I went out out to feed my horses this morning and when I moved the bale of hay so I could better cut the strings, I was awarded with the sight of a very nervous mother mouse. She was frozen for a second and then she just took off. She must have been nursing or something because she left two VERY tiny babies in her wake. I, of course, went to get my camera. I was worried at first that she wouldn't come back, but by the time I returned, she'd already moved one of them to a safe location. As long as I stood very still, she wasn't bothered by my presence, retrieving her children one-by-one and darting off to put them someplace safe. I snapped a few pictures of the process, a baby, and the nest she'd made. So.... here they are.

And for help on indicating the size of the children I included this picture of my pinki next to a pig from the "Pass the Pigs" game. The babies were about the size of the pig. (love that game :p)

Hopefully mom got them to a safe place where I won't accidently run into them again. There were four babies in all, I believe. She was prety amazing to watch and quite the dedicated mother. I think she's nested in our shed before as I have pictures of another mouse with four babies in a trash can. The babies were older in those pictures, but the mom looks the same. But then... momst mice look the same to me? Ah well, they're safe now and hopefully will remain that way.

Awwww! =D I LOVE mice, especially little eepers like in the first picture.
I'm glad the mum came back for her kids, and that they're all safe and sound.
Thanks for sharing^^.

How cute! It was nice of you not to object to her having her babies in your shed. :)

Unfortunatly, Cathy, my parents weren't nearly as understanding. Upon finding the mother and her babes once more when he was cleaning out the shed, my father swept the babies out the door. I was sure they would all die as the mother had run off and had no clue as to where her children were. This was Friday evening. I was pretty ticked about the whole thing, but there was nothing I could say to stop them from pestering the mom and her babies. Saturday we went to get hay and I was told to sweep the debris from the walk and into the horse pen. I didn't get it all because some of it was tangled a bit in the weeds. Sunday morning I went to do more chores before church and found one of the little tykes on the ground. I was sure it was dead and so I picked it up with the intent to bury the babe properly. Much to my surprise, it moved! So he (at least I'm calling it a he) is alive and well and I've snuck him into the house. My parents weren't too thrilled when they found out today, but they havn't demanded I get rid of him either. I'm doing what little I can to keep him alive.

All of this to say that through some pretty horrible circumstances, I am able to honor zoomer's request for some more pictures. It's just the one out of the four. :( I've named him Ralph (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0064410048?v=glance) (first) Asher (http://www.babynamesworld.com/meaning_of_Asher.html) (middle) Dutcher(last). Thus his initals spell R.A.D. :p :D Ironiclly enough, I made him a bed in an empty old cat food bowl. :p

Curled up in his bed before I decided to line it with downy duck feathers...
