View Full Version : Good place for dog coats?

Hey, can you guys reccomend any places for good-quality dog coats? I'm looking for a really thick one, but can't be fancy at all (my dad would, literally, kill me :p ) I know she's gone without one her whole life up here, but she's getting older, and probably should have a few little luxuries. Like a nice warm winter coat, for these cold canadian winters. :p

It also makes it difficult, because there aren't any places around here where I've seen them. So she can't try them on. She has the rather unusual sight-hound shape. :p

P.S. ( I need a place that will ship to Canada )

Any suggestions?

Try Dr.Foster and Smith, or JB Wholesale or even Petsmart. All are on the web in a search.

You've got sighthounds, you should know... Do the coats at those places tend to fit the chest-n-belly shape?

Wow, those coats all seem to be really small sizes...

Yea Let me look- tell me how thick you want it?//edit//- my guys where a raincoat especially at shows and it was perfect attaching a link and this was JB Wholesale- I use the regular yellow rain coat worn by the pug in a XX large for guys, But the one worn by the boxer is also for a deep chested dog.
I agree- its hard to find coats for these guys!

Well, the winter temp. is about 35, plus very windy off the water.

edited above post. The rain coats are lined with just a light fabric- very light. Just enough to insulate. Usually if they dont get damp they stay warm enough. If I had a grayhound I would use the one worn by the boxer.

I dunno if you could possible get TOO thick. lol, she's got a thin coat, and it is very cold here.

I'm not really looking for a raincoat. I'm looking for a really thick winter one.

Its cold here too but granted my guys have a coat. If its too much bulk in the front it will make the heart too hot. They need insulation on the back. You know your weather better than I do obviously- either would do, however I am concerned that one might be too much. Then again- she is only going out for a few minutes. A dog can overheat in a coat as I know you know already.

I know alot of grayhound people that makes the coats but those are really pricey. Also remember- she doesn have alot of mass to cover either- its just deep.

Good job and it would hold better on the thin neck of a sighthound!! Very good!

GreyhoundGirl

I think that one'll be perfect, it isn't too fancy, and the black won't be too obvious on her. I only hope it will

A) be warm enough

and

B) fit :p

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 08:22 AM
It should fit, they are more expensive, but are custom made, so it will fit the oddball shape

borzoimom
11-24-2006, 08:23 AM
I agree- as I said I know greyhound coats, but they are a little more, but perfect fit is the purpose for getting one... We do have a special body size here and it is hard.. ( I ordered a collar.. lol... )

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 08:25 AM
lol, at least yours are purebred sighthounds, they have a "normal" oddball shape. Mine's a mix. :p Just to complicate things.

They should tell you how to measure it. If you spray the outside of the coat with static spray, it will keep the dog hair off it, and provide a repellent exterior.

"snood" is the neck warmer, right?

borzoimom
11-24-2006, 08:32 AM
Yes it is. In Afghan hounds, its also a just the hood part for them to put around their ears when they eat. Now those are glamorous! lol.. with sequins etc.. lol.

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 08:41 AM
yes, I think I'll get the snood with it. 50 $ for lined with a snood... It'll be an X mas gift... :p

also if you wash it- on cold water on delicate cycle. It will help the stitching alot and the color.

A friend of mine had a coat made for her dog, there custom made. The lady that makes them lives in Canada. Here is the link.

I'm going to get one from Weatherbeeta for my dog. They're originally made for horses and are super durable and thick

GreyhoundGirl

 Hun? If they are made for horses how do they fit dogs?

Tollers-n-Dobes

I got Piper's coats from www.dogedesigns.com. There are nicer out there, but she's located in Canada (Ontario, actually) and her products aren't overly expensive. The lady who wons the site makes them for greyhounds, so maybe she could make a custom fit one for Jenny since she isn't purebred.

The ones from that needlenose link are beautiful though, and look pretty warm. :)

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 05:21 PM
Hmmmmmm, those are much cheaper. :D

Which one do you think would be warmer: the quilted or Berber Coat?

Tollers-n-Dobes
11-24-2006, 05:30 PM
I think the berber would be, but you could always e-mail her and ask. She's very, very helpful. I have the quilted one for Piper and it keeps her pretty warm, but I think the berber would be thicker. :)

Andrea (Needle Nose) makes fabulous coats. Her masterpieces are worn by all the most fashionable hounds on GT ;) If you want a high quality, high fashion coat, I'd definitely recommend her. While you're at it, you should also invest in a four-legged jammie. The temps here never drop below 40-45F so I can't indulge in these luxuries.

However, if you're also looking for a flimsy-ish, one-layer fleece coat, you can't go wrong with Carol:

Here's one of Carol's coats:

Aha ! I see Giselle is doing what she does best. ;)

I've never really understood why people got PJs, I mean, really how cold do they keep their house?

I've heard really good things about needlenose (from Project Racing Home, another greyhound forum ) but for the price, I hope they are good, because they are really rather expensive.

Now, for a question: That home-made one, I assume it was made by you or a family member, do you have the "recipie?" (sorry, couldn't think of the word... )

Edit: And I'll definetly look into Carol, her's seem more with in my allowence :p

Tollers-n-Dobes
11-24-2006, 07:45 PM
As far as the PJ comment goes, some dogs just need PJs. No matter how warm or cold your house is. My house is pretty warm, but Winston get's extremely cold during the night so he had to get a pair...lol. He looks rather funny in them, but they serve a purpose. If a dog get's too cold at night, they can develop kidney infections...well, it's common in Dobermans anyway. Not sure about sighthounds. :)

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 07:52 PM
Ah, I thought it seemed a little odd. But that makes sense :) .

Also a thought, do you think just a snood would keep her warm enough? She is an indoor dog, after all.

Giselle
11-24-2006, 08:06 PM
Greys have unbelievably thin skin and fur. My rule of thumb is - if it's cold enough for me, it's cold enough for the dog. So if I have to pile on an extra blanket at night, Giselle gets an old shirt or coat (hence, the PJs) to sleep in.

Carol's coats are best for dogs in mild temperatures, but most Canadian hounds that I've seen have thicker coats like the ones that Andrea makes. Honestly, I don't think a snood would do much at all because these hounds just have no insulation at all. Sometimes, they really do need a coat! A simple $30 coat can last you many years.

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 08:10 PM
Ah, OK, maybe I'll stick with the coat. I really value your opinion :) . I think Jenny's coat is a bit thicker than most greys, but still rather thin.

You think the PJs would be warm enough for outside, too? Or are they inside-only? They seem to cover most of the body.

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 08:12 PM
I'm really fond of this one, still, but it would be 50$. (needle nose )

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j314/greyhoundgirl_2006/coat.jpg

But yea, It might be simplest to just make my own, (and a LOT cheaper :p )

Giselle
11-24-2006, 08:21 PM
Oh, right, you asked for the DIY coat. Actually, we took Giselle's coat from Carol and tweaked it with buttons (word to the wise, don't use buttons!). It was really an experiment and I don't have a pattern for it. I just traced Gissie's old coat :p

GreyhoundGirl
11-24-2006, 08:24 PM
It doesn't look too complicated, I'll just trace the general shape on a piece of thick fabrick, cut it out and put some velcro on it. :p

Now I'll google search to find a scale life-size shape to trace...

11-25-2006, 06:23 AM
I like the black and pink one too. I would bet you could even find a pattern at a large sewing shop...this isnt it exactly, but its a start.. http://www.thesewingplace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2310

oh Weatherbeeta makes a re-formatted dog line. They use the same materials as their horse models and the horse models are available for dogs.

I made Nino a fleece coat out of the fleece that was on discount at the fabric store. I made it w/o sewing just by tieing parts on. Let me see if I can find the thread about it...

Hi...just read your post looking for a nice winter coat for a Boxer.

I know they are very hard to fit.

We have all kinds of the Whistler Warm Up Coat in stock in size 22 which is typically a great fit for Boxers:

http://www.houndsaroundtown.com/style/whistler-warmup-coat.html

It's snowing sideways here in Nova Scotia and I know we've just been lucky based on what our customers acrosss North America have been saying for the past 6 weeks or so.

Pats to your Pooch,
