Kia soon to sport a new look - disappointing news

When I adopted Kia in 2001, she looked like this..

Then in 2004, she damaged her right ear with excessive scratching and shaking, making her look like this...

I was sad but soon grew to love the one ear up, one ear down look. It gave her character people said.


And so today I came home and while giving her some attention, I noticed the lump in her left ear.

Soon she'll have two floppy ears.

Allergies suck... :mad: :( I miss those perky ears.

I love flop-eared huskies! My soulmate dog, Sleet, is a floppy eared girl. Kia will still be beautiful! I'm sorry that the allergies are still affecting her though. Allergies are not fun--both Sleet and I have them too!

The itchies really hit her hard these past two weeks. I was doing everything I could possibly think of to ease it. She's flopped herself in Daddy's chair looking miserable right now. Poor thing.

I called the vet and we just have to let the ear heal on it's own.

I'll be sure to take photos of her new look once the hematoma dries up.

I understand your disappointment because her ears flop as a result of injury, but there really is a charm to floppy-earred dogs. I love watching their little ears bop up and down when we go for a walk. It is so cute. Kia is still a beautiful little girl.

And you know what's funny... here we all are saying "Oh no... no more one floppy ear Kia" But ya know what... she doesn't care, heck, I'm sure she won't even notice (well... after it heals and the ouchie goes away)

Kim, do they stop during the winter?
Actually that's when it starts up. She's just fine during the summer months, and then come fall she starts to itch and it gets worse as winter progresses (and the air gets drier).

I run a humidifier to try and help ease it.

So it's hard to say if the allergies are more seasonal than food, or a little of both.

Her ear is really engorged with blood/fluid. We gave her more medicine and I wrapped her head up in a bandana and complimented it with a cone. She's not too pleased.

Yeah, her ear is really poofed up thick with blood. It'll probably be fully flopped like the other one within the next day or two. Oh well, it's her own fault and she'll still be cute with the tips of both ears flopping in the breeze as she walks around. Even though her ears are probably hurting, she was still playing fetch and such in the apartment last night, so she's in semi-good spirits I suppose. :)

Benedryl typically. I also have a topical oinment for her ears and if it gets really bad (the times when her belly and armpits are inflamed and bleeding), I'll take her in for a cortizone shot.

She'll be gorgeous no matter what. Poor girl with the allergies though :( Micki gets really itchy in the winter too, a cortizone shot usually helps him a great deal.

Kimmy, my cat Dexter had the same thing. My vet did surgery on it immediately to keep it from rupturing and shriveling up. She actually did a quilting type stitch on it. It still bends over, but isn't all shriveled like it would have been.
