Great idea! Maybe posters from different countries could post their national animals etc? :)

I'll do Canada ;)

Canada is funny, I can't seem to find any standard for having a Provincial animal / bird / fish / etc. -- some have them, and some dont?

Now, I'm pretty sure that Canada's animal symbol is the Beaver, and here's some info on the other provinces :)

Alberta
Provincial bird: Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus
Provincial animal: Big Horn Sheep, Ovis canadensis
Provincial fish: Bull trout, Salvelinus confluentus

British Columbia
Provincial animal: Spirit bear, Ursus americanus kermodei
Provincial bird: Steller's Jay, Cyanocitta stelleri

Manitoba
Provincial bird: Great Grey Owl, Strix nebulosa

Newfoundland and Labrador
Provincial bird: Atlantic Puffin, Fratercula arctica
Provincial game bird: Ptarmigan, Lagopus spp.
Provincial Fish: Atlantic Cod Gadus morhua
Provincial animal: Caribou
Provincial dog: Newfoundland dog & Labrador Retriever

New Brunswick
Provincial bird: Black-capped Chickadee, Parus atricapillus

Nova Scotia
Provincial bird: Osprey, Pandion haliaetus
Provincial dog: Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever

Ontario
Provincial bird: Common Loon, Gavia immer

Quebec
Provincial bird: Snowy Owl, Nyctea scandiaca

Prince Edward Island
Provincial bird: Blue Jay, Cyanocitta cristata

Saskatchewan
Provincial bird: Sharp-tailed Grouse, Pedioectes phasianellus jamesi
Provincial mammal: White-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus

Nunavut
Territorial bird: Rock Ptarmigan, (Aqilgiq) Lagopus mutus
Territorial animal: Canadian Inuit Dog (Qinmiq) Canis Familiaris Borealis

Northwest Territories
Territorial bird: Gyr Falcon, Falco rusticolus
Territorial fish: Arctic grayling, Thymallus arcticus

Yukon

I know Massachusett's state bird is the Chickadee, and the state flower is the mayflower, which I only have seen once, we wenting seraching for it in forest that my grandfather owned, it is very low to the ground, so it helps to have an experienced guide!

That is a nice thread, gina's ark,

Michigans State Bird is the "Robin", our State Flower is "The Apple Blossem", and I thought our State Mammal was the Wolverine.

I've never , ever seen a Wolverine, It is related to the Badger and the Skunk, a very mean animal.

Someday, I want to make a quilt of all the States, and, include their State Flower!!! I've got so many projects going on in my messy sewing room right now that I may never get around to it!!!! But, it is a dream, none the less.

our fruit has to be the apple hence the city of cuauhtemoc where the "manzaneros" (team name) are from, here its the top apple producer adn exporter I guess in Latinamerica and in the top of the world (not sure exact numbers)

Yukon
Territorial bird: Common Raven, Corvus corax

Stoopid Ravens! I have Raven issues. Every time I feed my dogs at leat 30 of them show up to try and steal their food. I have two that wake me up every morning at 5 without fail by having a screaming match on my roof. I hate those two birds. Ravens are protected here, despite the fact that there are millions of them! I'm supposed to report it every time my dogs kill one, but I never do. Doesn't happen very often anyway. They may be annoying birds, but they are dang smart!

The Yukon's flower is Fireweed. It's pretty and grows everywhere!

Glacier - I'm not sure if we have too many Ravens this far south, but we certainly have Crows and they're smart little guys too :) If you're interested, heres a National Geographic video of some Rooks (i think they're related) coming down en-masse and eating some peoples' campsite

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/04/0414_060414_devils_video.html

Bri - Raccoons are definately trouble when it comes to garbage (and roof dancing at 2am), but they're cute little guys and they have the most adorable little hands -- they pick up their food and wash it before eating it :)

Bri, some time you have to go to Omaha, Nebraska's Henry Doorly Zoo. It gets my vote for best US zoo. They have a Kingdoms of the Night exhibit and one exhibit within it has about a doesen coons and a dozen young gators and a few snapping turtles and the coons hold there own in there! It really is a revolutionatry exhibit. Quoted from someone else but true, "A Louisiana swamp with racoons boping alligators on the head."

Hey, I will volunteer the white-tailed deer for Minnesota!!! You drive out in the country and you are bound to see at least 2-3 deer at a time! Besides, it's not like there are a lot of those listed as the state mammal! hahaha:D;)
