I got a call around 5:00 today from my boss/the foster director of the humane society. Someone had dropped off 9 puppies and she needed foster homes for them. They are between 2-3 weeks old. I'm going to talk with a few breeders to try to determine a closer age estimate. They are Australian Shepherd mixes. I brought home three of them.

Apparently someone found them at a motel in a dumpster. Originally there were 11 puppies but I am not sure what happened to the other two or what happened to the mother. The people that found the puppies only brought us nine of them. They have been without food for a few days so my guess is that the mother was killed/died and the other two puppies died without food and shelter. It is obvious that these puppies were suckling on each other trying to find milk because they all have sores on their paws.

The two fawn ones are very feisty and talkative. The fawn with white was LOUD, so I passed on her. The other fawn one made a lot of noise but it almost reminded me of how Nova "talks", so I took her. I also took the male black tri and the merle. The tris and merle look very much like Aussies, but the fawns look more like Danes or Mastiffs with their color and the black masks. Who knows at this point what they really are.

Here are the five I had to choose from

They are still too young for solid food

These two have been sleeping most of the time

Finally the fawn baby wants to join them

The foster director wants to name them things like Ramada, Hilton, Holiday (Inn) because they were found at a motel. I thought it was a cute idea but hotel names aren't very nice ;) Right now I'm calling the fawn one Diva because it's very clear that she's bossy and will get what she wants. The other two have slept most of the time since I've had them home, so I am waiting to name them.

Everyone please give a big "GOOD GIRL" to Mandy ... she's doing fantastic with them. She's actually being the best behaved around them. She sniffed them and then went and layed down. Nova is sleeping now but was very interested in them for a long time and then growled at Diva when she tried to suckle on her.

The puppies are sleeping right now. I hope I can get some rest tonight :)

I will have them until I see Mandy getting stressed out by them. Then they will go to a new foster home or better yet, get adopted. They won't be hard to get adopted out. I'm sure they will be at the first Petsmart adoption booth that they are old enough for, and I bet they'll all get adopted that day.

Yes, I'll be feeding them raw. Can't imagine myself feeding anything different! I fed raw to my foster kitties last month too, even though they went to a kibble home. The foster director is supportive of raw feeding, thankfully!

I'd imagine that they'll be adopted around 8-9 weeks. I hope I can keep them until they are adopted, but it will all depend on what Mandy wants. She usually does great with puppies, so hopefully they can stay as long as they need to before they are adopted! :)

Sarah, you're an incredible life saver! Bless you, sweetie, you have your hands full, but if anyone can handle it, you can! Good Girl, Mandy! They're all so precious, it should be illegal to be that cute. I loved the photos of being bottle fed. They need bibs!

Wow, they're so precious! =) I love the blue merle baby, he's so fluffy!

It's awesome that you're fostering the babies. I can't imagine how busy you must be! The tri and the merle do look way more Aussie, especially being fluffy. The fawn girl probably does have a different Daddy. Are you going to raise them Raw?

.sarah
09-12-2006, 02:11 AM
Yeah, I was thinking that the fawns had a different dad from the others.

Yep, I'm going to raise them raw! I'm going out in the morning to get some goats milk and ground meats.

I just got done feeding them, and now I'm going to bed. :)

Thanks for taking the time to foster them. They are real cute. I weened my collie litter onto solid food at three weeks. I took holistic puppy chow, raw chicken (with bones) solid gold seameal, vit C and garlic and put it all in a blender and mushed it up. They went for it quicker than you would think. So if you get tired of the bottle the mush food is a alternative.

Sarah, just got done reading your other thread with the pictures so I had to come find out how you ended up with these three cuties!
I can't believe they were in the dumpster, that's so sad. But this sad story sure has a good ending! I know they're going to thrive at your house and I hope Mandy does so well with them that they can stay until they are ready to be adopted.
Give kisses to all three of them and all four of your from me..please:D
