Actually, I saw that movie before, and that's exactly what I thought!!! Disney's The Lion King is pretty much identical to this movie.

I knew about Kimba the White Lion because I had a friend in high school that was named Kimba (his parents named him after the cartoon).

I've admittedly never read the manga or seen the cartoon, so I had no idea how close it paralleled The Lion King, but those screen caps are pretty compelling evidence.
