View Full Version : UPDATE!! PUPPIES!! -- The puppies have dropped

wolfsoul

The puppies have dropped lower in Visa's abdomen. She went from being big, to being really small. So it looks like it may be a small litter. Marla has never had a Belgian this small at this point in the pregnancy and she's had litters as small as four, so we're a little bit worried as we need atleast four puppies so one can cover the stud fee. She may just be having small puppies, but it would be odd since she's eating raw and typically raw puppies are alot bigger and develop more quickly (at the very young puppy age). Could also be that she's having them a week later than we'd thought, but since the puppies have dropped, her time is definatly coming up.

As we speak, two foster kittens have just finished tying to nurse from her and are now curled up asleep on her hehe.

Anyways, she has 3-7 days left! She's paying alot of attention to her "downstairs" so I'm going to give her to Marla tomorrow.

about 6-7 years ago I had a female that only if you knew her in advance you could say she was pregnant, very small tummy, and on "the day" she delivered 12 healthy puppies(small but not that small)........and all got to grew up nicely.........so who knows.......

can we see some pics..............awwww.........just a few more days.......

hoping you can reach your next pillarhood on this event :D

ETA: is she already showng milk? if you (gently) squeeze a nipple does it milks? if so you are looking to 7 more days or less.......

if she just dropped a belly it couls be between 7-15 days in my experience, but it depends in the very own dog, when mine drop they take 15 days to deliver..........

Do Belgians have, typically, large litters?

Do Belgians have, typically, large litters?
The average is 6-8 -- Marla has only had one litter outside the 6-8 range in 15 years. It was a litter of 4. Even then the dog was way bigger than Visa is -- since the puppies have dropped she doesn't even look pregnant. Marla even had to feel her yesterday to make sure she hadn't aborted them, she's so thin. I can still feel movement in there though, and the chances of feeling movement with only one puppy probably isn't huge. Small litters in Belgians isn't common at all, it'll be weird if it is a small one.

I bet they sure wish.....(it smells really sweet, not sure about taste though:))

i´ll be waiting for those pics

milk production is a very certain sign, when you see milk, no later than 7 days she should be in labor, as she is already producing it for her soon tobe born pups.........check on that........

oh boy, oh boy!!!! Small doesn't mean a few. I remember in April when Zoe had 5 pups she looked skinny like she was done. My whelping partner went home and then zoe had 7 more pups to my surprise. It was a very long ordeal. She took14 hrs to have all 12.

wolfsoul
08-30-2006, 12:43 AM
Thanks for the replies everyone! :) I've decided she's having 9 puppies. LOL. We always take a vote at work whenever someone has or knows a pregnant female, and I say that she's only small because she is trying to surprise us. And she's having 9. lol. I forgot to take pictures lastnight. I do have that before and after picture in my 11,000 posts thread, but it was before the puppies dropped. :o

She started lactating lastnight. At work today she became frantic and started pacing and finally looking for places to nest. She was not acting herself at all, she even growled at a puppy which is very outside her behaviour. We put her in the corner beside Marla, and she eventually calmed down and started playing with her buddies but threw up. Her temp is still at 100 so nothing should happen tonight. She's at Marla's house now and if anything happens her husband will come and get me.

He is a nice boy, he is Visa's puppies' first cousin (his mother is Karma's littermate), so hopefully the puppies will look like him, as he's a gorgeous boy. I've considered breeding Visa to him one day but as of yet their temperments don't match up as much as I'd like. He'd bring down her drive and intensity and bring up her eagerness to please, but he would also bring up her hardness and aggression, something I wouldn't want to risk with Visa's temperment. Loki is only six months though, he has time to change. His siblings are supposed to be very nice too, but BIG. His sister is already 24.5 inches at 6 months!!

Visa has been denning, in the couch of all places. Should be soon, Marla figures tonight or tomorrow.

09-01-2006, 06:23 PM
Loki is one handsome guy! Is it typical/ok for them to have white in their coats in terms of breed standard? I think it's cute. :-)

wolfsoul
09-01-2006, 06:29 PM
Yup, they are allowed to have some white. :) They can have a small/moderate white patch on the chest, and the toes of the hind feet. Then of course they have frosting on the muzzle once they are adults. White anywhere is is a disqualification, except on the front toes it's just a fault. You don't often find a white patch that big on groens over here, but his father is an import from France and white patches are alot more common in Europe. :)

any news? It's been a few hours, just wondering if anything new has happened!?!

wolfsoul
09-02-2006, 09:26 PM
Visa had one male a half hour ago --- She doesn't seem to be inclined to have more, but you never know. With the rest of Marla's dogs, the puppies have come out bang bang bang, but Visa tends to be different in all of her breeding aspects so far lol. She was the only one to breed late into her heat, the only one to be small during pregnancy, and the only one to actually clean the puppy and cut the cord herself. So she may be the only one to take a long time to whelp. :)

So one boy so far!! I am not going to see her right now, as she's also more agitated than any of Marla's Belgians have been while giving birth, she's quite stressed out, and seeing me would make it worse. So for now I'm just getting phone updates and when she has another puppy or two I'll head over as by then she should know what she's doing and her seeing me won't be so bad.

YAY!

Marla says he has a really long tail lol.

We're thinking the plane ride back caused her to absorb the puppies, since it's not in her breed or her lines to have a singleton puppy, or even a small litter. I won't be putting her on a plane anymore anyways, I'll be doing AIs from now on if I can't meet the male.

A singleton Belgian puppy is such a major issue. Belgians need more socialisation than most breeds, and not being able to play and wrestle with siblings can be a problem. Belgians can be mouthy as it is and they are bred to bite hard, he needs to be taught from a young age what is okay and what is not. I'll need to work ten times harder socialising and taining him.

I'm thinking of naming him "Dancing With Myself" and calling him "Solo" but I'm not sure yet. For now I'll call him Solo. :)

Thanks everyone, I took some pictures of Solo, I just have to upload and resize them. He is a major cutie patootie, I just love him. He' so black and shiny and such a whiner. I don't remember Kelly's puppies being so noisy and active at this age. He's crawling around the kennel like a madman making little "merrr merrr" noises. Singletons really are tough, Visa has a bloody panic attack when you walk away with the puppy and if you take him she will stare at you. When there are more puppies the mom won't even notice. He also gets cleaned SO much, she won't leave him alone for two seconds. Not to mention he's fat LOL. He's average size, 12 ounces at birth which is very normal, but he's already gained an ounce since lastnight. He's adorable.

Jordan does a local shelter have momless pups you could foster that would solve a problem for 2 pups.

I thought the exact same thing! :) The SPCA doesn't have anything but I'm going to ask around and see what I can find.

So I've decided that instead of Dillon I may breed her to Loki first and then Dillon the year after (depending on Loki's temperment -- right now I don't find him suited to Visa). It's just that, if she didn't absorb the puppies, it may be a fertility issue, and I'm not going to spend over $1000 mating her to Dillon when no pups will come out of it. So I may as well try her with Loki, who won't cost me any money, and if she has another small litter we will know it's an issue with her fertility and I won't go ahead with the breeding with Dillon -- it would be heartbreaking to spend over a grand and not get my next puppy out of it. Loki wouldn't be a poor match, his problems thus far are more of an environmental thing if you ask me, but he is an insecure dog and I don't want to mix that with Visa's drive. If he proves himself in the future to be a nice, secure dog (and he's already getting better) I will be comfortable. They sure as heck would be GORGEOUS pups, Loki is stunning, and his temperment is lovely, just mixed with Visa's I'm not sure yet. We'll see.

Pictures coming up.
