him and give cookies for a few days...

Rocky is gorgeous! I hope things work out with your husband. I'd give things at least a couple weeks, have your hubby give yummy treats or take him for walks. Those two things can help bonding a lot :)

Congratulations - and I knew he'd adjust quickly. Saints are SUCH people dogs. He's just gorgeous, and it's good he's getting along with the other dogs, too. Thank goodness you found that choke collar before it made him miserable! I hope for your sake that he's got leash manners, but he's not too old to learn some. It's just easier with Saints when they are still smaller than the human being trying to train them. They are such sensitive lugs, though - a harsh word is far more wounding than a wack with a 2x4 would be! There just is no *sigh* like a St. Bernard sigh.

Yes we were able to get the Choke Collar off last night. It had to be cut off cause it was way too small to get around his head, i could barely get a finger under it! Rocky was a good boy, and once it was off head started going nuts shaking his head! i think he was happy it was gone!:)

So he seems to be getting along quite nicely! He does seem to have a bit of Sepperation Anxiety tho! Last night we decided to leave the dogs downstairs, as we were unsure of Rocky's House habits.
So Hubby and I went to bed, not more than 20 mins later we heard a big crash, we got up started down the hallway, and there was Rocky! Confused, we went to the hall way door, which was no longer there!! He broke down the door!! Hubby was not happy!! Oops!!
Here is the door!

opps- another door bites the dust.. lol.
As far as muddy paws, when he settles in, trim the hair on the bottom of the paws. That will really reduce how much he brings in from the outside. Also cheap bathroom rugs- the thick pile kind- are excellent to clean big feet. I have then at the entry door they do in and out of..
It may also take a few days before he stops looking for his owner. Saints are known for being very loyal, and it may take a while for him to get over this. Removing also any blankets etc the other owner gave will help. As long as he smells these, he may continue to look for his old owner.

Actually today when i was trimming his nails, i did trim the fur of the bottoms of his feet, ithas helped alot. I remebered that from my Dog groomer, which rocky will be visiting very soon!:)

I love Rocky! I met a big St. like him recently at our local shelter. I wanted so badly to bring him home, but I knew hubby would freak! He was such a good boy, even shook hands with me. I took him out for a walk in the yard there to at least give him a bit of exercise and love. I hope and pray he was adopted, because they are very high kill here! :(

Thank you for giving Rocky a wonderful home! He certainly looks happy and well-accepted by your entire family! :D

Rocky and I Just went for our very first walk together! He was very well behaved! He walks great on the leash, dosent pull or anything! I also got to hear him bark for the first time. My neighbor was driving by in his truck, saw us and pulled over. We chatted about Rocky for a bit, he used to own two Saints, but Both have passed on. As he was pulling away, Rocky starting Barking. It scared the crap out of me, cause i wasnt expecting it! Boy is it loud! :D

Rocky is laying at my feet, Snoring!!!! I thought Duke was loud! Rocky sounds like a darn freight train!!:D

I laughed aloud at your being startled by how big his bark is. Yup, Saints don't bark often - and now you that it's a very good thing they don;t. Takes a lot to be worth actually barking about, but that broad, deep chest gives them a very resonant bark. And the snore - yup! You have an honest-to-goodness Saint Bernard there - that proves it!
