This little guy was greeting me first thing at my front door this morning! Anyone have any idea what kind of sssssnake this is? I moved him further down my sidewalk into my landscape, and minutes later he was heading towards my front door again. Think he wants to come in and meet the cats? :p

I sent an e-mail to a website about snakes native to Tennessee ... I hope this guy isn't poisonous! ;)

 OMG!!!! Kim, if that greeted me at my front door, I think the whole neighbourhood would have heard my scream.

You are one brave, brave woman to have moved it and to take a picture of it also.

That second picture of it looking straight at you just gives me goosebumps.

From looking at photos, maybe he's a Northern Pine Snake? Looks like a youngster, and if he's one of them, he's harmless! Was it cool in your area last night? He's was probably looking for the warmth emanating from your house!

Found a Tennessee Snakes (http://frogsandsnakes.homestead.com/snakes.html) page that might help you!

Yes, we had one of our coolest nights last night. That is the same website that I e-mailed for an answer! I hope they will get back to me. Hope he doesn't decide to curl up with us in the bed tonight! ;)

Ooooo, I can think of better ways to start my morning!! That sure must have taken you by surprise. Those are some really good pictures of the snake, it should be pretty easy to identify it. Have you heard from the snake website yet? Please watch yourself outside until you know for sure what you're dealing with here. Your kitties staying inside?

Kim that visitor surely would have kept me inside all day! :) I remember once hearing my hubby's cousin remark that she opened her front door to find a copperhead on the porch!  Any thoughts that I might have had of visiting this woman have long since disappeared. :D

That a nice snake.
I suppose if there were snakes here that they could get on the porch through the lattice easily enough.
I wonder how the Cats and snake would interact.
That would be very interesting.

ooh, he's CUTE!! It probably wasn't a good idea to email the website though. My dad just ignores emails like that usually. (He runs herpnet.net)

Aww look at the cute wittle baby face on him!!!:D
I dont know how people can be so afraid of something so much smaller then them. A tiny snake like that , its bite dosent hurt at all and its doubtful that its poisunious.

Why ever would someone that runs a snake site ignore a request asking what kind of snake that was? That is really odd.

I just heard back from the snake expert. He has identified my little visitor as a young Northern Black Racer. I was surprised, as his coloring and markings are not at all what I thought would be a Black Racer. However, upon further investigation of my own, I did find that they are highly patterned and colored as this one is, when they are still young. Also, we did have an adult Black Racer visit our front sidewalk probably a year or more ago! So, it fits! Any way, he / she is not poisonous and will help keep our rodent and insect population under control! ;)

You are pretty brave, I would have screamed my head off! And then after screaming I would've tried to catch it ;) He's cute, and I'm glad you heard back from the 'snake place'. Is he still at your house?

Huh, I must never have seen a young Black Racer - I've only seen black ones, not with his pretty pattern! Yup, that's a good snakey to have in your yard, no danger to you, or the kitties!
